Ubuntu :: Lightweight Netbook Environment - Openbox Vs Metacity

Dec 27, 2010

After installing UNR, I found the unity interface to be lacking advanced features, support on forums and tweaks. So I installed the ubuntu desktop, but I kept maximus (and tweaked the list of apps which shouldn't be maximized, so I am pretty happy with maximus). Since netbooks aren't as fast, I wanted to get a more lightweight desktop environment. I started with replacing Metacity with Openbox (since it seems to be quite popular). I noticed that after logging in my memory usage was 186 MB and 189 MB after running ubuntu tweak, for both window managers. If Openbox would be as lightweight as it claims to be I find it rather strange that I don't notice any difference in memory usage. (about my "test": I changed the default window manager using ubuntu tweak, logged out and logged back in to start a new session, opened system monitor to measure memory usage)

General :: Lightweight Desktop Environment For Netbook?

Aug 2, 2010

I'm currently installing Arch Linux on my old netbook. What desktop environment should I use? GNOME and KDE both seem way too big and unnecessarily fancy for what I want to do with my basic netbook. I just want internet, read pdfs, run emacs. no fancy stuff. What should I use? xfce? lxde? and why?

General :: Favorite Lightweight Desktop Environment?

Jul 22, 2011

For a while I have been searching for a new desktop environment to use on my netbook, since gnome 3 is too heavy for it. Currently it is running ubuntu because unity is lighter than gnome 3, but I am planning to go back to fedora at some point in time. So far I found LXDE to be my favorite, after trying XFCE and Enlightenment.I'm not looking for a solution here, just opinions, what is your favorite lightweight desktop environment (and with which WM if you wish) and why?

Ubuntu :: Netbook Edition Environment Not Working?

Oct 26, 2010

i am currently using ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition and i recently noticed the net book edition option in the login screen. i googled a bit on it an liked the screenshots. so decided to give it a try. i dunno what the problem is but after i login, i just get a plain screen ( no application panel or the side panel )but the options work.. i just don't see them on the screen. like when i click on the left top corner, i get the proper window and i can start apps from it.. i just cant see the panel or the side bar. and the other problem is that after any app is launched, i wont get the title bar also.. btw, here is a screenshot of the desktop. notice the bands at the top and the side. those are supposed to be my panels.. but no icons. if i click on the extreme top left i get the menu for selecting options like web music etc.

Ubuntu :: Any Way To Trim 9.10 Down (Lightweight)?

Mar 30, 2010

I was running it portable on a 4gb usb drive via virtual box which worked great unless I used a computer that had virtualbox on it. The portable version would remove files that the original version needed. I decided to try Qemu. The problem is that the portable version only allows 1gb of space to install regardless the size of a usb drive. so the question is: Is there was a way to trim ubuntu 9.10 down to less than 1gb of disk space? If not is there another portable emulator that could be used instead? the only uses for this are for the use of evolution and opera in a linux environment.

Ubuntu :: Lightweight VPS Configuration ?

Apr 2, 2010

My issue is that I have a small VPS (512MB, 1024 burstable RAM) and I am planning on using it as an application server for say a voice server and maybe a small game server.

Coming from a Windows background, the only way I know to do this is to have a GUI + Remote Desktop and download + install the servers and run them as one normally would on a desktop PC.

But obviously this would eat up a considerable amount of my RAM.

Is there a way to download and run something like Teamspeak 3 just through the kernal alone?

If possible, is it worth the hassle (especially if I am running multiple server applications)? Or am I better off using a desktop environment + Remote Desktop?

Ubuntu :: Lightweight Alternative To Gnome-do?

Jan 8, 2011

With gnome-do, you can do things as quickly as possible (but no quicker). In a low-spec application, the 'do uses up ~16mb of ram even in idle mode, if I recall correctly. Are there any lighter alternatives to gnome-do? It's so useful - but I feel like its functionality could be even snappier.

Ubuntu :: Can't Use Metacity And Compiz Effects Together

Feb 27, 2010

I'm on a Sabayon Linux install, and the Sabayon forums and stuff have NO idea what I'm talking about and keep giving me "facepalms"

So in Ubuntu I could enable desktop effects and simply use my metacity themes.

In Sabayon, when I enable Compiz, it changes my window theme manager to Emerald. I want to use metacity, not Emerald. They kept telling me it wasn't possible when I used Compiz effects and Metacity together all the time.

Ubuntu :: Get Annotation Tool For Metacity?

Mar 10, 2011

My workstation has a Nvidia Quadra FX550 graphics card which affects compiz in a very bad way; movies is often just black screened, Blender runs extremely slow etc. Switching to Metacity makes the computer much more robust without any glitches.

I would gladly move to Metacity if not for a big BUT; the annotation tool in Compiz which I use all the time. Not having that makes me a handicapped animator.

So, is there some sceen annotate tool that works in Metacity?

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

General :: Resolution Overclocking Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 On An Asus Eee 4G Netbook

Aug 30, 2010

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...

Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?

Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .

And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

Ubuntu :: Running Compiz At Login Instead Of Metacity?

Nov 21, 2010

I would like to be able to use compizconfig-settings-manager to set some custom settings for compiz, and then have compiz be the window manager that runs when I log in. The trouble is that I cannot seem to find a good way to have compiz run at log in. I can add "compiz --replace" to my startup programs list, but this loads metacity and then replacing it with compiz and seem to add a bit to the startup time (not to mention it seems to be slightly unreliable).

Further, I tried this: Uninstalled compizconfig-settings manager. In appearance preferences, set visual effects to normal. Everything seems to work fine until I log in again, at which point no window manager runs. Setting visual effects to none makes metacity load.
