View 1 RepliesI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
I am running Fedora 8. Each time I run a YUM command, I get the message that there are unfinished transactions, and to run yum-complete-transaction. Upon running yum-complete-transaction, it fails with this error. How can I remove this uncompleted transaction so I can finish the last one?

I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).

View 3 Replies View Relatedwell I switched from windows several years ago and never looked back. I wanted to use fedora (and I did for a while) but ended up using ubuntu studio (actually ubuntu with selected studio components) and to be fair it has worked out well. the thing is I am looking to keep my server skills up to date and I know at this time redhat is king and fedora has most of the stuff I need to keep current (files in same places, yum/rmp vs apt-get) for that elusive linux job I am looking for. but I need a real time kernel, jack, ardour, hydrogen and other assorted open source packages because, well because that is my interest. so...
1) Are these packages available in fedora via yum (I don't want to maintain tar packages)
2) Is there a real time kernel as well from yum?
3) kvm/qemu virtual machines did not work with the rt kernel on ubuntu 9.04 but DID in fact work on ubuntu 9.10. Has anyone used the rt kernel and run kvm/qemu on fedora? cause if I cant have a few vm's (opensolaris, centos and xp to be exact) I cannot come back.
ubuntu is nice but after a year I still keep starting to type yum install vs apt-get so I guess fedora never really left me... oh I should mention my computer is 64 bit...
Their site said that the personal version is free; but after installing I found that it isn't really free. It's just a 30-day free trial.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu Studio on my old Acer Aspire 3003 and all is going well except that I can't get the wireless to switch on (it was working fine under XP). After searching the forums and with much help I have got the drivers installed for the Broadcom b43, but I still can't seem to get the wireless adapter to switch on. Many of the posts on this refer to System > Preferences > Network Connections, but I don't seem to have that option, just Network Tools and Network. Output of some commands that may help below.

Yesterday, while working in an html editor (Kompozer) and Firefox, the cursur stareted drifting to the top of the screen. It still responds to the mouse, but I am working against this pull and as soon as I stop moving the mouse, the cursor goes to the top again. It doesn't go left or right, just straight up. I had 8.01 on this before and never had nay issues like this. I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, but there is no trackpad on the keyboard.
I've tried shutting off the mouse power and rebooting with a regular wired mouse, and I get the same behavior. I don't have another keyboard right now, so I haven't tried disconnecting the wireless transceiver all together.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Ubuntu Studio straight from an iso file, didn't work. Unetbootin made a boot option but did not install (cannot find CD error) so I decided to use wubi and just install ubuntu then download the ubuntu studio packages when everything was done.
So Ubuntu is now on the machine (Dell Dimension 8250) and of course so is Windows XP Pro, and even after uninstalling Unetbootin the boot option for the install is still there. I guess I'd like to get ubuntu working properly with all the right drivers and have it as my main OS. No dual boot, just Ubuntu.
After installing Ubuntu in a partition of my HD, I cannot load Windows XP. It hangs in the logo page (the blue tracking keeps moving forever). When I try Safe Mode it hangs in the I have read many posts in this and in other forums, but could not solve the issue yet. I am posting here my Boot Info Script's results:
[Code]...
My Windows installation is in /dev/sda1, and my partition with all my files are in /dev/sda5. I am not sure if that is supposed to be that way, but in the "Drive/Partition Info" section it say sda1 starts at 63, while in the "Boot Info Summary" section it say that sda5 "starts at sector 63" too.
I don't know how to file a bug report properly. I can confirm that this Line6 adapter that I have causes Ubuntu 11.04 to go into a kernel panic during boot when it is plugged in. It happened right after I upgraded to 11.04 until I unplugged it, and still happens when it is plugged in during boot. If it's unplugged the system doesn't crash. I booted into 10.10 multiple times with this adapter connected and it never went into a panic.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
my network was a dream to set up under ubuntu 9.10. all i had to do was enter pass key, then that was it. Works brilliantly.
Different matter with studio. The thing I notice in network connections is, it doesn't want to retain my pass phrase, if I go back into properties the phrase is blank. As far as I can tell the wireless card has been reconcognized and is communicating with router.
My system is: asus p5ql-vm epu, intel core2 duo 2.8 e7400, 4gb 1067 ddr2 ram, belkin f5d7050 v4000, edimax router.

I very new with linux so i'm not sure where to start ,iv been searching google and found something about slow keys being activated ,i don't know if this feature could be the culprit or how to go about disabling it. I haven't tried to log in as a different user yet but will do to see if that works but it would be nice to know why this happens so i can prevent it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a total NOOB and I just finished a dual boot Ubunutu Studio 9.10 64bit/Windows 7 x64 install on a brand new i7 PC using a WD10EARS hard drive (with the new Advanced Format) and I gave myself top marks for getting by the mammoth amount of obstacles to accomplish what I have so far.
Item of note: you can NOT do a complete install with Ubuntu Studio 9.10 using a wireless device. The installer ONLY recognizes motherboard ethernet ports. No worries, I moved it to the office and the LAN line and got a complete install. I am using this in my living room though as a Media PC with MythTV and the distance requires me to use WIRELESS.
After a successful install, I was unable to get my brand new, out of box Netgear WG111v3 to establish a successful connection and I need your help. Pardon the length of this post, I will try to organize it as best as I can but I have done a LOT of troubleshooting before posting here. Here's what I did so far:
1. Tested Wireless in Win7 on same PC. Works GREAT! Rebooted, went into Ubuntu Studio 9.10 and got no joy.
2. This page says the WG111v3 works out of box with Karmic and I can state with 100% certainty it does NOT.
3. Went to this page (which is THE best how to out there) and followed instructions. I discovered a bug in wpa_passphrase immediately. I use a very complex passphrase using !#$&@ characters in the mix. wpa_passphrase dies with various errors when it sees these characters because it thinks they're command items rather than part of the text in my key. Try it yourself. Create any long text string with those characters and input it to wpa_passphrase. It dies. Works fine with regular letters/numbers. I had to use this page to get the HEX value for my passphrase so I could complete my interfaces file. On a hunch, I changed my passphrase on the router to be a simple 10 letter word all in lower case. wpa_passphrase changed that to HEX fine, updated interfaces file, rebooted router and PC and got nothing. So it's NOT the passphrase.
4. Went to this page, which again states it works out of box but doesn't and tried all the help there. NO JOY.
5. Tried here too. The help there is good when combined with #2 above but still nothing.
6. Went to unsupported versions of Ubuntu to try some old school tricks. Got nothing.
7. Found this site and it has EXACTLY my problem! I always end up with "No working leases in persistent database - sleeping." when it tries to get an IP address from the router. As you can see, that user found no fix either.
8. I turned off ALL security on the router and left it wide open, updated my interfaces file appropriately, rebooted everything and it still couldn't connect?
