Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Remove The Damn Fglrx Drivers

i'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS and my GTK is amd radeon HD 6850. yesterday, i ran ubuntu 10.10 with the fglrx offic. drivers properly on my native resolution and with 3D acceleration, though i couldn't run my favorite game minecraft, so i tried to reinstall. by this, i accidentally formated my windows partition, so all i've got now are my live cd's and this installation of 9.10, where i downloaded the official drivers what didn't work, then upgraded to 10.04 LTS and can't remove the damn fglrx drivers. the error i get is: [URL]
how to get this working? i love ubuntu, i hate windows, it isn't an option for me to get back to windows, the only way i want to use it is for steam games [by the way, will there be steam for linux?] like cs:s, tf2, dow2, which i dont play that frequently as minecraft [i play this every day, on my fav server majncraft.cz]

Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.
The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.
How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?
And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.

I need a quick answer if possible, is it better to remove the proprietary drivers before upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10? Or should i have the open source drivers installed? A clean install is not an option on this machine.

It's been a while since I last used the fglrx drivers, especially on my laptop which has an AMD RS690 based video adapter. While the Open Source drivers get the job done most of the time, and especially with Compiz-Fusion (yay!) these drivers still lack much optimization and since they don't intend to optimize the OpenGL stack for the current drivers and instead they'll work on it for the Gallium3D drivers, the situation is not going to get much better any time soon. However the Free drivers have gotten very robust and with very good support all in all.At first I used the fglrx drivers, but went with the Open Drivers for two main reasons:Radeon drivers were the first to get true KMS support, so they fully supported Plymouth.
Fgrlx drivers had (or still have?) a hideous bug in that they would cause screen flicker and tearing all over the place if you had a composited desktop. Wasn't as bad with Metacity's Composer Manager compared to Compiz, but still very annoying. Also they didn't properly had (or still have) RandR 1.2 support which means that if you attach a secondary display, you can't configure it as a different screen at a different resolution (for instance, main laptop display running at native 1280x800 and the secondary screen, like a projector, running at 1024x768), which the Open drivers get most of the time (note this isn't perfect in the open drivers either).
So i wanted to give the fglrx drivers a whirl once again and see how do they run... However I do not fully remember the steps involved in getting Plymouth running with the VGA/VESA console driver and the fglrx drivers (all I can remember is that it involved rebuilding the initrd [which in F12 is initramfs] to leave out the Radeon driver and you could still use the vga=[mode] argument to get Plymouth), the only other thing I can remember is that you had to run plymouth-set-default-theme to get the theme back. The main thing stopping me from going back to fglrx is that I'm not sure if all the composite issues have been resolved.

I have an ATI Radeon 4200 HD Mobility, with 256 MB of my RAM dedicated to it. I installed FGLRX, but the performance actually dropped compared to the open source drivers that come installed by default. I removed fglrx, and reinstalled the Radeon packages, but no avail.
Now, when I boot, I get the error, "unable to load module 'fglrx'," and my only option is to run Ubuntu in Safe Graphics Mode. This tells me that the computer is still trying to load FGLRX, and there's something that needs to be altered down at the boot level.

I installed the fglrx drivers in Ubuntu Natty for a ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card. Although compiz seems to work better, everything seems to be a blurry as compared to the generic graphics or while under Windows 7.For example, every other line displayed here while I type is more blurry than the others.I have a dual screen setup.

I can't get my fglrx drivers activated, every time I try I get an error message. I first tried going into System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers and activating it their but I get this error message: SystemError: installArchives() failed. I tried using some jockey command (my apologies as I can't quite remember the command) and I got the same error message. I was searching around on google and I someone said to type Code: aticonfig --initial Into a terminal and now my computer is running really slowly and I can't get it to run like normal. My windows scroll down in increments, when I try to move a window it jumps around, I can't handle how slowly this thing is going.

Today I spend the day updating to Fedora 15 (from 14). And by spent the day updating to Fedora 15, I mean that like the last 3 updates I've tried with Fedora, they end up getting hosed and I was forced to rebuild using a live disk. That being said I was able to install a fresh instance of Fedora, as well as use leigh123linux's "F15,F14, F13 & F12 Nvidia driver guides" thread to install the necessary drivers on my machine. However after the last reboot, I'm stuck with a funky top screen.

I have an old Omnibook my Dad let me have and I wanted some version of linux on it so naturally I am TRYING to install Damn Small Linux. Here is what I have done so far...
1. I took the hard drive out and used a usb to IDE cable and used the damn small linux live cd on my desktop and installed DSL on the hard drive using the USB HDD tool.
2. I put the hard drive back in the Omnibook and started the boot process
3. When I get to the desktop the screen is full of pink and green lines and I can make it the outlines of the desktop and the icons but cannot read them.
4. When I use the boot floppy to try and boot it and use fb800x600 cheatcode I get all the way to where it is supposed to load the desktop and it gives me this error:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests ( 0 known processed) with 0 events remaining Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I have been trying to install fglrx drivers for my ATI card with Debian testing (x86) but without any luck. I have tried what it says here http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary but I only come up with a blank screen (and also invoke-rc.d gdm stop does not work either?) I have also followed the directions at [URL]....html and that doesn't work either (make error 127). I must be doing something totally wrong.

I recently switched over to Debian 8 "Jessie" (64-bit Cinnamon flavor) on my Desktop.

I have been able to play multiple games on Steam without any issues, however I have downloaded Ark: Survival Evolved and am unable to actually play that game in particular. I can log in and get to a point of choosing a server, but after it actually loads to the game(where it starts rendering graphics), the game crashes to the desktop. Below is the readout of the crash from when I loaded Steam via Terminal.

I have noticed that the above (zenity:13343): Gtk-WARNING line in terminal is the point at which the game crashes. It would appear that the steam gameoverlayrenderer.so is a separate issue and may be a common occurence in the background that you just don't see.(?)
Things that I have done thus far:
-Verified that the video card is good
-Tried Open-source graphics drivers
-Currently using the AMD 15.9 Proprietary Drivers directly from AMD with Catalyst Control Center.
-Reinstalled "zenity" to ensure that it was not corrupted.
-Verified which Gtk+ versions that I have installed(see below)

Is there a "default" gtk+ version that I have to alter for it to recognize that I have Gtk+ 3.0 installed, or did I miss something somewhere?
My hypothesis:
-It has something to do with 32-bit/64-bit conflictions(Maybe the game? My steam is 64-bit)
-My graphics card may not be supported by Ark: Survival Evolved yet.
-I am missing some libraries each time I have attempted different video drivers.
-Something with steam did not get installed correctly(I have not attempted to uninstall and reinstall it, however other games function correctly)

I've installed fglrx drivers with 1click install on openSuse11.3. If I try to boot in "normal mode" I end up in black screen. However if I boot in safe mode, then login and startx, everything works ok

I always come back to Ubuntu because I love it. I love everything about it except for the fact that its video support is downright horrible. Why is this the Achilles Heel of Ubuntu? I run a P4 with 1.5 GB of RAM and run an nvidia GEForce 6200...Not the most up-to-date hardware, but I should be able to watch a ..... video in a resolution larger than 640x480 without it tearing and being unwatchable, shouldn't I? Sorry for the rant, but I've been messing with this for the last few weeks and I'm about to fork the money over for Windows 7 just to have this PC back up and running in an acceptable way. I've done every suggestion I've found here with Flash and nvidia drivers and think I'm just screwed now.

I'm 24 with excellent vision, and I'll be the first to say that DAMN Kubuntu's default font size is entirely too small! Does anybody else feel this way? By simply forcing 96 DPI it helps out quite a bit - but it's confusing that this wouldn't be enabled by default to begin with.

I have an external harddisk (actually removed from a laptop) and I want do some analysis and data recovery on it. I bought a sata-to-usb adapter. Now the problem is: if I deselect media_automount "media_automount_open" and I select "media_autorun_never", the external sata driver is not recognised and I have no /dev/sdb1 to manually mount. Not a hint of a newly plugged drive in dmesg.
Then I re-enabled automount and then I remounted the drives as read-only. Afterward I starter cloning the hd with dd.After some three hours, the f*ck*ng laptop remounted the partition rw and the dd process went into io error. So the question is: how can I safely work with a usb device with manual operations?

I want to build a system totally without network support. Does anybody know where the network-drivers are located? I think i need to know which packages/modules to uninstall also?
I am going to build a live-system out of it afterwards, and boot it from a USB. Don`t know if that has anything to say, but my experience has been that especially the /etc/network/interfaces keeps getting overwritten at boot-time as soon as I make it a live-system.
That`s why i was thinking of removing every network-driver upfront, such that Ubuntu has an empty database for network-cards.

In an attempt to correctly play Half-Life 2 in Wine, I installed the AMD driver downloaded from their site.

Reboot. Got OpenGL, but performance is choppy. Glxgears is very choppy.So how to revert to the old fglrx? There is an uninstall script at /usr/share/ati. Shall I run that or shall I reinstall all of the above removed packages beforehand?

I have a new ubuntu 10.04 amd64 installation (kernel 2.6.32-22) with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650. I tried to install the fglrx drivers from ati via the Software-Center and via apt-get. After installation, when starting the ATI CCC the following error message (sorry in german) appears:

Translation: Driver is either not correctly installed or it does not work properly. If I try to execute fglrxinfo in the console I get a "segmentation fault". I think I do not have to say that the driver does not work. I have removed and reinstalled the driver several times.

I have not been able to use Compiz Desktop Effects and playing videos in full screen is awful slow and choppy. I have DSL installed on an old desktop and I've never been able to get flash to install. I'm not sure which version it is. (how do I check?) I think it's from 2007. It uses firefox 1.0.6. I do not know how to install tar.gz files, though someone walked me through it once, but it still did not work.
Please do not send me to another page to read several paragraphs that will just confuse me anyhow.. This should be a simple enough question to answer for the experts.

I was trying to create a partition to share between Windows 7 (pre-installed, and I use it for some games and specific programs) and Fedora 15 (I use it for everything else), but when I tried to do this, apparently I already reached the maximum of primary partitions, 4. So I have 3 for Windows and 1 for Fedora!
The schema I have (see picture) is, 10.5 GB for windows recovery, 100MB for windows boot, 341GB for Windows 7, and 48 GB for Fedora, and it's in a dual boot. My intention was to leave about 100GB for Windows, 50GB for Fedora and the rest for shared files.
But I also don't want to format the recovery files, I had luck when windows broke and I could recover it with this files (I don't have the installation DVD, but it is original and validated), so I would like to keep those files.
1. I make a backup (I have no idea of how or if this is even possible) from fedora of this partitions and save them as files.
2. I try to include the /boot of windows in the big windows partition, but, is this really needed? Can I just delete the 100MB windows booter? (is it enough with the Fedora one or do I need this one?)
Is there a way to make more than 4 partitions? (it would be actually a 3rd option, but I didn't find any info online)

today I decided to try and install Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on a very old laptop. Unfortunately once installed, it refused to load the operating system. I am able to run DSL when I load it to RAM, but I am unable to install it to my harddrive correctly? The system on which I am trying to install it on is a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT.

I have an encrypted file system and recently installed proprietary ATI drivers for my graphics card. The moment I did that, Ubuntu boots with a black screen. Now I'm attempting to get back into the OS to remove the drivers, but when I choose Ubuntu Recovery Mode from the grub boot screen, it shows some dmesg output and then the screen goes black. Whats interesting is it doesn't even ask me to decrypt the hard drive (like it normally does). how I can get back into the OS to remove the drivers?

After having tried to fix the plymouth without any successfully result (i am meanning the thread i began few weeks ago and sited here: [URL]. I decided to keep nvidia's privates drives on giving up any hope to fix the plymouth bug and, right now, i would like to optimize or configurate the drivers properly like it is on Mandriva One 2010.
Perhaps someone is not exactly understand what i want to say. Well, i was using Mandriva One 2010 before installing Ubuntu Maverick and i have noticed there was no a low latency, lag effect, low performance or a lack of initial smooth and clean windows moves in Mandriva One 2010 but on Ubuntu there is.
This is very hard to explain for me, for example, If i use the "flip windows selector" (i mean, pressing "<Super>+Tab" keys) show me this effect too slow initially but if i forced the GPU for a while (repeating and pressing the keys), the lag effects vanished and then, the flip windows selector works nicely fast, clean and smooth. Now if i stop to use that effects, let the Nvidia GPU repose a while and use again the flip windows selector again, the lag effects come up again.
This fact does not just happen using the "flip windows selectos", any effects which minimize, resize or maxime the windows generate that annoying initial lag effects, for example, a simple minimize windows:
I am in despair with this, i do not if i have to do some change in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, what i have to configurate in the "Nvidia X server Settings" or in the "compiz manager settings" application.
Anyone knows a tutorial about how to optimize the Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu? or the Compiz effects to reduce the lag effets?

After upgrade to Lynx, all of my ATI drivers don't work. Whenever I try to run fglrxinfo I get " Segmentation fault " And for fgl_glxgears I get" Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer Segmentation fault " For sudo aticonfig --initial -f " Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-11 " Compiz does not work at all either.
