I really like KDE 4.4.3, which comes with Slackware 13.1. It is very responsive even on my Pentium III IBM laptop, and that, even with Nepomuk, Akonadi, and Strigi running! However, I'm building Linux from Scratch 6.7 on that laptop right now and I decided that I wanted a much lighter-weight X environment for building LFS because I really only need Firefox and Konsole. The other stuff that's running in KDE that make it nice to use day to day simply uses resources that aren't needed when I'm mostly just compiling software.
So I started looking for light WMs. I played a lot with TWM, which I like. But I wanted to be able to Alt-Tab between Firefox and Console. I think I can do that if I customize the .twmrc, but I haven't got that far with it yet. So I built and installed Openbox from Slackbuilds.org, along with the Tint2 panel/taskbar. It works perfectly for what how I want to use it!
So, in any other Desktop WM, wicd never asks for passwordyesterday I installed Openbox,etc from SlackBuilds and each time I start Openbox it asks for my user's password.I did some googling but couldn't find anything regarding Slackware & wicdand I'm using -currentUser is part of netdev group so what's the issue
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed debian with minimal packages (without an any X components). Later I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel , xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd ... and other X components through apt-get. Created a Xorg.conf file.
On execution of X, I see black screen without cursor. What are the other minimal packages that I need to install in order to run any window-manager like openbox.. ?
Is it possible to run Openbox/Gnome in 10.10? My goal is to change virtual desktops with the mouse scroll wheel. I've installed Openbox, but Openbox/Gnome will not work.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi have recently installed arch linux with just openbox and tint2. i have heard that openbox is a light desktop enviroment but at boot it uses about 300 mb of ram and it seems alot to me.i am also trying to get alt+F2 hotkeys to open gmrun so i added this to the openbox config file:
<!-- Keybindings for running applications -->
<keybind key="C-F2">

When my .xinitrc contains exec /usr/bin/openbox-session My displays will turn off like there is no video output. I cannot switch to a TTY (or at least there is still no video when I try). I can however ssh into the machine. Alt+SysRq+K does not seem to kill the X session, but Alt+SysRq+B will reboot the machine.When my .xinitrc contains exec /usr/bin/openbox and I manually run sh .config/openbox/autostart.sh everything seems to go smoothly. I really don't understand the discrepancy.
#!/bin/sh
sleep 3s;
xsetroot -solid "#303030"

On KDE 4 everything fine.
I set openbox wallpaper with:
Code:
feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/image.jpg &
In ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh last line.
But some kind of KDE stuff overrides it and sets default again after few seconds. I can override it again with manual command. How can I set wallpaper then in openbox in proper way?
I use Eclipse IDE and there is a handy binding that I use when I'm running Eclipse on Windows that doesn't work under Openbox. Ctrl-Alt-Up causes a line to be duplicated. I've tried everything to have this key sequenced passed to Eclipse under Openbox, but it seems Openbox is taking itI've tried commenting out all the C-A-Up settings in rc.xml, but that doesn't seem to work. How to configure Openbox (or whomever) to pass the sequence on to the application?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly used to working with Fluxbox.There,if I want to let myself suspend the computer, all I have to do is add something like Code:[exec] (suspend) {sudo /usr/sbin/pm-suspend}to my .fluxbox/menu and it works like a charm, after having added me to the sudoers. I nstalled openbox earlier today because I was having some font rendering issues in flux and I've been trying to find a way to add something similar to my menu without success. I added this to .config/openbox/menu.xml:

Previous to XFCE4.6, I was using xfce-mcs-manager to provide me with icons and themes. Now that xfce-mcs-manager has been replaced with xfconfd, is there a program/daemon I can run at startup that I can use to gain icons in Thunar, and themes for menus and buttons and stuff inside my windows?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

I'm trying to install Puppy 525 on my Slackware 13.37 PC as a dual-boot using LILO. Puppy is living, all on it's own, in sda6, a 6 GiB partition. It got there by using the Puppy Universal Installer and selecting a 'Full' install, not a 'Frugal' install. I cannot find 'LILO' type instructions, only 'GRUB' type instructions.
Has anyone succeeded in doing a hard drive install of Puppy with the LILO boot loader?
Edit: I'll probably regret it, but I used Puppy's GRUB installer.
I'm a black screen guy, so i dont give to much to appearance, i always do a minimal debian install and build from this with openbox...but this time i get to test xfce and damn indeed has good looking, i just went to xfce4-settings-manager put as full and rgb and voila...good looking. Patched libcairo and better still.Back to Openbox i cant achieve the same result..no matter what i do, tried fonts.conf but in xfce just looks better....Any tut to appearance in Openbox.....what fonts do you install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed openbox and obmenu with everything seeming to run smooth , but I managed to mess something up. When right clicking my screen I get an error stating that I am missing root-menu. I cannot open terminal while inside openbox. So while out I used apt-get purge on both applications , and reinstalled. The problem is still there and cannot right click or super+t for terminal. I've found other problems same as mine , but with being able to access the terminal while in.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using the default Gnome desktop environment on my server when I connect via VNC, but I've been trying to Openbox on Crunchbang lately and I rather prefer it for being so light. I'm a relative noob and don't want to cock anything up - what's the simplest way to switch to the Openbox environment for when I connect via VNC, and once that's working, whats the safest way to remove Gnome?

I can't start Openbox, using xinit or startx. I have a warning when using xinit:
Code: Select all***** Imlib2 Developer Warning ***** :
This program is calling the Imlib call:
imlib_context_free();
With the parameter:

I don't have dbus, display managers, X is started on tty3 because I reduced the number of ttys. In xinitrc there is
Code: Select allexec openbox-session
I see a cursor appearing for a second, but then the screen goes back to tty.
The problem is new; I'd been using Openbox for a couple of months back then, and it was fine.
System is Unstable.
Im currently fitting Openbox to my needs.I want to autostart my email-app (Icedove) on the second desktop, if possible with a given size and position.I googled that already and searched th forum, but did not find anything related to it
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible (without too much difficulty) to have an Openbox/Gnome desktop?
Since Gnome is a full desktop environment and Openbox is only a Window Manager.
Use the Gnome DE and have Openbox WM, instead of Metacity or Compiz? (with Ob Config & Menu included)
I know it won't be near as light as a straight Openbox, but it would add Ob convenience to Gnome DE. What do you think? Work-arounds?
On a small partition I have LinuxMintDebian 'testing' (Gnome) x64 ... can I 'add' Openbox? Not replacing anything except the WM?
after a while of using Gnome with Fedora 12, I installed Openbox and started the configuration process. Everything is pretty much just the way I like it, but when I open the package manager and try to install something, it says "Authorization failed: you have failed to provide proper authentication. Please check any passwords or account settings" I'm sure it's because I forgot to add something to my autostart.sh, but I'm not sure exactly what...
