View 2 RepliesI mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDownloaded and played latest Ubuntu (10.10) to get an idea of how it works (without actually installing it). Currently i use windows 7. When I restarted my computer all my desktop icons had disappeared. I still have the programs in my documents file or wherever but my desktop is clear. Is there any way i can restore them without doing it one by one? i.e. get back to my previous state.

Is Gnome or KDE a way to set up desktop icons for your computer?

I already tried gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> desktopCheked the box beside computer_icon_visible, home_icon_visible, and trash_icon_visible. I already tried it in Ubuntu 10.04 without success.

Choosing Main Menu>Places>Downloads, for instance, generates a little disk activity, but never displays a window with the contents of the Downloads directory. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a new notebook, an ASUS K501UX, and I have encountered some problems installing Debian 8.3 on it.
In fact, already during the installation process it looks like there are some problems with the video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M), since the lower part of the screen is just black (even if it still "exists", that is the mouse can go "behind" it and click the "next" or "cancel" buttons which are "covered" by the black stripe): [URL] ....
This problem persists also after the installation. Furthermore, since the screen has a 4k resolution (3640x2160) all icons, windows and texts are painfully small: [URL] ....
As you can see, however, if I take a screenshot all the desktop is visualized. This is what the screen actually looks like in the lower part: [URL] ....
I tried changing the resolution from the Settings, but apart from 3640x2160 no other options are available. Furthermore, the display is labelled as "Unknown display": [URL] ....
I then tried to change it with xrandr, but the output of xrandr command is the following:
Code: Select allxrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 2160, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 3840 x 2160
default connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 0mm x 0mm
3840x2160 0.00*
I then looked around the web, and found that this is a problem related to the video card driver. So, I followed the DebianWiki on the subject to install the driver, namely I installed the nvidia-driver package and then configured xorg with nvidia-xconfig. However, rebooting Debian, all I got is a blank screen with a flashing pointer, and xserver not working at all (if I press Alt+F3 and login and then try startx I get a long list of deadly-sounding errors like "screen not found").
What should I do? Should I try installing the drivers from the NVIDIA website? I've read (also in the DebianWiki) that this can cause problems to the system. Or is it really a driver problem? Why doesn't it detect the screen?
I can't seem to find a way to do that.

Finally got the network set up, but can't access the internet on the Ubuntu comp. Also, the Ubuntu machine can recognize and access the files on the netbook, but the netbook only sees a computer named Owner-a6012abd6 which asks for a password.
The netbook is running Windows XP SP3, with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter(internet) and an Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. The Ubuntu comp is running Ubuntu 9.04.

I understand that Samba is the way to go, but how do I configure linux with Samba so I can share files and printers? I am able to see my windows computers (vista and xp) but I am not able to see the linux computer with those machines plus I would like to change the network name of the linux machine if possible. Please any help and information will be much appreciated. Eventually I would like to server a printer from this linux machine to the other windows machines.

I wish to write a python code so that I can access a file on a windows computer on the network. cannot connect to my window computer using open SuSe
I am attempting to connect to my Windows Computer via a wired network on a sky router. When I tried with PClinuxOS it configured automatically. With the latest version of open SuSe 13.1this is quite a bit different. I have got as far as the network being auto and active with an Icon showing on the taskbar. However when I click on the Windows network Icon SuSe tyies to locate my Computer but then comes back with " failed to reteive share list from server. This is as far as I can get after several hours of trying.
Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

I am currently trying to figure out what's the best way to backup several PCs (about 5 computers each with Windows 7) from my family.
As I want the same solution for all Computer - I set up my old computer (Windows 7) and added some hard drives and there should now be enough space to backup the data of everyone from my family via the network. (Lets call this computer "Server")
But now I am wondering whats the best way to do this? What I do not want:
I do not want to start the Server each time manually when a computer tries to backup. (I thought about using WakeOnLan.. but I do not know if this is a good idea) I do not want the Server to run permanently I do not want to make the backups manually they should backup about every week automatically.
So which Software on the Computers / or the "Server" would you recommend?
Or would you eve recommend me to use Linux on the Server? If so, which Software would you use then?
EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

View 1 Replies View RelatedSometimes when adding an application link to the Unity dock it does not display an icon in the dock, just a blank space.
An example would be the image manipulation app 'Pinta'. Installing this from the Ubuntu Software Centre, finding it in the apps menu and dragging it to the Unity dock results in a blank space being put in the dock.
I am happy to report a bug but can anyone explain why this happens?
Temporary work around for anyone with this problem:
1. Create a launcher for the app on the desktop
2. Move the launcher to ~/.local/share/applications
3. Drag it to the dock from there
I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
