General :: Make Display Switchable Between Two Windows?
Aug 29, 2011I must display two different windows (different application) on a single X display/screen., with a small sticky window that display buttons to switch from one (virtual) screen to the other.
Although I thought this would be an easy task for a simple window manager like fvwm, I didn't get it to work.
I've tried fvwm in combination with the FvwmPager, but I keep getting problems to place the different windows in the different virtual desk or page (automatically).
e.g. if you do: xterm -title "Hello" and xterm -title "There", I want Hello to go to virtual screen 1 and There to go to virtual screen 2.
I've also tried using metacity and switching between workspaces.
Is there an example configuration available? I'm not fixed on a specific window manager.

Nov 22, 2010I'm pretty much as new as they get to Linux, just installed it yesterday for the first time and I'm still trying to get used to it. One thing I noticed that's been bothering me is that when I get an IM, instead of the window flashing on my taskbar, the text in the title just gets bolded so I never seem to notice it. Is there any wayould change the notification for those kinds of things to something a bit more noticeable?

Aug 4, 2010Normally when a program is open an entry is placed on the taskbar in order to easily find it, which is useful when a lot of programs are open. In Ubuntu 10.04, when I moved a program to the other monitor (I'm using 2 monitors) the taskbar entry also moves to the taskbar on that monitor.
Now I switched over to Ultimate Edition, which is Ubuntu 10.04 with a lot of stuff added to it. When I drag a program to the other monitor, the entry in the taskbar disappears, but it does not reappear in the taskbar of the other monitor. So now the only way for me to find a program on this monitor if its hidden behind other windows is to use alt-tab.

May 12, 2011So this morning I just upgraded my laptop from OpenSuSE 11.2 to 11.4. I am using the Gnome Desktop (2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux).
As of right now the "Taskbar" at the bottom of the desktop, does NOT stretch all the way across the bottom (meaning it would start on bottom-left edge and go to the bottom-right edge) of the screen. Right now it is sort of centered at the bottom, and its size changes depending on how many windows are open.
So is there any way to set it to a fixed width (by that I mean I want it to take up the entire bottom of the screen x-amount of pixels high, etc..

Jan 5, 2010Starting up xubuntu 9.10 on my dual booted inspiron 1501 (vista) and the desktop pops up, but there's no taskbar or anything just the desktop. All this after fixing my grub [URL]. I popped up a terminal and installed tree to show me the filesystem. All my files are still there I then ran synaptic and tried to see if any packages were missing but I don't know much so now I'm stuck with another problem.

I red that Kicker is replaced by some Plasma feature. Could it be because of Conky (some desktop layouts)? I tried to prevent it, but I can't. I killed all Conky instances, and removed it from .kde/Autostart, but it still runs on every start-up.

Jan 26, 2010I'm using ubuntu (and compiz, though I'm not sure it's relevant) and I've been wondering something : how to display the desktop, as you would in windows using windows key+D ? In system-> preferences-> keyboard shortcuts there's an action called "hide all normal windows and set focus to the desktop". What does "normal windows" mean ?
When I press this shortcut (which seems to have the same effect as if you press the bottom left corner), the desktop is displayed, but there are some small squares in the corners that seem to be pieces of windows. What are these exactly, and if they're not useful, how can I make them disappear? Plus, if I press this shortcut twice, all windows disappear from the bottom panel (I don't know the proper name).

Aug 1, 2011The first issue is adding launch icons to the task bar. I can add launchers, but cannot figure out how to link them to applications. It is only half a problem, because putting links on the desktop is easy, but I prefer having launchers on the task bar so the desktop is not cluttered.The big problem is placement of desktop icons. I like to put icons on the right side of the screen, and more importantly, I like to group related icons. For example, if I had a folder or document for Linux and another for Debian, I want them grouped together. I also like arranging by category: folders in one column, documents and images in another and launchers (if any) in a third. However, if there is way to enable desktop icons to be moved, I cannot figure it out. Icons are fixed on the left side of the screen with folders first in alphabetical order, then documents/images in alphabetical or numerical order, and launch icons last.My guess is icons can be moved, but I am not computer literate enough to figure it out. It does not make sense that the task bar can be placed on the top, bottom, left or right, but desktop icons cannot be moved. I have tried every preference setting, but there are no relevant options.Am I over-looking something that is not obvious or is it a strange deficiency with LXDE?

It's maddening to click thinking you'll pull up the terminal that's hiding beneath the browser and be whisked away to a different desktop.I'm running KDE 4.4.3 and FC13. I know there's got to be a simple option to have the taskbar only show what's there...I've changed it before in other distros and just can't seem to find a clear, obvious option for that this time around.
