View 3 RepliesI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
I would like to know if someone was able to upgrade/fresh install ubuntu 10.10 maverick on a dell studio hybrid. First I've tried to upgrade. Everything went well, until the system started. First thing to notice is that the orange was so bright that was almost impossible to look at the monitor. Not a big deal, adjusting some monitor brightness etc. Second the mouse (usb) stopped for some fraction of a second, or a second, when you click to open a program. It is annoying but it is also a problem that I could wait to find some solution.
Third and worse, it was completely impossible to see videos in vlc or other players, I've tried vlc, xine, etc, the videos was stuttered, choppy. SMPlayer was able to play them better. I've tried the solution here [URL] and it does not work at least for me. Fourth the fans went completely crazy, running as mainly when I have to use smplayer, I've found some complains about that [URL] but the solution does not apply to my computer.
Then I've tried a fresh install hoping that some of the troubles would not appear. The only trouble solved was the look and feel. Mouse the same trouble, stuttered, choppy videos on vlc, fans running all the time. And now it was impossible to install the wireless proprietary driver Broadcom sta. The only solution was to come back to Lucid. A fresh install of Lucid and mouse working ok, no troubles seeing videos in vlc, fans working absolutely normal and no troubles to install the wireless driver.
I am currently running Ubuntu studio 10.10 and I love it, but I added some of the stock ubuntu repositories for software sources. now my upgrade manager is asking me to update to ubuntu 11.4. I am tempted to but I dont know how safe it is.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just removed my previous linux install and installed Ubuntu Studio because of the nicer look. However the login screen is still the borin plain one. I have been to the "Login Screen" and tried to select theme as mentioned but it doesn't have any tabs or info for it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm a new to ubuntu / trying to install (build?) synfig studio in ubuntu 11.04. I've read the info from the download pages, have searched forums but nothing seems to apply to the year 2011 and ubuntu 11.04 OR my v. low level of expertise.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHas anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).
What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).
I have downloaded ubuntu studio 10.04 from torrent file available in ubuntu studio site.
1.Now I tried to install it directly from the iso as described here. It showed an error 'Can't mount the cd-rom' that is it couldn't mount the iso automatically.
2.Creating startup disk on my Seagate external hard disk (NTFS) didn't work out as 'Make startup disk' was greyed out.
3.Then I tried to install the OS from a pen drive. It proceeds fine until it hangs at 45% scanning disks in setting up the partitioner. I have waited for about 15 mins, but nothing happened.
I recently installed ubuntu studio 8.04 on a new partition and now ubuntu 9.10 is no longer showing up in the grub boot menu. How can I boot into ubuntu 9.10 and how do I edit the grub menu so it shows up again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a software developer, presently porting a game engine from Visual Studio to GCC. I'm working on LTS 10.04. The project uses C++ lambdas, and I really would like to keep it this way. Therefore, I need GCC >= 4.5 to compile it.
I wouldn't like to reinstall entire OS, or to have to manually update this single program every time. Is there an option to update it from 10.10 repositories, pointing out, that I need only this package (and it's dependencies)? Or is there any PPA that does the trick for me?
Generally, the entire packaging system of Ubuntu rocks, as long as I can find up-to-date PPAs of all packages I need to have in recent versions (like mono).
I deleted my Ubuntu Desktop Partition to replace it with Ubuntu Studio but when I went to restart the computer and command line thing about how the Ubuntu Partition is missing is showing up. How do I get it to boot to Windows?I'm currently booting from my emergency Xubuntu USB Stick.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been attempting to install 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Studio 1749 with the intention of making a dual-boot system. Attempting to install with a live CD using the default settings, I got as far as pressing ENTER on "Install Ubuntu" before the screen went completely black. The CD drive spun wildly, but nothing ever appeared on the screen. I tried the fix detailed here:
http://bennybeta.blogspot.com/2009/1...udio-1555.html
typing "nomodeset" as an option, and using the "apic=off" option. When I did this, I was no longer greeted with a blank black screen, but instead with a blinking cursor, but the installation still hung. The keyboard was unresponsive and I could not open a terminal. I also tried using the alternate installer instead, and got the same results.
After this, I tried installing using wubi, and on boot I get exactly the same results: black screen without "nomodeset" and a blinking cursor otherwise.
I should also mention that the same thing happens for every option on the installation screen, including the option to "try ubuntu" by booting from the CD.
Does anyone know what could be causing this issue, and how I might install ubuntu on my machine?
I'm currently trying to install ubuntu but the installation process hangs on the second page of the installation (right after select language) I am booting from a usb. NO other OS is installed and I'm currently in "try it now" mode.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu for a little while so i'm not a total newbie. But im not very confident with installing the latest verion of ubuntu studio. Previously i upgraded to ubuntu studio through the terminal window from Jaunty. This time i want to do a fresh install via a DVD. I tried earlier but the part im confused about is the partitioning and formatting process. I have 2 hardrives. One of my hard drives has my XP OS on it along with my entire life. So I cant afford to make a mistake. The other has an older 32bit version of ubuntu studio on it.
I have looked online but I havent found much help. What i was thinking of is just unplugging my windows drive, doing a fresh install on the other. But then i wouldnt know what to expect when i boot up and plug in the XP drive.
When I try to install Apache Directory Studio through eclipse 3.3.The procedure I follow: Go to help (Eclipse Interface)----> Software Updates ----> Find and Install When I press Find and Install nothing happens and eclipse becomes unresponsive.

While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.
