Server :: Samba Openldap Not Authenticating To Windows Xp Machine?
Jul 25, 2010
I am trying to setup my opensue 11.3 server as a pdc using openldap and samba
I am continuously getting a network path not found error message on my windows xp box. I already verified that the network settings are good.
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the

I have everything networked properly, as far as I can tell, both computers see each other... I can use putty to port in and use my Linux machine (Debian 4). When I go to map network drive on my XP machine, I can see the computer, but not the shared folder. After some googling I found that i have to create my Windows user name ont he Linux machine as a user as well. Unforunately, that user is 'Administrator'. So I told Linux to force user, and it created it, and did smbpasswd command and added the user to the samba list. Still nothing.

I am trying to set up samba in my CentOS virtual machine that is running on a Windows 7 host. I have found a tutorial in the How-Tos on this site but I'm not sure if they are exact and I'm paranoid about messing something up. The link to the tutorial is below. Is there anything that I should do different or anything that I should be aware of? Also, once this is set up, how do I transfer files between the two machines?

I have OpenLDAP 2.4.12 and Samba 3.5.1 installed. When I try to change the password with smbpasswd, it changes the Windows password fine. But userPassword is not updated in LDAP. The error message is: "smbldap_check_root_dse: Expected one rootDSE, got 0" when I run smbpasswd -D 10 <username>.
I added the following to slapd.conf:
access to dn.base=""
by * read
password-hash {md5}
in hopes of allowing samba to read the root DSE, even though Samba is configured with the root DN.
how to make samba find what it needs in the root DSE of my LDAP server?

I have LDAP server, it is configured and all is very well, I use it to make some authentication for our Servers and routers. Also I integrates LDAP with Radius and all is work, so LDAP is powerful to the company. Last week my manager ask me to try making these authentication for all of Company computers which is windows. So, can I use LDAP, or Active Directory? I wish to use LDAP.

Trying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.
I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.
When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.

I have two ubuntu 10.04 64-bit servers running samba (3.4.7) and openLDAP (2.4.21). The LDAP directory is successfully replicating between the two servers. These servers also serve as LDAP servers for sudo, pam, nss, and other services for a dozen servers without issues. The BDC samba is configured to use itself for LDAP. I connected to the BDC using the samba ldap credentials and verified I could a) see the Computer object b) read NTPassword and LMPassword. The workstations can authenticate to the domain successfully against the PDC. If a workstation boots and connects to the BDC, they login fails with:
Code:
[2010/07/18 11:46:23, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:336(get_md4pw)
get_md4pw: Workstation MACHINENAME$: no account in domain
[2010/07/18 11:46:23, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:584(_netr_ServerAuthenticate3)
_netr_ServerAuthenticate3: failed to get machine password for account MACHINENAME$: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Successful authentication against the PDC shows:
Code:
[2010/07/18 11:59:20, 1] smbd/service.c:1063(make_connection_snum)
MACHINENAME (192.168.2.145) connect to service netlogon initially as user username (uid=30000, gid=512) (pid 1727)

I am looking for ideas for getting windows users into an ldap server. I am currently running a Linux server for my department and need to create an LDAP server which mirrors the username/password information for all of us as they are stored in the windows server here. I have the openldap server up and running on Ubuntu 8.04 and it works great; I now need to find some way to import user info into this from windows. I've seen discussions of using ldifde.exe to export the AD users into an ldif file. Is this the simplest way to go about it?
Our Linux server is currently providing us with much needed services using apache, and apache is authenticating using LDAP to our windows server (Using our windows username / password is required functionality). This windows server has some problem which causes it to delay for inordinate amounts of time between authentication requests and responses. The situation is such that this problem will not be addressed by IT staff. However, I have control over the Linux server so I am looking to just mirror the windows server on an LDAP server of my own. I could get away with updating the passwords in the Linux server.

This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N
This will not show me the windows os this only show me my laptop. What can i change for this to show me the other computer on this network. The port i am wanting is open. I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

I need to access a Windows Server 2000 machine using a Linux machine via KDE, but that will migrate to Gnome. The Linux user to connect to Windows machine, you should open an application 'XYZ' automatically, and only this, denying any unauthorized access. When you close the application 'XYZ' communications (RDP?) Should be terminated. Do I need a log of accesses and possible attempts to circumvent the system and access other application.

I recently replaced my windows fileserver with one running Ubuntu. One thing I've noticed (which is a annoying) is that when I copy files between two samba shares from my windows machine, it copies the file through my PC to the new destination. On windows shares it just did some sort of local copy (ie it took about 2 seconds) rather than 3-4 minutes. Is this the normal behaviour, is there any way around it on Linux

A time ago I've been trying to implement a PDC linux server with Samba and Openldap for centralized authentication for windows and linux clients, but I can NOT get it. So I read somewhere that there is another option called Directory Server and maybe that is possible to do. According to your experience do you recommend any 'how to' or 'tutorial' that will permit implement a PDC server for authenticating and sharing files and printers for windows and linux clients?

I set up a Samba server on my openSuSE 11.2 machine and I can connect to it locally with the local ip and with my actuall ip. My friend however cannot. I tried to have him ping my ip and that wouldn't even work. I'm confused and wondering why it doesn't work. We share a lot of files and this would make both of our lives much easier.
