Ubuntu :: Conky Shows Above All Other Windows With A Transparent Space Above It
Jul 26, 2011
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and installed conky; I'm using the configuration attached, but as I do not know very much about it I do not know how to fix this. Every time I start ubuntu, conky shows above all other windows with a transparent space above it; every window I open appears as it is below conky (first image). To fix this I have to open the conky file and save it to reload it and then it stars again as it should (second image). Is there something I have to change in the conky file so whenever I start Ubuntu it shows as the second picture?

I am using conky 1.8.0-1.1 in my debian box. My wallpaper changes automatically after every 15 min. Based on the color sometimes it is difficult to understand the conky message. That's why I need semi-transparency which can be controlled upto a level where I can read conky easily. I have already tried with without any success

In the past I've been using the work around with feh to grab a copy of the image used for the background in KDE, however with the upgrade to Slackware 13.1 / KDE 4.4.3 this no longer happens.

My Conky Gmail script is working beautifully. But it looks like this in Conky:
FROM: Jane Smith
"Forks and Spoons"
FROM: W. Able
"Golden Leaves"
FROM: Owen Harrison
"Passage?"
And I'd like it to show up like this:
FROM: Jane Smith
"Forks and Spoons"
FROM: W. Able
"Golden Leaves"
FROM: Owen Harrison
"Passage?"
Here's the script I'm using ("case s" specifically) -
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use Switch;
use Text::Wrap;
my $what=$ARGV[0]; .....

My linux version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 5) 64-bit.
One of my file system's df -h output shows
But when I'm going to create any file or folder it shows no space available. When I put df -i it shows not much more space available.
How can I resolve it? How can I clear the unlinked or unused inode? or how can I control the inode to prevent file system full?

I don't know how to explain this but the free space indicator in folders shows a different number than in Gparted. The Picture pretty much shows it all.

I have a dual xeon e5420 server w/ 16GB ram running 5.3 x64 that I was trying to partition out in the following configuration:
250GB on / (root)
4.2TB on /home
50GB on /tmp
2GB on swap
The issue is that no matter what size I set the swap space to in anaconda if always shows 8GB when I "df -h". I've tried setting it to 2GB 1GB and 512MB all with the same result.

Transmission used to show space remaining on the drive you choose in the add window. Now it doesn't. Was this removed? I LOVED that convenience of not having to go to a separate file browser or terminal to show space. I tried posting at Transmissions forums but it's been 4 days with only 7 views and no reason to bump b/c the forum is so slow I'm still on the front page.

I like the compositor options I get from Xubuntu rather Ubuntu because I havent really found a way to make the inactive windows transparent in Ubuntu. But I also like the transparency options I get for the panels on Ubuntu. I can make the panel transparent but keep the icons and text and Im pretty sure launchers not. Is there a way I can edit the panels in such a way in Xubuntu or vise versa for Ubuntu with the compositor options on Xubuntu?
First Screenshot is Ubuntu
Second Screen shot is Xubuntu
I want the red transparent panel from Ubuntu on Xubuntu or the compositing style from Xubuntu to Ubuntu.

I am looking for such a tool, very much like the one that is on Windows 7, where you can basically with one glance see how much of a volume is occupied (graphical bar) and that for all mounted volumes. I have been looking for this, but so far I have not found it.Also, important: that it is auto updated. So that it is not like a report that was generated and then does not change anymore, but a live thing

I want my Terminal to look transparent, just like this: [URL]
I tried to use xcompmgr with transset but
1) after doing "transset 0.35" and clicking on the Terminal-window, it only stays transparent for as long as I don't close it or reboot => its not permanent. Next time it's non-transparent again
2) the WHOLE window is transparent, even the title- and menubar! But I just want to have the black textarea be transparent (like in the pasted screenshot)
But it somehow seems to be possible, since the screenshot is also taken from an openbox environment.

with the latest versions of kde it was very easy as i just clicked "add themes" or "add splash screens" etc and it was all automated. im having a little more difficulty now that im a linux gnome noob.

There is a very conspicuous inaccuracy in the output of df. I should mention, that it was noticed to to a sudden change in the amount of space that was left on the backup partition. The df -h command produces the following output.

if you do the command conky in terminal, it starts conky ofcourse, but it also shows output to that terminal so you can't do any other commands to that terminal, Is their an option like you can do with the '&' sign in other cases? If you do the '&' sign with conky it still gives output, also the conky -d command gives output...

Every time I boot, conky (the system manager tool) is on top of all other windows. Every time I restart conky (save the .conkyrc file) it ends up under all the windows. Here is my conkyrc up to the TEXT part:
Code:
######################
# - Conky settings - #
######################
update_interval 1
total_run_times 0
[code]....
If nothing else, is there some command I that restarts conky other than saving the conkyrc file?

Said that all the config i find put all the info in one place of the screen, in this example on the right side:
url
or like conky colors where you can put in either side, or other complex examples that use folders with images..that at least i need one day to study all the variables it has...
What i want is something simple, in my black background i dont want images and effects, only white simple text.
My problem is: i want for instance my specs above, my log info in the middle, my music info bellow (above my clock) and in conky config i'm hitting my head in the wall....
For instance if i use my facebook script to appear in the midle how the hell can i put my music info bellow without ruined the facebook in the midle...do i need 2 conky configs?

I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows
150gb ext4 | Free 600gb | RECOVERY 31GB NTFS | HP_TOOLS 108MB FAT
What can I do to recover my windows back?
