After installing numerous stuff on my Slackware system, I notice I am running out of hard-drive space. I see that /tmp/SBo has about 1G of staff that I recently installed --- may I safely delete this staff?

I have a dual boot system - vista & fedora.I was cleaning my hard disk drive, using a partition manager for windows.I moved the swap partition without much thinking about the consequences - and now I can't boot into fedora. It gives the following error mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3 No such file or directory.

Questions:
1) How can I learn which packages I've deleted or installed to make the changes back - I mean install deleted packages and delete installed by mistake?
2) Is there an instrument to make a complete system roll-back to some time point?

I am using find to search for .tgz files modified more than 7 days ago and delete them.find /directory/ -iname backup*.tgz -daystart -mtime +7 -exec rm -rf {} My problem is that find will go through the content of tarball as well and list all content. I want to only search main tarball and delete it if older than 7 days.

My computer works well, but when I try to shut it down or take a re-start it hangs.I need to use the power button to shut it completely down. The thing is, or I think it is, it tries to terminate "bluetooth", problem is I dont have BT on this computer. Is this the reason ? It shows " - Terminating bluetooth" on the shut-down screen. And another thing, sometimes the launch-bar dont auto-hide when my computer has been on for while. I need to log out and in before it hides?

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and it hangs as soon as I start to enter my password on the login screen. The way I am currently booting up is using failsafeX which is leading to no sound on my laptop.
I tried deleting .gconf/.gconfd/.gnome2_private/.gnome2 folders and it didn't help
This is the output to the lshw command: [URL]
I put this up since I have no sound on my system in ubuntu ( no effects mode ) and now even on Windows there is no sound (strange)
I also tried deleting the /config/autostart/* files and it didn't help.

Using a multitude of different programs, including the one the official site recommended, it always hangs at this screen with a blinking cursor:
Code:
SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 EDD Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
how do I get past this? What's going wrong here? I checked the md5sum of the iso and it matches up with the official one.
Edit: I know the flash drive isn't at fault, because I've used it as a live USB for 10.04 and several other distros.

I don't know what I did, but for some reason my fedora system hangs on the OS startup when I use my default kernel. I can still use my other kernel to startup the system though, so it's more of an inconvenience really, but any help fixing it would be appreciated.
The default kernel is Fedora (2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686) when I start up using this kernel the system hangs(I think I using the right term here, but not sure) after these messages code...

I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.

I've recently upgraded to Natty (11.04).The problem that is now occurring, and reoccurring, is like this:- Computer boots, but hangs on a purple screen (nothing on it). Nothing happens, after 15 minutes or so I give up waiting and hard reset.- Boot via Grub (holding shift) into recovery-mode: works fine, but I want the GUI, so I reboot.- After reboot the system hangs again, as mentioned before.- Hard reset again, and booting a previous kernel (2.6.32.8 ): works fine!- Restart again, boots in most recent kernel (2.6.38.10): works fine now.- Try to shutdown/restart again, problem re-occurs every time. So I use the workaround with the extra startup with the older kernel again.and finally typing this.

I've been using rubyripper quite happily on Karmic, now I've moved to Lucid and discovered a bit of an issue. rubyripper will pause for several minutes between tracks with ruby 1.8. If I upgrade to ruby 1.9.1 the gui client won't run due to an issue with libgtk2-ruby not being available for 1.9.1.
The cli version of rubyripper under 1.9.1 is blazingly fast, so that is what I'm using at the moment, but I do prefer the gui.
Anyone have any insight into this? Googling suggests there may be a bug in ruby 1.8.7 that caused the long pauses, but it was supposed to have been fixed in 1.8.7.249 i.e. the default Lucid version.

Im having a bit of an issue installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a Dell Power Edge 1850. I am running RAID1 via the onboard PERC4 controller that is set to emulate MASS storage. I am able to boot from the disk and run through the initial setup, however, when I give it the go ahead to start the partitioning it hangs up on 33%. It does this on both the Guided full disk and guided full disk LVM. I have run a check on the disk as well as memory.

Last time I installed the ATI graphics driver on my PC, it was'nt working fine so I uninstalled that driver. I restarted the PC after uninstalling the driver but then, when PC boots and start running the services the screen just hangs and I don't get into the desktop.
I tried to run the xfs service using service xfs restart and also gdm service using service gdm restart, but in both the cases it shows that Unrecognized Service. So, I think it means that the package for xfs and gdm service is not available in my PC. Is that so?
I tried to get into the desktop by running startx but it gave the following error :-
Fatal Server Error: no screen found
consult the fedora project support at [URL] for help.
check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
giving up
xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error.

(usually called gtk2-devel for rpm based distros or libgtk2.0-dev for deb based distros or similar) If ls -l /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc reports that the file does not exist, then you are missing the development package. how can i remedy it? i am using fedora 7 on and my system is Intel core2 duo.

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I need the ability to search for file content in documents and spreadsheets and I need to be able to do this from the folder level. When I hover my mouse over the "search" button in the file browser toolbar, it says that it can "locate documents and folders on this computer by name or content," but that is not the case. It can only locate documents and folders by name. Is there something I need to download that will allow me to do this? I have nautilus file manager.

I have this weird issue: from time to time (I really cant be more specific, never managed to see a pattern when the problem occurs) the content of open windows is not refreshed until the window is restored and then maximized again. In most cases it is the browser (firefox beta 9), but it is not application specific, because it happens with different applications. I am using the ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6.35-24-generic-pae), compiz(0.8.6) with Nvidia drivers (260.19.06) and X (xorg-server 2:1.9.0-0ubuntu7.1).
