For some time now (actually, since I migrated to KUbuntu) the fonts at "log in" / "start up" are way to small to read.After start up / log in every thing is normal. Normal or proprietary drives makes no difference
Current setup:
Kubuntu 9.10 64 bits
Ati Video card
Monitor: Sony LCD screen (a TV)
The "System Settings/Startup Programs" window is large enough but the "Program" column is too narrow and it cannot be resized. The window can be dragged to make it larger but not the individual columns. It looks like a Java listbox with "Enabled = false" set. This occurs in Debian8 64 bit and also in Mint 17 and Mint LMDE2. I am surprised nobody else has raised the issue. I have a basic setup with 22" screen and 1680 x 1050 resolution. It occurs with Nouveau and NVidia drivers. It is not a critical bug so I have coped with it for 2 years but it would be nice to see it fixed. Unfortunately I could not upload a screen shot as "board attachment quota has been reached".
View 2 Replies View Relatedrecently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.
so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.
I'm 24 with excellent vision, and I'll be the first to say that DAMN Kubuntu's default font size is entirely too small! Does anybody else feel this way? By simply forcing 96 DPI it helps out quite a bit - but it's confusing that this wouldn't be enabled by default to begin with.

I recently switched from KDE to Gnome, and when i setup Kubuntu I checked "Do not require login at startup", so i didnt get the screen. When i switched to gnome, it still didnt show it, and for various reasons i want the login screen at startup. I am running Ubuntu 10.10.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just received a pennicle TV tuner card for my birthday so I installed mythtv. All I get when I start the frontend is a puke colored screen. There appears to be buttons, but they are so small you have to strain to see them. I had to set up a custom xorg-config file to get my resolution to work with my monitor because the nvidia driver couldn't properly detect the screen. According to some posts, that could be the problem but there were no solutions. I am at a loss as to what to do.
System information: Debian Squeeze on quad-core phenom (AMD64). Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card using the Nvidia driver. Pinnace TV tunner using Conexant CX2388x chipset.
I'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.
I'm passing for the following situation:
When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.
However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.
If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.
I hooked up Lucid to a 50" and adjusted the resolution to the max. Gives a clearer sharper picture but all the displayed items are tiny. Is there something I need to do that I haven't? I went from 1086x720 to 1400(approx)x900(approx) and created the problem. Now I'm back at 1086x720. I'm using the Nvidia 195 drivers.

My issue is, after I upgraded to fedora 13 and after upgrading wine, my wine configuration gui and all the gui's of all *.exe applications that I was using started having abnormally large gui's with equally large buttons and small fonts. I have attached a screenshot of the wine config GUI as it appears on my screen. My current screen resolution is 1280X1024 and I'm using an integrated ATI chip (ATI Radeon x200 express) with the mesa-dri drivers for display.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt appears to me that fonts for Linux in general are rubbish. They couldn't get any smaller. I am new to linux having moved over from windows. I have a website that uses the Verdana font. Not recognized in Linux. Just about every forum I go on the fonts are barely readable they are so small. My screen resolution is 1024x 768. If there is no solution to this problem then I'm afraid it's back to windows for me as I'm getting very bad eyestrain. I'm not jesting there. Are there better fonts that can be installed? Incidentally, I tried Ubuntu which is worse.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to upgrading from etch to lenny. After having upgraded, I find that the fonts are extremely small in all gtk applications (iceweasel, abiword, gnumeric, etc.)
Everything looked fine before the upgrade, but now the application fonts in the menu bars, dialogs, etc. are so small as to be unreadable. Also, when I open up gnumeric spreadsheets the fonts in the cells are unreadable. All my X-based applications (rxvt, xfig, xmms, etc.) look just fine, it's just the GTK apps that have the font problems.
Interestingly, web pages themselves render just fine in iceweasel. Also, abiword documents look fine even though the menus, dialogs, etc. are too small to read.
I was able to get a workaround for the application fonts. I put the following in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 code...
At 24 point the fonts are still a bit on the small side, though. And I still have problems reading information in the gnumeric cells.
I use the fvwm window manager without gnome or kde.
I'm not referring to "Gnome Login Sound" I'm referring to the login screen sound. Those 2 drum pats you hear when you start up Ubuntu, before logging in. I was using Macbuntu, and have switched back, however it never changed my login sound back to what it was suppose to be. I knew how to change everything else back, so i didn't just run a script with out knowing how to clean up after it, however this is the only thing I don't know how to do. It keeps looking into the macbuntu folder to get the sounds before i log in. Probably being able to simply set the sound theme in the login screen would fix this issue. I've tried using Ubuntu Tweak, but no such luck. If no one can't find a solution I'll just have to use the other folder from now on >.< However I'm quite certain there's a script somewhere, that I can edit. I just need to know where it's at.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm helping a colleague with his laptop, he finds the fonts within programs too small and they hurt his eyes. We have tried changed the fonts using System>Appearances>Fonts. Changed the dpi resolution in the "Details" section, and tried changing the screen resolution, but this doesn't work or make it better.
I have attached a screen shot to show the problem. As I hope you can see, the font size on the desktop and top tool bar is much larger than within the programs.
Can anyone help, we have looked through all of the menus we can think of, but nothing makes the font bigger.
I am setting up a CentOS server that has no screen connected, and only has 2 Tesla cards. I have created a minimal xorg.conf and xinitrc file that doesn't load mouse or keyboard, and only creates two screens, one for each card at 320x200x24 bit. This is so I don't waste VRAM on a framebuffer I can't see.
I modified the xinitrc to just load tdm and nothing else as GNOME is a RAM hog. I am then using this setup to render stuff offscreen using OpenGL into FBOs which I read back to CPU and process. Currently for development I just run startx& when I login. I now want to know how to set x server to start automatically at boot. The CentOS docs say that it will try to load the GNOME login manager. The thing is that I don't want a login manager as it is useless as I login remotely via SSH.So:
1 - how to enable automatic x server in CentOS (im used to Ubuntu so not sure how to do this on Red Hat variants)
2 - leave x server running without starting login manager
I have windows installed through virtual Box now but i have some questions. When i make it full screen it goes full screen but Windows stays in the middle of the screen small and doesn't adjust to the full screen. Can you make windows completely take up the full screen Can i access folders on my ubuntu drive ? i have a file in downloads i want in windows but don't want to reinstall it
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe GRUB2 menu loads up fine, and I am logged into Gnome okay right now, but in between Grub & Gnome, I see no log messages during startup. So far, it's just an annoyance, but one of these days an automatic fsck is going to find something, and I won't be able to see it. I have a custom kernel, with fglrx compiled into it, in case that matters. This system has never used radeon drivers, so I can't add any information about how this worked before fglrx; it just didn't work without it. I saw startup messages IIRC with kernel 2.6.32 / Debian 5.0, but I couldn't tell which of the many changes led to this little malfunction. Now using Debian 6.0 / kernel 3.0.0.
Hopefully, this is just a minor glitch in Grub2 or some other .conf file, maybe in /etc/X11.

View 4 Replies View Relatedjust migrated to Lucid from Jaunty and noticed that the login startup screen looks more like windoze (shows all authorized users).One of the endearing security checks with Unix was that if you had access to a console you had guess both userid AND password - the system wouldn't tell you which was wrong.I feel that we have lowered security by making the list of authorized users visible on a console. Is there any way to turn it off and force users to enter both userid and password?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
I use Ubuntu 10.10 with both Gnome and KDE desktops. My default screen res is 1366x768, and there is no problem with KDE, Gnome indicates that my res is the same but everything on the screen looks too large. When I lunch an app like GIMP I can't see the inmenu icons, it's not a pain to die but sometimes makes work harder. At first I told it was the way Gnome looks (I have never before run linux on such a high res), but when I boot another distro like Debian everything is OK. Also my display mode is locked to laptop screen and can't be changed.I like my Gnome screen and don't want to move to KDE.

That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
A friend of mine said he could make my system faster and preceded to kill some processes. I have no idea if that is related but my computer worked fine until I shut it down for a while. When I went back and turned it on it gives me a screen is mostly black with the terminal in the top left corner. If I type "exit" it takes me to the Ubuntu login screen with the colorful background and all. If I sign in it takes me right back to the previous described screen. I dont think it has anything to do with the graphics card or driver because on the login screen and even on the black screen I have a cursor. Plus using nano to view the Xorg log I saw no errors. I have also in desperation removed all Xorg.conf files and remade them and I have tried startx. dont tell me I should backup all my files and pop in an image disk and go from scratch

Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

I have just spent hours upgrading 10.10 to 11.04 Natty and when I rebooted at the end, all I'm getting is a small box on screen saying OUT OF RANGE.
I do not have grub or windows or anything else to boot into, ubuntu was my main system, what can I do?
I have just tried another monitor and get the same thing.
Is there anyway I can boot in safe mode or something?
I am able to boot PC with a live CD (Karmic) but cant acess most of my files because I am not the owner apparently? Cant change permissions either?
Is there a way I can change something using the live CD so that Natty will boot properly?
