Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04, No Option To Load Along Side Of Windows 7?
Jun 19, 2011The only options I get for loading Ubuntu 11.04 on my HP 2000-219DX Laptop is: 1. completely remove windows 7 and download Ubuntu, or 2. Manually partition the HD. I'm no computer wiz and am fairly new to GNU/Linux so I really don't know what the problem might be. I need the windows os for work but would prefer to run the Ubuntu distro for personal computing. I have the same problem with Ubuntu 10.10, so no Ubuntu for this laptop until I can get this problem solved.

Ubuntu :: Two Hard Drives - Format One Of Them ?
Mar 30, 2011I have a nice computer i have been dual booting between either ubuntu or win7. i am wanting to remove win7 and install winxp sp3, so i can use media center with my xbox. i preferred that win7 work, but since my copy is not genuine, its authenticity is believed to be the culprit in connection errors with the xbox. i have not been able to find a linux alternative, which i doubt even exists due to the proprietary nature of the xbox.
So, my question is how do i reformat the win7 hard drive? are there issues i need to worry about that may reformat both hard drives on accident? and when the hard drive is formatted, will i be prompted to choose which hard drive to install win xp on?

Jun 2, 2011I am trying to install windows 7 over Ubuntu, however when i run the install disk it tells me that my hard drive is not formatted in the correct format. I have then loaded up Ubuntu, tried to re-format using Gparted and it won't let me re-format my hard drive when I right click on it. The only option I get when right-clicking is to unmount the drive.

The 400GB has the OS and SWAP while the 1TB are going to be used as storage....
Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"
Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

Nov 23, 2010I just started working with Linux over the weekend. I do have a working dual booting system but it's not configured exactly how I want it to be. Currently Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu are on the same hard drive but different partitions. The Windows boot screen comes up and I can select Windows or Ubuntu fine. Grub comes up when I select Ubuntu and I can successfully select any choice in the menu and it will run properly.
Everything works great now so you may wonder why I even want to keep tinkering, well, it's not working how I want it to. This is what I want it to do. I want Windows 7 on disk 0 and Ubuntu on disk 1. I want each OS to have it's own hard drive. I want Grub to be the only boot loader that comes up with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. I want to skip the window's OS selection screen all together. I can modify Grub, I've already done some of that on my work computer.
I've been installing from windows. Should I use a CD instead? Would that accomplish my goals without doing anything special?

Aug 26, 2010I am writing as yesterday, my fourth hard drive within 2 years crashed. Is that normal? One was crashing 2 years ago, one in winter 2009 and 2 just within 2 weeks. What can be the reason for so many crashes? I heard maybe the power supply? How can I find out if that's broken? The voltages at least in BIOS seem normal. The SATA controller? How do I know if its broken? Can I just but one PCI-E card with SATA adapters? Is it the motherboard? Theres not much more in my computer... As well, its wired that my good-old 160 GB drive never crashed, only constantly the bigger ones. Here some typical error code from mount and dmesg:

Jan 17, 2011I am running OSX Tiger (10.4.11) here on my trusty old G4 MDD with a "giga" 1.4gig CPU accelerator and doing quite well with it actually.I have discovered Gimp and Inkscape and love the open source concept.I registered only a few days ago, and have been lurking around to see if I can get a look at Ubuntu in action.Would it be possible to install some version of Ubuntu on a partition of one of my internal hard drives and be able to boot it, using the option key at power-up time?I guess this would be called a "dual-boot" situation.If so, can someone provide a link as to what to download.

I downloaded the Ubuntu Netbook edition [URL], and doing the same as before I wanted to select the " install them side by side" option. But in the installation menu (which is not the same as on screenshots on the [URL] where they use the screenshots from desktop edition) there is no such option. Is that only possible with the desktop distribution?

Aug 23, 2010I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Nov 18, 2010I had installed windows XP and then Ubuntu a few months ago. I was mostly using Ubuntu only. My Ubuntu is up to date. Windows XP got the blue screen and i had to re-install it. So, i used the Disk Utility and formatted my C-drive as NTFS with a boot flag.
After that, when i attempted to install windows XP on my C-Drive that i just formatted, Windows Setup is unable to recognize any drives! I really don`t want to uninstall Ubuntu or format my whole HDD, just to install windows XP. But i also want to install windows XP as i have to run some applications in it!.

Oct 7, 2010We were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.

Jun 3, 2010Months ago one of my computers died. I have bought a brand new one laptop, but I have a problem at the moment I wanted to install Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows 7: the new partition that windows 7 reserves for securing system files.
There are three partitions: Windows 7 principal, Windows 7 for securing system files (at the drive's beginning) and the recovery partition that HP puts there. Then I only have option to resize the Windows principal partition and get another principal partition. My question is if you know how to deal with this?
The other option you can help me is to advise me about some external hard drives to install ubuntu in them and don't touch the internal disk of my laptop.

Jun 21, 2010I'm a n00b at dual booting and I plan on installing Ubuntu 10.04 on a separate hard drive than my Windows 7 64 bit one in a dual boot situation. I have read that you can do this by unplugging the Windows hard drive, install Ubuntu on the other one, and than plug the Windows hard drive back in and everything will be fine and dandy. Is this correct? If it is, will I have to manually set the Primary and Secondary drive (in the BIOS I think?), or will it automatically do that.

I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.

When i boot into Windows my clock time changes, about 5 hours.I have another computer with Ubuntu 10.10 installed, but it will not install on this computer, Debian Did. Sep 1, 2011trying to install 11.04 on an older HP nc6220 laptop that is currently running XP Pro.While running Ubuntu from the thumb-drive has been successful, with everything working so far, the installation doesn't seem to be giving me all of the options that previous installs on other machines have.
For instance, when I click on the option to install Ubuntu, I'm only getting the option to install 'over' XP Pro and not along side it. There is however one other option, 'something else', where I believe that you can manually create the partitions, however it's all greek to me. Is there a specific reason why I'm not getting the option to install 'along-side' XP pro?
For whatever it's worth, when it does the checks just after clicking the 'install' option, it says that I'm good to go -as far as available space and internet connection. Do I just have to manually create the partitions, or is there anyway to get the option to install 'along-side' XP pro?
