Ubuntu :: Get (permanent) Transparent Windows With Transset On Openbox?
Oct 28, 2010
I want my Terminal to look transparent, just like this: [URL]
I tried to use xcompmgr with transset but
1) after doing "transset 0.35" and clicking on the Terminal-window, it only stays transparent for as long as I don't close it or reboot => its not permanent. Next time it's non-transparent again
2) the WHOLE window is transparent, even the title- and menubar! But I just want to have the black textarea be transparent (like in the pasted screenshot)
But it somehow seems to be possible, since the screenshot is also taken from an openbox environment.
If you install transset then you can set the transparency of your windows and this is very handy when you have lots going on and you can see through your current window that something underneath it has updated...
However transset doesn't seem to work lately? Does it still work for you? Does anyone know if this is this something that happened with a recent update ?
I've been trying to change some of the icons in my system. I first tried the GUI. This changed the icon in the start menu, on the panel, and on the desktop, but it doesn't change the icon in the left-hand corner of open windows or in the task bar in the panel. I then went in and did it manually by editing the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications. Same thing...the icons in Openbox windows are the old ones. My guess is that Openbox is looking elsewhere for icons, but I dont really know.
I have been successfully creating permanent windows share mounts on Ubuntu since v8.04 by following the instructions in [URL] My fstab file has this line
which in the past has mounted the windows share without any problems. For some reason this doesn't work anymore. The .smbcredentials file is in the same place it has been since it was created. I have verified that .smbcredentils is in the correct place. In order to find out what the problem might be, I tried
Code:
dmesg | tail
and got the following response
Quote:
[ 18.428245] type=1503 audit(1272697118.037:15): operation="capable" pid=1249 parent=1245 profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd" name="sys_admin" [ 18.432914] usb 1-1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by usblp while 'usb' sets config #1 [ 19.516273] CIFS VFS: No username specified
[code]...
I can't pretend that I understand the full message, but it seems to say that it can't find/read the .smbcredentials file and as a result can't mount the share. When I change the code to
where xxxx is my username and password, the share mounts without any problems.I can't work out what I am doing wrong. Has the code changed? For obvious security reasons I don't want to place the username and password in the fstab file where everyone can see it.
I like the compositor options I get from Xubuntu rather Ubuntu because I havent really found a way to make the inactive windows transparent in Ubuntu. But I also like the transparency options I get for the panels on Ubuntu. I can make the panel transparent but keep the icons and text and Im pretty sure launchers not. Is there a way I can edit the panels in such a way in Xubuntu or vise versa for Ubuntu with the compositor options on Xubuntu?
First Screenshot is Ubuntu Second Screen shot is Xubuntu
I want the red transparent panel from Ubuntu on Xubuntu or the compositing style from Xubuntu to Ubuntu.
i have compiz-fusion install on my ubuntu and it has crashed. i was setting the transparency for the title bars of windows (trying to). suddenly compiz just crashed and now everything is transparent! i can only see docky and the menu bar on top. all windows and menus are 100% transparent. i am have a dual-boot with windows and am using it now. i also have ext2 reader installed, so i can access my files on ubuntu.
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and installed conky; I'm using the configuration attached, but as I do not know very much about it I do not know how to fix this. Every time I start ubuntu, conky shows above all other windows with a transparent space above it; every window I open appears as it is below conky (first image). To fix this I have to open the conky file and save it to reload it and then it stars again as it should (second image). Is there something I have to change in the conky file so whenever I start Ubuntu it shows as the second picture?
ive recently switched from kde to gnome and am now using fedora 13. i really like some of the desktop features in kde where it had highlighted windows, transparent windows etc
with the latest versions of kde it was very easy as i just clicked "add themes" or "add splash screens" etc and it was all automated. im having a little more difficulty now that im a linux gnome noob.
Is it possible to run Openbox/Gnome in 10.10? My goal is to change virtual desktops with the mouse scroll wheel. I've installed Openbox, but Openbox/Gnome will not work.
I am using ubuntu + openbox.Openbox does not use any program to managed the desktop,so I only could see a black screen. What file do i have to edit for change the colour?I don't want to use a program (like nitrogen to select a background image etc).
I've got an Ubuntu server installation with openbox installed. I also installed wbar and want to have it load with openbox. Is there a config file for openbox or anything like that?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I've been looking to customize what's given as my command prompt, and I learned how to do this by entering PS1="desired text" which is remarkably straight forward.
I'm a little stuck on how to make this permanent though. If you just type in that command, then when you close that terminal session and open a new one, it resets to the old/default prompt. I read the tutorial at:
and it referred to editing the .bashrc file in ubuntu. I found the bash.bashrc file in /etc/ and edited the line that said PS1=, however it didn't change my command prompt. I searched for other files relating to bash and in clear instances that PS1= was given, I changed it to see if the command prompt would change. This has been to no avail so far though.
Does anyone know which file needs to be edited/what needs to be done in order to make a customization of the command prompt permanent?
I have ufw on a 8.04 LTS machine and I have vsftp running on it. Now, I have a standard deny all but when I do ufw allow ftp and restart ufw is ok, I can reach my ftp. But... after reboot I can't and the 21 and 20 ports are not open anymore. I know it is a shame but I solved it in a very very dirty way. I have a script that takes ip ranges from a list file at boot and makes a blackhole routing for them and then, I included two lines in it commanding ufw to open ftp and restarting it. It works, but I want to know why were my changes not permament.
I read this article as a way to do a non-permanent of something. I saw 2 problems. The first that my rm is located at /bin/rm. I would assume I would change the location to /bin/rm. The second my rm is a executable file and not a text file. So will replacing my rm file with the shellscript below work? I would think they would need to be the same type of files.
I have just installed Lubuntu (from Ubuntu). I would like to add a few items to the right-click menu. I tried doing it using ObMenu as well as directly by editing the configuration files in /home/{user}/.config/openbox, but the default remains unchanged (even after reloading the configurations from the right-click menu or rebooting). Could someone give detailed instructions (e.g. where should I add some apps so as to see on the right click applications list?). The default on my right-click are a file manager, a browser and a terminal.
Also, I dont see a way to edit the main menu (the one at the lower left corner of my screen) anymore, although I remember to have accessed it from the main menu somewhere.
i have recently installed arch linux with just openbox and tint2. i have heard that openbox is a light desktop enviroment but at boot it uses about 300 mb of ram and it seems alot to me.i am also trying to get alt+F2 hotkeys to open gmrun so i added this to the openbox config file:
<!-- Keybindings for running applications --> <keybind key="C-F2"> <action name="Execute">
In this link, the last poster describes a way to disable tap click which I find VERY useful, but the thing is, after I reboot it goes away. Is there anyway to make this command permanent?
I use Ubuntu 10.04 and after installing the driver for my onboard video card, I can no long boot into Ubuntu. I'm thinking that if I was somehow able to remove it, this might fix the problem. Is there a way to do this, possibly from the boot cd?
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 CLI with Openbox as the WM on my Dell laptop. I installed gnome-power-manager because I like to suspend my laptop when the lid is closed. When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.
it is possible to create a right click menu like that on fluxbox, openbox,... I am using GNOME. I know how to create entries in nautilus action but i don't know how to create "applications", "places", "system" entries.
After installing UNR, I found the unity interface to be lacking advanced features, support on forums and tweaks. So I installed the ubuntu desktop, but I kept maximus (and tweaked the list of apps which shouldn't be maximized, so I am pretty happy with maximus). Since netbooks aren't as fast, I wanted to get a more lightweight desktop environment. I started with replacing Metacity with Openbox (since it seems to be quite popular). I noticed that after logging in my memory usage was 186 MB and 189 MB after running ubuntu tweak, for both window managers. If Openbox would be as lightweight as it claims to be I find it rather strange that I don't notice any difference in memory usage. (about my "test": I changed the default window manager using ubuntu tweak, logged out and logged back in to start a new session, opened system monitor to measure memory usage)
i have installd lubuntu side to my gnome i like it i have a issue thoe it seams that some of the icons r hideing beyond the screen resolution there for i dont see them all in the screen i tried messing with the screen margins in the openbox configuration i can see all the icons but then i cant see windows in full view
I ran ubuntu 10.04 for about half a year now-but rarely logged into it. Recently, I wiped ubuntu 10.04 and installed lubuntu 11.04 with the intentions of ditching open box/lxde and just installing fluxbox. However, I like openbox/lxde combo a LOT so I'mma gonna keep it. My question is: I would like to be able to do one of two things: Either ctrl+alt+del to lock the workstation when I leave it OR have a window popup up with lock desktop/log-out/restart/shutdown options listed. I am familair with installing applications on linux and can use google fairly well so if someone knows a way to do the second option(preferable) and can get me off in the right direction about what pckgs I'd need that would be great! Thanks. John PS: there is a button like this by default on lubuntu 11.04 but it has NO lock desktop option on it.
