Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Makes Eth0 To Go Down
Jan 11, 2010
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 x86 server edition and I switched to Ubuntu from Debian. The only problem I have now relates my Samba server. I installed Samba v 3.4.0 and suddently my network connection (eth0) goes down. I have never seen that before. This issue only happens when samba is running.

I think I can eliminate Media Companion as the problem since all other samba servers work with it.
I want to trouble shoot this but don't even know where to start. How do I figure out what makes OPENWRT samba server different from the other 100% working FREENAS and PC-01 Servers?
How would you go about trouble shooting this?

The problem is that samba shares files easily on eth0 while on eth1, every file gives a read error.
My config file is attached.
Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)
dns proxy = no

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.

I have two ethernet ports on my SuperMicro server. When I start the system, only eth1 is operable. If I ifup eth0, I get a message that it is already configured, but I can't ping any of the IPs on it.
If I ifdown eth1, then ifdown eth0 and ifup eth0, then I can ping any of the IPs on eth0 in the interfaces file. Of course, now eth1 is not reachable.

After rebooting, I found that the server couldn't see the network. The machine has dual gigabit ethernet (eth0 and eth1). eth0 is connected to the internet, but disappeared. ifconfig used to show eth0, eth1, and lo, but now only shows eth1 and lo. If I boot into rescue mode I can get internet and ifconfig returns eth0 and lo. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I apologize in advance if I ask any noob questions. I'm not a very experienced Linux user.

I have three VMs (VMWare Server 2) all running Ubuntu Server 10.04. (one I asked to be a samba share from the outset, the others are blank server installs, no pre-config)
I follow the layout in the community documentation regarding setting up firewall rules through iptables. I.e. I create a file called iptables.rules and place it in /etc. I then modify the /etc/network/interfaces file to look like this:
Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
[Code].....
However this third one I have reinstalled Ubuntu 3 times now, and every time as soon as I modify the /etc/network/interfaces file, eth0 fails to start up (is not visible in ifconfig, only the loopback adapter), and no networking works.
I have tried reducing the iptables.rules file (which is a carbon copy across all machines anyway) to a basic accept all rule, and it still doesn't like it. As soon as I remove those two extra lines in the interfaces file, the network starts up no problems and eth0 is there.

I've just setup Fedora 10 x64 on a Supermicro 7045 with dual nic; I setup a web site and ran into a strange problem; I can't see my website from outside my LAN; checking IP on Internet it sees my IP as coming for my dynamic IP (IP of router/switch) and not my static IP.
eth0: Static IP
eth1: Dynamic IP
These are standard Intel 82563EB Dual-Port Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
Is there a way to specify the order in which it sees the nic ports?
I'm wonder if I can mix Static and Dynamic IP's; on the outside they resolve to a static IP; the dynamic one shows up as my router/switch IP; but it allows me to access my DHCP computers; this isn't a web server; but a development machine for writing PHP apps.
Where 123.123.123.3 is my static IP address.
I should mention that nmap -v -p 80 123.123.123.3 shows an open port on 80
My VirtualHost is setup like:

If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got
Quote:
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ifconfig tells me
Quote:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c
inet addr:192.168.0.112 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::225:64ff:fee8:182c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

so I am at a loss. How do I stop and restart the network interface short of rebooting the machine?

5.10 Breezy configured as machine controller. Works great eth0 is a fixed IP to communicate with controller comms board. Not easy at all to alter - the comms board is hard coded to listen on eth0 for commands.
I can use eth1 as the default gateway and ping google.com, etc. But when I now attempt to communicate with the controller with netcat, e.g.
Code: echo !HH | nc 192.168.1.6 80
I obviously never get an answer since the request is passed via eth1. Using the -g option with netcat doesn't work either. I had a look at iptables but it doesn't seem to be able to do what I want. How I can still use eth0 as my communication port to the controller whilst eth1 is the default gateway?

I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

On my machine (Desktop PC) I have 2 network card : wireless (rt61 802.11) and a wired card (BCM44). When I install debian 5.
The wired card is detected and logical name eth0 is assigned, while wireless is not assigned I install firmeware* software to configure the card. It is done in some way ( I used mnetwork from mepis, it works fine).
Now the problem: eth0 disapears, and no eth0 inteface found? ifconfig gives just wlan0.
Question: Why there is no eth0, it was before configuration of wlan0 ?
How to active again eth0, or ho to create the logical eth0?

I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/Backtrack 4 (Ubuntu 8.10) system. I can get internet in the BT4 side but not in the Lucid side. In Lucid I can ping my router, and the network manager says I'm good to go, but I can't get to any web sites. I recently got myself a new hard drive and I want to use it as my Samba share. I just want the hard drive itself to store the files.I know once I get it set up it should be easy to tell Samba that's where I want it to store and look for files.Problem is I need to make it so the computer can use the hard drive first. I have already installed the drive. I just don't know how to get Ubuntu to recognize the drive.I also need to create a partition that uses the whole drive and format it to ext3, then I need to mount it somewhere for Samba to use. This would be easy to do with Ubuntu desktop, but I am using Ubuntu server and I don't know how to do it. I have read that I will need to use fdisk, but the post wasn't to clear on what to do.

I'm having problems with Ubuntu 10.04 samba PDC and windows7. I have a test network that I'm using to evauate 10.04 before I use it in production and have come across an intriguing problem with Windows 7. I have a clean brand-new installed Windows 7 ultimate and I have no problems joining the domain. (Standard registry modifications made). I can logon the window 7 box locally without a problem however when I try to logon using the domain the Windows 7 box accepts my password and start to load the user profile, at the point where the desktop would appear message is displayed to say "logging off" and returns me to logon screen.
What I have done to date: --
wiped Windows 7 box and reinstalled
Wiped user profiles both local and on PDC (including all user information)
Performed a complete uninstall of Samba (including TDB's) and
reinstalled a fresh copy of Samba and manually edited the smb.conf is a minimum basic PDC
I have no problems with Windows XP (SP3) box at any stage

My setup:
Ubuntu Karmic Server Edition 64 bit
Dell PowerEdge T610
4 internal NIC RJ45
1 add-on NIC Fibre 1 Gb
Samba 3.4.0
two shares intended for WIN clients
Connections: eth0 (the first internal NIC) is part of a private network of 4 servers connected to a Gb switch. this connections serves as a fast link among these servers to regularly transfer (backup) large quantities of data. Only I can utilise it from within the server room (among those servers, obviously).
eth0: 192.168.0.AA1 eth4 is the Intel add-on NIC with 1 GB fibre connections to the public network of our institution. This is the link/IP my WIN clints have to use to access their shares. eth4: 134.XXX.YYY.ZZ1
My Problem: Despite having including both interfaces in my smb.conf only the internal connection via eth0 lives up to my expectation and delivers up to 50 MB/s. All clients trying to connect via eth4 will be able to see and access the shares, but file transfers commence with speeds severely below 0,5 MB/s with lots of aborts and warnings from the WIN file explorer.
So I experimented with the setting "interfaces" in the global section of smb.conf --- to no avail. I even set samba only to eth4: same problem. Only way to get flawless & fast transfers is the way through eth0. The samba log files of the clients I tried do show some errors, but I fear I am unable to interpret them properly.
/etc/network/interfaces
Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface Intel Gb link via fibre

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as my Samba/LDAP PDC on my network. Unfortunately, I need to get a newer version of samba than the current repositories for 8.04 provide. I need the Samba 3.4.0 that has been updated for Ubuntu 8.10 to allow Windows 7 to join domain as outlined here (I am currently running 3.0.28a I think). Is there a way to set 8.04 to use the 9.10 repositories and use apt-get to install samba 3.4.0 from them?
