I have an old Omnibook my Dad let me have and I wanted some version of linux on it so naturally I am TRYING to install Damn Small Linux. Here is what I have done so far...
1. I took the hard drive out and used a usb to IDE cable and used the damn small linux live cd on my desktop and installed DSL on the hard drive using the USB HDD tool.
2. I put the hard drive back in the Omnibook and started the boot process
3. When I get to the desktop the screen is full of pink and green lines and I can make it the outlines of the desktop and the icons but cannot read them.
4. When I use the boot floppy to try and boot it and use fb800x600 cheatcode I get all the way to where it is supposed to load the desktop and it gives me this error:
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests ( 0 known processed) with 0 events remaining Does anyone know how I can fix this?
I'm 24 with excellent vision, and I'll be the first to say that DAMN Kubuntu's default font size is entirely too small! Does anybody else feel this way? By simply forcing 96 DPI it helps out quite a bit - but it's confusing that this wouldn't be enabled by default to begin with.
today I decided to try and install Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on a very old laptop. Unfortunately once installed, it refused to load the operating system. I am able to run DSL when I load it to RAM, but I am unable to install it to my harddrive correctly? The system on which I am trying to install it on is a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT.
hi: I just installed damn small linux on a Dell 233 Pentium w/ Toshiba CD-ROM XM 6102B, it works fine except for mounting CD's & Floppies (and I assume, although I haven't tried USB-Drives)
when logged in as root, and typing in mount dev/cdrom w/ a cd in a the drive the answer is no medium found
when using X mount floppy command, w/ a floppy in the drive, I get: Error: mount: relocation error: mount: undefined symbol: blkid_known_fstype
also, my cd-rom drive won't stay closed, which is really annoying,
I have DSL installed on an old desktop and I've never been able to get flash to install. I'm not sure which version it is. (how do I check?) I think it's from 2007. It uses firefox 1.0.6. I do not know how to install tar.gz files, though someone walked me through it once, but it still did not work.
Please do not send me to another page to read several paragraphs that will just confuse me anyhow.. This should be a simple enough question to answer for the experts.
i'm using ubuntu 10.04 LTS and my GTK is amd radeon HD 6850. yesterday, i ran ubuntu 10.10 with the fglrx offic. drivers properly on my native resolution and with 3D acceleration, though i couldn't run my favorite game minecraft, so i tried to reinstall. by this, i accidentally formated my windows partition, so all i've got now are my live cd's and this installation of 9.10, where i downloaded the official drivers what didn't work, then upgraded to 10.04 LTS and can't remove the damn fglrx drivers. the error i get is: [URL]
how to get this working? i love ubuntu, i hate windows, it isn't an option for me to get back to windows, the only way i want to use it is for steam games [by the way, will there be steam for linux?] like cs:s, tf2, dow2, which i dont play that frequently as minecraft [i play this every day, on my fav server majncraft.cz]
I've been trying to revive an old HP Omnibook XE-3 using Ubuntu. After some installation problems, I've finally managed to complete the command line installation on the system. I then proceeded to update the system and install X.org.
This is where my problem lies:
Everytime I try to use Code:
To get it running, it fails, no matter what the installed window manager/GUI is. XFCE and LXDE both fail, and even simple WMs like fluxbox fail. Even X.org on its own fails; All of them give me a black screen with which I cannot interact in any way.
Any ideas on what might be causing this? I'll be severely disappointed if it's a hardware issue, since I really want to get that old machine back on its feet. I should mention that I've been experimenting using a virtual machine set up in almost the same manner as the XE-3, and that one runs XFCE (the heaviest one I could possibly use on a less than 256 MB RAM machine) absolutely fine.
I have an old HP Omnibook XE3 that I want to use for P2P, Sopcast, viewing videos etc. I wanted to set up Ubuntu og Kubuntu but was not sure if the laptop could handle it. What do you guys think? Which distro would suit me best?
I always come back to Ubuntu because I love it. I love everything about it except for the fact that its video support is downright horrible. Why is this the Achilles Heel of Ubuntu? I run a P4 with 1.5 GB of RAM and run an nvidia GEForce 6200...Not the most up-to-date hardware, but I should be able to watch a ..... video in a resolution larger than 640x480 without it tearing and being unwatchable, shouldn't I? Sorry for the rant, but I've been messing with this for the last few weeks and I'm about to fork the money over for Windows 7 just to have this PC back up and running in an acceptable way. I've done every suggestion I've found here with Flash and nvidia drivers and think I'm just screwed now.
I was trying to create a partition to share between Windows 7 (pre-installed, and I use it for some games and specific programs) and Fedora 15 (I use it for everything else), but when I tried to do this, apparently I already reached the maximum of primary partitions, 4. So I have 3 for Windows and 1 for Fedora!
The schema I have (see picture) is, 10.5 GB for windows recovery, 100MB for windows boot, 341GB for Windows 7, and 48 GB for Fedora, and it's in a dual boot. My intention was to leave about 100GB for Windows, 50GB for Fedora and the rest for shared files.
But I also don't want to format the recovery files, I had luck when windows broke and I could recover it with this files (I don't have the installation DVD, but it is original and validated), so I would like to keep those files.
1. I make a backup (I have no idea of how or if this is even possible) from fedora of this partitions and save them as files.
2. I try to include the /boot of windows in the big windows partition, but, is this really needed? Can I just delete the 100MB windows booter? (is it enough with the Fedora one or do I need this one?)
Is there a way to make more than 4 partitions? (it would be actually a 3rd option, but I didn't find any info online)
I have an external harddisk (actually removed from a laptop) and I want do some analysis and data recovery on it. I bought a sata-to-usb adapter. Now the problem is: if I deselect media_automount "media_automount_open" and I select "media_autorun_never", the external sata driver is not recognised and I have no /dev/sdb1 to manually mount. Not a hint of a newly plugged drive in dmesg.
Then I re-enabled automount and then I remounted the drives as read-only. Afterward I starter cloning the hd with dd.After some three hours, the f*ck*ng laptop remounted the partition rw and the dd process went into io error. So the question is: how can I safely work with a usb device with manual operations?
My computer has a much bigger hard drive than 11 gb but that is all I have access to when I transfer files using an external hd -- can anybody set me straight as to what I did wrong installing dual boot ubuntu 10.10 on my windows 7 machine?

"preupgrade now requires at least 167MB" means more space could be needed, and I'm unclear if the above is sufficient.
I have installed the debian lenny base system in my old pc. I want only a minimal system with a small window manager like icewm and firefox to surf the web. What I need to write now in text mode to install this minimal system?
I've now upgraded three machines from 10.04 to 10.10, and they all share the same problem: resizing windows its next to impossible! I am finding it very difficult to place the mouse cursor at the exact point on the bottom right of any window to cause it to change to the resize cursor.
I would like to backup my entire Ubuntu installation (/boot, swap and /) at /dev/sda (4GB) to /dev/sdb (10GB).I recreated the exact partitions on /dev/sdb, formatted and cp -rp all the files over.For /boot, I used

It didn't boot successfully as the system kept rebooting. I then tried to install grub onto the MBR and boot partition (mounted at /mnt/tempboot).
it started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?
I installed 10.4 on my Satellite Pro via CD replacing XP. Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?
recently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.
so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.
i'm learning C now, later C++. using DJGPP isn't so nice on MS-DOS yet, no LFNs etc. and other limitations that is only one terminal, no multitasking etc.is there a small IDE for linux console? (i'm using a celeron 333 atm). for C it would be sufficient i guess?what i would need is a wide documentation, help on .h files, includes etc.on MS-DOS i use RHIDE. later on i might use eclipse or code::blocks. read another thread about c/c++ IDE.

I'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options? Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?
how to set up dns/bind but the issue I am hitting is that I want to just create a non internet domain setup ie t60.mysuperlan. desktop.mysuperlan. etc . Using a hosts file isn't the best as its pretty much about learning all the stuff to make it work.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 with both Gnome and KDE desktops. My default screen res is 1366x768, and there is no problem with KDE, Gnome indicates that my res is the same but everything on the screen looks too large. When I lunch an app like GIMP I can't see the inmenu icons, it's not a pain to die but sometimes makes work harder. At first I told it was the way Gnome looks (I have never before run linux on such a high res), but when I boot another distro like Debian everything is OK. Also my display mode is locked to laptop screen and can't be changed.I like my Gnome screen and don't want to move to KDE.

Rather simple question, but is there a way to make an archive (simple tarball, no compression needed) out of a very large file and split it into parts? Basically I need a ~1GB file in 25MB pieces.
