Ubuntu :: Machine Started Back Up - Frozen On Splash Screen

Oct 3, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS onto a blank hard drive with the prospective goal of running WoW on it. I installed Wine and all my security updates and restarted; everything worked fine, but I noticed that the system was suggesting that I get some "proprietary" drivers for my HD Radeon 4550 card. I proceeded to install them and was told that the the OS needed to restart to make the changes. I clicked the close button, restarted from the menu in the top-right hand corner, and when my machine started back up -bam!- frozen on the ubuntu splash screen.

I'm reinstalling now (after trying everything I could think of) and I just want to know how the hell this happened, and how I can avoid it in the future. I'm trying to make the switch from Linux to Windows, but this isn't making it any easier. Also: is there any way I can set up ubuntu to look and interface like a windows clone.

Ubuntu Servers :: Back Up Tools And Set Up A Special Samba Share

Aug 9, 2010

I am a php devloper and recently my company purchased an IBM X3400 M2 Server and i was told to set up the server.I installed the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server i386 version. Everything went up smoothly and i have some queries to be asked.

1.)Our scenario is like this,--> we have an a production LAMP Server and we need the to backup all the contents of www folder and all Mysql files.I plan to do this with a shell script and use the rsync for syncing and backup.

Again i have a mysql backup shell script that i want to activate on system shut down Like when i shut down my server, the backup script should run taking all the backups, just before the Shutdown. The script should run take the backups, one, on the server itself and other on a remote machine sync with rsync and system should then go for Final shut down. How can we achieve this.I know of cron jobs but i prefer the above way.Suggestion requested here.

2.)To Set up a Special Samba share. I need to set up a samba share that will allow only files to be copied and not be deleted. For eg i will create a folder "WEBSITE-BACKUPS"(will contain the list of all finished website works plus mysql dump)

The user on the network will have only permission to paste into this folder.Like a user just paste his work say 'abcwebsite',he will have only this privilege and no DELETE privilege or right. Can this be done?

3.)I have a LAN, in this the IBM Machine is acting as Production LAMP server with around 20 machines connecting and working with files on this server. All other machines are Windows. Can i get a log based on the ip like who has accessed with files at what times or last modification time from an IP address. I usually get complaints from my fellow developers that somebody has deleted or modified their work which is in this IBM Server. So is there any way to monitor this.I also know about subversion, the versioning system but most people here are uncomfortable with check in / check out commands.

CentOS 5 :: Setup APC Back-UPS ES 350 On KDE Server Machine?

Jun 3, 2011

installing my APC Back-UPS ES 350. I am using CentOS 5 KDE setup as a DNS Resolving Caching Name Server, I wanted increase speeds and privacy since I got a letter and didn't like that not one bit, a tv show but whatever. It is very secure now, using peerblock with Iblock List subscribed to for the one year and it is so secure that I have to disable peerblock if I want to use online banking and what not.

setup the APC unit, haven't experienced APC and CentOS is new to me, I didn't want to buy a windows server, so I used BIND instead and well I love CentOS, can't wait to really understand it a lot better, also logging into root is so nice and easy vs Ubuntu, very cool.

I also do not have a DD-WRT supported router nor a Docsis 3 modem, docsis 2, I believe this should give me a lot more speed. currently I just get 11-17Mbps, I am hoping this will bump me back up to 35-37Mbps which I get off and on but unstable.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba PDC - Cannot Add Machine Accounts

May 4, 2010

I am unable to join a W2K or XP machine to a Samba PDC. I have tried to make this work on both 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS without success. Everything else works but I cannot add machine accounts "on the fly" using the "add machine script" as provided in the server guide. I have been able to make it work by enabling the root user but not as a user with admin privileges and sudo in the script. Despite multiple attempts including a new 10.04 install and following the instructions (in the 9.10 server guide) to the letter. Does anyone out there have a samba PDC actually running on Ubuntu and able to add machines on the fly without enabling the root account (i.e using SUDO in the script and a user from the admin group)?

Ubuntu Servers :: SAMBA Is Slow On Newer Machine?

Feb 26, 2011

It takes 45min to transfer 10MB from my laptop to my replacement server. It takes 1minute to transfer the same 10MB from my laptop to the old server.

All connections are equal. Both servers are plugged to the same router.

Details: I have decided to migrate away from my Proliant 1600 to a slightly newer less complex piece of hardware.

Both machines are LAMP installs. Both are setup to be maintained headless 99% of the time and gnome is launched from the command line only when it is needed.

The older machine has more things running on it than the replacement. The replacement has nothing running that the older machine does not have.

Old box runs Ubuntu 6.06 but was fully updated a month ago. Replacement box runs Ubuntu 10.10 and was fully updated just last night.

smb.conf was the same on both boxes other than the share locations. Reading trying to fix it myself, I did put some known speedup lines into the new box's smb.conf, but it did not make a noticeable difference.

Hardware:
Old box,
Proliant 1600 = 1998 small server tech. (weighs 50lbs w/o drives)
single 500mhz xeon (upgradable to 2 600mhz, though they are hard to find reasonably priced)
1GB SDRAM with ECC

[Code].....

It does not matter what share/drive/partition I transfer to on either machine. The result is always the same.

On the newer computer CPU usage rarely goes over 50% and it has not had to go into swap at all yet.

Ubuntu Networking :: File Server On 10.04 Machine - Slow Samba

May 22, 2010

I'm trying to set up a fileserver on my 10.04 machine, and access the files from Windows 7 via wifi. I can see everything alright, but the transfer speed to Windows never gets higher than 70KBps. Both computers can access the web at 800+KBps. I've also checked with an OS X machine on the same network, which was also extremely slow, so I'm fairly sure that the problem is on the server's side.

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN Client And Samba/SSH Server On One Physical Machine?

Jun 3, 2010

I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.

To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.

Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)

Everything is working as it should.

Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Network Overview with VPN active

Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.

Configuration Overview

tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.

Slackware :: Samba 3.5 With New Hardware And Machine Trust Account

Jun 25, 2010

I need some expert advice here regarding the samba problem after upgrading. All data migrated with the appropriate permission. I transferred the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/samba/* files to the new server.

Previous working version (Slackware v11 - 32bits - Old Hardware)
- samba-3.0.25a-i486-1_slack11.0
- XP Pro users are able to login and authenticate (NT DOMAIN)
- Login script and file sharing with permission are okay too

Upgraded to (Slackware 13.1 64bits - New hardware)
- samba-3.5.2-x86_64-1
- if the PC did not logoff, the file sharing and permission works fine.
- If they logoff, they will not able to re-logon.
- If I detach the PC from domain and then rejoin domain, I will be able to login to the domain, So I guess the samba configuration is working

I read it has to do with Machine Trust Account or something.
- Can I convert or make samba 3.5 recognize the Machine Trust Account on the new hardware?
- How can I check if the if the entry is successfully registered as machine trust account?
I checked and found the 'machinename$' (example) in all three places /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow and /etc/samba/private/passdb.tdb. I see no differences on the one PC that I unjoin and rejoin the domain versus those old domain name join to the old hardware.
