General :: Installed Knoppix 6.2 / 6.4 On HD - User Password?

I have installed Knoppix 6.2/6.4, on the whole hard drive, when I want to change, e.g. my location from America to UK. I am being asked for a user password. On install there were no menus to put these passwords, unlike Ubuntu, which I am using at the moment, in and location etc. Once installed there is the Knoppix menu to add a root password, no problem, but when I put the root password in, on user password ,it wont accept this.

I am new to knoppix. I actually have never used it. I was under the impression that I could change or recover my password on Windows Vista. I only have one user and it is the administrator. I am not exactly sure why it is no longer working. It is on a laptop and I have let others use it at times. don't know if someone may have changed when it was open at work or something. Every time I boot up and my user account comes up. I put in my password and it looks like it will log on but then comes back and says wrong password. I did see a way to do it with Windows 2000, and XP. Will that also work with Vista?

I have a whitebox server with three network adapters, two gigabit adapters using the intel 82573V chips, and an intel pro/100 adapter based on the 82562 chip. These are embedded on an MSI motherboard. None are passing traffic.I initially booted the box using a Knoppix 5.0.1 CD, and the NICs worked fine. When I installed CentOS 5.4, no joy.Interestingly, Intel recommends the e1000e driver (which I am using), but the Knoppix CD used the e1000 driver. Anyway, I pulled an updated e1000e driver from elrepo,installed it, and verified that it was in use with 'ethtool --driver eth2', and the correct driver/version was displayed.
Symptoms are no traffic passes, rx/tx packet counts in ifconfig are both 0 (no errors, either). Routing table looks fine; three routes: one for 169.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x (my subnet), and one for 0.0.0.0, all destined for eth2, and all up. When I ping 127.0.0.1, and the local adapter address, I get good replies. As soon as I ping a remote host on my subnet, I get 'Destination host unreachable'. Now, at one point, I actually got it to work. I applied a small patch from Intel to change a value in the EEPROM, rebooted as instructed, and the adapter came up and passed traffic. I did a 'yum update' to update my packages, and shortly thereafter, everything stopped working again.

I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?

I am using mint 8 for a 2 weeks, I am noob to linux but I like Mint than any other linux distro which is great alternative to windows. I have a problem regarding password reseting.
1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?

Every time I try to run another script from my knoppix.sh file, it pops up and says permission denied. I've also tried running the scripts manually after stopping the knoppix.sh script yet it still gives the same error.

Yesterday I re-installed Musix over top of another installation of Musix using the keep files option.I did this because after it froze last night it would boot up properly.I got that problem fixed and I still have all of my files and settings but I am having one problem now:root has a password and I can't guess what it is.

A friend of mine can't remember her password for the computer.When the computer starts it automatically loads her user profile, i can't create any new users, and i cant become root with sudo, i looked around on the forums and some stuff was very helpful in teaching me more about linux, but without being able to change, or remove the password i cant update. the laptop is a dell 910 mini.
At the terminal, instead of being: User@localhost, it's : name@name

I have shared keys setup on my domain, so I never type my password to login anymore.
I've forgotten my password now. This is a problem because only my user can sudo. Password authentication for root has been disabled, so without my password, I cannot do maintenance on my web server.
Is there a way to reset my password as my [now only] key-authenticated user?
Specifically, can this be done on CentOS 4?

Ubuntu 8.10 does not ask for a password to login. I have only one user set up. I have set the user password from System > Administration > Users & Groups. Still does not ask for password > logs in straight away.

I've been trying to figure out how to set up vsftpd on a test machine to emulate the ftp setup on our current ftp server. I was able to track down part of what I needed with the gracious help of poster AlucardZero on this forum, who pointed out that the vsftpd process likely being run via xinetd.
I've managed (or so I thought) to set everything up correctly - but I cannot connect to my test box as the user the ftp client program we're using expects. I can see in the vsftpd log that I'm making contact, but the client program is automatically failing, and attempts to get in from the Windows command line (ftp <ip>) request user and password, then fail out with '530 Login incorrect'.
Everything I've seen online so far indicates that the ftp login for a local user (with vsftpd configuration settings including anonymous_enable=NO and local_enable=YES) should be the same as the 'normal' login for that user, and that the passwords should be the same as well. This is the case on the current FTP server, where a Windows command line login uses the same password as attempting to su into the user in question. On my test machine, I can su into the user in question with the password as well. I simply cannot seem to connect with this user via ftp.

Most of these eventually boiled back down to this howto page, and I've tried to follow the 'add and change user' instructions shown there to no avail.

I have installed a lot of CLI applications and it would be usefull if I had another one of these that lists and organizes ;in different ways ,what has been installed without a GUI. I tried this (rpm -qa | less) and it was lack luster and enormous. Is there a GUI or a CLI application that will list User installed CLI application and allows ways to list them , alphabetically or otherwise etc?

My bose ask me to convert a CentOS system password like "LMPQSMTE0nHlQ" to postfix MySQL MD5 Hased password, I find CentOS seems has 2 kinds of password form, one is shorter and the other is very long like"$1$C2MSk16n$WT5JWnzYH7XpCCjsiE2bd1", however I find postfix is exactly the later long one, so does any one know how to convert the short form to the later one

I am trying to change the password of a user by 'usermod' command. let us assume that there is a user named "test" to change the password of the user we can type "passwd test" which will change the password of the user "test". I want to change the password similarly using the command "usermod". when I give usermod -p yahoo test"(yahoo is the password which I want to set), I am not getting any errors but when I switch user to test, I am unable to login.
