I am attempting to copy files to a 1GB SD card using my built-in SD card reader on my notebook computer. This function worked great on Hardy Heron. However, I switched to Karmic Koala about a week ago. Upon insertion of the SD card, the entire desktop (including mouse cursor) will freeze for about 30 seconds. Then, the SD card apparently mounts with an icon showing on the desktop. I can then open Nautilus and view the files and folders on the card. When I attempt to copy a file over to the SD card, the transaction looks as though it completes because the file icon shows up. However, Nautilus suddenly unmounts the card. When I check the file, I find that only half or less has copied over the the SD card.

The problem is I need the php program to send member email confirmation which contains a confirm link. Run every min may still make the member wait. So I like to make it to run every 20 or 30 secs.
I don't want to put the code to send email on my sign up page as that's no good.
But I don't want to put a sleep 30 sec on my php script and going on loop. If it failed in the middle then it may wait abit to start.
What can be done to achieve my goal and what's the best way?
Making a php script to run as a daemon process? Is that possible and okay?

I have followed this guide [URL] to setup a diskless cluster based on ubuntu server. Every thing is fine in the boot process except this:
After the client boots vmlinuz and init.rd, I see some information and after a minute I see:
Code:
IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up
/init: .: line 3: can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
It is strange since it gets an ip address when it want to boot. I don't know what is wrong with it.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 running Ubuntu 10.04. I use voip to call international mobile numbers. I'm currently using a Netgear router (at a friend's place) and now, my calls cut in 25 seconds. The call time keeps running, but neither can hear each other after 25 seconds. I've tried using service providers like Actionvoip and Jumblo (as they are cheaper than Skype) and clients like Ekiga and Twinkle. Same It happens on both Wi-Fi and ethernet. There is enough credit I tried using my friends Dell Latitude running Windows 7 with my Jumblo account. Surprisingly, it worked perfect!Previously I used a D-Link router and it worked flawlessly with my system.I fail to understand if it is some settings issue or a bug with Netgear's firmware. If anyone else has come across this issue and has been successful in getting around it

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside my Windows 7 os in a dual boot config. I used an installation disk and allowed the ubuntu installer to do all the resizing of partitions, installing of grub, etc. The install is working great and I haven't needed to boot my windows os since which is great. The only complaint I have is that it takes it takes a bit longer to boot than windows did for some reason. The culprit is a blinking cursor that comes up and remains for about 12-15 seconds before the grub menu appears. I already altered the boot option for the grub menu so that ubuntu is default and the option to select another os only appears for 3 seconds but I don't think this is related since the delay occurs before those options appear. I'm not really sure what is causing the delay. Is it looking for the loader? If so, is there a way to edit the configuration so doesn't have to search? As I mentioned, the install is running great otherwise.

I accidentally set the grub startup manager's time to 0 secs and windows xp as the default OS. (I have windows xp and ubuntu on this laptop.)
Now when I turn on or restart my computer, it boots up straight to windows, I can no longer access the grub boot selection screen or my ubuntu OS.

I am using an external USB keyboard to my laptop. Suddenly (after using this keyboard for 6 months), some randomly times I need to press the button 6-7 times before something appears on screen. This happens randomly, I may be able to type a whole paragraph without problem, and suddenly I can't type anymore for few seconds. My system is opensuse 11.3 and it happened last friday 9/10 ( if it is related to any update). I tested the keyboard to another pc and it is working. I tested another keyboard to my laptop and I still have the same problem.

I tried connecting my Debian laptop to a vintage Apple //e using a Super Serial Card on the Apple side and a USB to serial adapter on the laptop side. It kind of works -- I can send data over to the Apple using e.g. echo "foobar" > /dev/ttyUSB0 or via minicom --, but every 20 seconds (quite exactly!) some 4 random characters appear on the Apple's screen (mostly tildes, sometimes a pipe). This does *not* happen when booting the laptop into Debian rescue mode; so I guess it must be some (daemon?) process messing around with the usb serial device in regular intervals.
I tried to disable quite some services, but the problem remains.I don't have any clue how I might catch the evil-doer in the act -- virtually all serial monitors I've so far read about allow only monitoring the interaction of a known program/process with a serial port. But in this case I first have to actually find out which process is talking to the serial port in the first place.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

For a given user on a given networked system, starting KDE (slackware 13.1 stock) hangs during the startup. CNTL+ALT+Fx gets out, and KDE / X can be shutdown with a CNTL+C, however, afterwards doing a df hangs bash.My guess is that there is something IO oriented, as top shows a load of 9+.
There is 5% iowait according to iostat.

I was so pleased with Ubuntu (9.10) on my desktop that I installed it on my laptop, too. However, on the laptop (but not on the desktop) I cannot shut down properly. I get a black screen with the following text:
Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: (flashing cursor)
On one occasion I got:
Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: init: usplash main process (10187) killed by TERM signal
In either case it hangs there and does not completely shut down.

I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Dimension 4100, Pentium III 800 Mhz with 512MB of memory. This was a clean install on a brand new hard drive with Ubuntu as the only OS using the entire disk. Using the desktop CD the install will go smoothly then hang at 95%. I also tried the alternate install with no luck. The system boots to Grub Rescue prompt and I am unable to do anything from there as the commands seem to be very limited, most are unrecognized.
I can run the live CD without problem , and I have included the results from the boot info script below.

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 LTS. Now when booting it hangs and drops me to a initramfs shell. This is a scsi machine with 3 drives. The error I get before dropping to the shell is that the drive with the uuid in menu.lst does not exist. If I type "exit" at initramfs, it finishes booting in a couple of seconds. The uuid is correct and maybe this is a timeout error of some kind. This is a machine that I would want to reboot without having to walk over and type "exit" at the initramfs prompt.

I installed Maverick Meerkat today, and it was working great on the first boot (which is when I updated the system...). However, since then, it won't boot up. When I looked at the output during boot, I noticed that it hangs when it gets to:
Code:
floppy0: no floppy controllers found
After that, the hard drive access light on my laptop turns off and it just sits there.

Just built a new PC with the following hardware and am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10. However it hangs on syscall_call both on Live CD and on Alternative CD.
If I try Fedorda 14 CD it hangs on: "kernel_thread_helper".
If I try DamnSmallLinux I get: "kernel panic vfs unable to mount root fs"
Here is the hardware I used:
Quote:
ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AMD 760G Socket AM3 DVI VGA Out 8 CHannel Audio MATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X3 445 3.1 GHz - Socket AM3 1.5 MB cache
Sapphire HD 5450 1GB DDR3 HDMI DVI VGA Out PCI-E Low Profile Graphics Card
Arctic Power 500W PSU With PCI-E 2x SATA, 20+4 ATX12V 8pin +12V Connectors
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 Socket 775, 1156, 1366, AM2, AM3 Heatpipe CPU Cooler
4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz Memory Kit 1.5V CL9
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache
Samsung SH-B083L 8x BD-ROM with DVDRW DL SATA Blu-Ray Drive
I have tried taking out the Graphics Card and running from the onboard graphics incase there was a conflict but that generated same issue.
I ran memtest86 and the RAM comes up fine with no errors.
I wonder if its anything to do with the HDD being SATA? But then does a LiveCD even care about the HDD?

I've just had the power cut out while downloading a bunch of updates for Ubuntu 10.4
I haven't updated to the latest release because I'm lazy and have slow internet.
Anyway, once power had been restored, I turned my desktop on to find that my install will not actually load. It boots up and goes to the purple 'Ubuntu' screen with the orange dots, and just sits there (for about 15 minutes so far) without any activity on-screen.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 as I said above, and I'd really like to get a solution that does not include 'start from a fresh installation', since I've had to really wrestle with this install to get my wireless adaptor (USB) and wacom tablet working properly.

I've had my system about a month -- 10.10, i7, 8GB RamLast week, I installed KDE and xFce desktop environments. Two things I wonder if you can comment on:1) It boots up into kubuntu instead of Ubuntu, and presents the kubuntu login screen, even when I last used the Gnome environment. This is the curiosity. When I log in, the screen brightens and then plays the Ubuntu default sound, and drops me into the Gnome desktop.2) This is the issue -- every so often , maybe every 5 or 6 logins, after I have logged in, the screen up as normal, but just sits there, empty. I have to Ctrl+[F2] to log into the text interface and issue init 6 to reboot. On the second attempt, it takes me into the Gnome desktop as at other times.

What I find particularly strange is there has been no update recently related to the U1 client. I am guessing this may be a server issue, but it seems that only a few of us are affected currently Until this is resolved, I can no longer use ubuntu one. Pretty much a show-stopper as I rely on it regularly.

This issue happens on both my Dell D630 and my homebuilt desktop, so I'm pretty sure that its not a hardware issue. Both installs are clean new installs with encrypted home directories. Computers go to sleep just fine but when I wake them, karmic is unresponsive and stuck in IO wait for the majority of the time. How can I gather enough information to submit a useful bug report?

Ubuntu server hangs when I boot with a wired Ethernet connection. The last thing I see in the console is code...
I have no problem when I boot to a Wifi connection even when Samba and openssh-server are installed. I see the same sequence of lines in the console as I reported initially (including Reloading, Restarting), but then the output continues with
* Starting the Winbind daemon winbind
Both the wired and wireless connections use dhcp. Obviously, I installed the OS using a wired connection, so it worked reliably once. I'm stuck.
P.S. I tried dhclient -r before rebooting. The machine did not shut down correctly and when I forced a reboot it appeared to hang at the usual place. However, after a long delay it proceeded to boot. Perhaps I am observing a delay due to a very long timeout. I will try another reboot now and check again in the morning.

I've recently installed Ubuntu to my USB stick (Installed from CD so not Live Persistent). But it hangs every few seconds, I think this is because of the low read/write speed of the usb stick. However when using the Live version booting/shutting down takes a long while, I basically need it to be able to boot fast, run fast, and shutdown fast.
