Ubuntu :: Dysfunctional Keyboard After User Log In - Studio 9.10 ISO Installed

Mar 18, 2010

Just finally got Ubuntu studio 9.10 ISO installed and i'm not able to use my keyboard after i log in to gnome. Well it let me log but why wont the keyboard log in with me? I very new with linux so i'm not sure where to start ,iv been searching google and found something about slow keys being activated ,i don't know if this feature could be the culprit or how to go about disabling it. I haven't tried to log in as a different user yet but will do to see if that works but it would be nice to know why this happens so i can prevent it.

OpenSUSE :: Setting Of New Login Screen For Kde Dysfunctional?

Aug 9, 2011

yesterday I met a colleague on the floor, who told me that after looking at the jailhouse theme of Suse 11.4 (I guess that'sa kind of curtain? it really is remarkably ugly) he switched to Ubuntu. So well, I won't go that far, but now I thought, let'sswitch the login-screen for something better.Okay, I go to System Settings / System Administration / Login Screen, tab Theme.Alright, there are six themes there, but I don't like them. Great, there is "Get New Theme"!Okay, I get one. But the list of themes doesn't change --- I would have expected, that the newtheme would now be automatically included. So well, a bit stupid, but apparently it wants youto explicitly include it: so I click "Install new theme" --- unfortunately, then there is no hintwhere the themes have been stored! Okay, I download another one, hoping that during thatprocess I will be told what happens. Alas, there was a chance for such enlightenment with KDE3.

but likely no longer with KDE4 (which seems to go the Windows route, hiding everything; with thelittle difference that under Windows the basic things actually work). So no hint where it stores theselogin themes. Okay, I search the Internet, find various possibilities, /usr, /etc, and ~/.kde, ~/.kde4, butin none of them can I find these themes! (I found the desktop themes, and I found the six themes which were already there, but not the new themes). So could somebody tell my where KDE hides the newly downloaded themes?

By the way, the information under "Help" seems either irrelevant or outdated (the directories mentionedseem false anyway). In general, I think most(!) KDE problems would be solved if KDE would be more "verbose", enlighten the userabout its actions (while on the other hand, at least KDE4 seems to have the goal of "never say anything").Thanks for your attentionFrustrated Oliver(Since September 2010 I try to become friends with KDE4, where I was really satisfied with KDE3.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Studio Lucid Directly To Studio Maverick?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.

[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Ubuntu :: VI & Keyboard Config On A Newly Installed Laptop?

I've just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, and when I'm on vim, I can use arrow key normally in command mode, but in editing mode, if I use them, it print a letter, capital case + new line and doesn't move the cursor.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Stopped Working For One User?

May 30, 2010

I'm running 10.04, typically using the default gnome session. I locked my screen overnight, and when I came back the keyboard wasn't working. Before anyone asks, yes it is still plugged in. Here's where it gets weird. I logged out using the mouse, and switched to another user on the system, and it works fine. I have keyboard input on the gdm log on screen and for other users. I've tried about every possible combination of logging on/off and rebooting and nothing seems to work. Is this an Xorg thing or a gnome thing? Any ideas what to do from here? I can still get to a terminal through another user and then "su" to my user so I can run "sudo" commands. So in other words, no need to bring in a live CD or a clean install at this point, but I don't really know where to start with this one.

UPDATE: I switched session types to LXDE, and the keyboard DOES work for my user. However, when going back to gnome it still doesn't work. I guess that seems to point towards it being a gnome thing, not Xorg.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Failure - But Only In One User Account?

Jan 11, 2011

This is the second machine of mine where the keyboard has quit once the machine is fully booted. However, this only happens in one user account, in both cases, the most-used account. The keyboard works fine in the other user accounts on both machines, and the keyboard works fine in all accounts when logging in. It is only when Kubuntu 8.04 is up an running that the problem occurs.

In the problem accounts, pressing and holding one of the keys does generate input, but it comes in pairs. I cannot type a single letter. It looks like the delay and repeat rates are messed up, but resetting them in the control panel does nothing. On one machine, I just installed a newer version of the OS. On the machine in question now, however, it is a business machine, and I don't want to have it down if I can 'save' it. I am guessing that this is a config issue somewhere in the innards of KDE 3.5. Can I safely delete a hidden directory somewhere, and force KDE to recreate a new set of config files?

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Not Working In One User Account?

Mar 28, 2011

One of my friends that I installed Ubuntu 10.04 for, is having a keyboard problem. On his account (admin) the PS2 keyboard works fine. On his wifes account (desktop user) the keyboard does not work. She can apparently use the keyboard until login is finished. A search here shows other people having keyboard problems, but no solutions. Should I try a USB mouse? Delete her account and add her back in a new one? Is there a fix someone here knows about?

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard Behaving Strangely Deb Installed On Macbook?

Mar 6, 2011

Yesterday I installed Debian 6 on my Macbook, with dualboot. Everything is working fine, except for the keyboard. As I'm typing, I see the mouse arrow moving a bit and strange things happen, such as text under the arrow being highlighted or clicked.

Other things as Right-Click, selecting text and other mouse-related events also happen. Pretty much all the mouse events are randomly fired while I'm typing on the keyboard.

It's being really hard to type like this. Anyone have any ideas of what might be the cause and how I can fix this?

OpenSUSE Install :: User Account Refuses Keyboard Input?

Dec 18, 2009

openSuse v11.1
Linux 2.6.27.39-0.2-default x86_64
VirtualBox v3.1.0

One user account completely ignores all keyboard input. No other account demonstrates this bizarre behavior. The faulty account has had occasional keyboard difficulty but it has always been related to the Virtual Machines (VirtualBox); the hosting account always functioned correctly.

Then the ban on keyboard input. Poof! "Keyboard? What keyboard? I don't see no stinking keyboard!"

It is not the physical keyboard. Three different hardware exhibit the same fault. It is not the motherboard; two mb's show the same fault. It is only that one account. And I even took the Windows route of re-installing the OS (what a waste of time that was).

If something changed, I am not aware of it (although something must have).

Ubuntu :: New User - Updates Installed - Hanging Boot

Dec 29, 2010

I've got 10.4.1(rev190?) installed in what I guess is Wubi and have been running dual boot for a couple of weeks now. My other OS is XP. I recently ran the updater then shut the computer down for a week. I can't remember now if I had to restart to complete any updates or not but my laptop battery is fried so once I unplugged it after it completed shutdown all power was removed from the system for 9 days. Today I tried to boot Ubuntu and after I chose it from the boot menu it flashed some sort of message about WUBILDR really quick (I wasn't able to read it all) then went through its normal boot until the Ubuntu splash screen where one dot went red and the system hung.

I allowed it a good 15 minutes to see if it would unhang but no dice. It boots fine on XP. Any advice? I'm reading the Wubi Megathread right now but as I'm new to Ubuntu I figured I'd check to see if anyone else experienced these particular problems here, too. Right now I'm going to download the Ubuntu installer to a disk to try some of the Megathread troubleshooting.

Ubuntu :: No Keyboard At Grub First Boot - Keyboard After Restart?

Jun 27, 2011

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).

When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.

Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)
