Ubuntu :: Make Desktop Icons Snap In Grid Like In Windows?
Feb 1, 2011I can't seem to find a way to do that.
View 9 RepliesI can't seem to find a way to do that.
View 9 RepliesI've read and seen cases were Ubuntu 11.04 users can snap their windows to the left or right by default (such that said window fills half the screen). I, however, cannot do this. Is there something I need to enable.
View 4 Replies View Related1) How do I align my desktop icons to a grid?
2) Is it possible to move the close, maximize, and minimize buttons to the left side of the window? I prefer that to the since I'm used to GNOME Unity.
Not sure if this is the right sub-forum, but it seems close enough. As stated in the title, how does one go about this? I know Fedora supports this, and was wondering if there was a way to configure it in OpenSuse. I haven't found anything in the Control Center about this, or on the internet for that matter.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to snap windows in GNOME (more specifically, under Ubuntu) to user pre-defined grids.
I have tried the "Snapping Windows" and "Grid" plugins for Compiz, and have also seen demos of PyWO, but none of these tools seem to provide the above option.
with 11.2 and now with 11.3 (using KDE4) i got two issues with emacs:
1) The emacs window doesn't properly snap to other windows. There is mostly a small gap inbetween.
2) When switching between buffers with C-x b the emacs window shrinks vertically from below!
I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).
Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.
Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?
i would like to disable the aero snap function when using the mouse to drag a window to screen edges... i like to keep multiple small windows with various sizes at the edges of the screen (i.e. with media players listening to music or watching videos to have the screen in one corner while using the remainder of the screen for something else)
i would still like to keep this function with hotkeys (<super> + up/down/left/right) is there any way to work around this?
In Ubuntu 810.. how do you set the mouse for one click to open an item..?What is that software that sets Trash's empty feature at the bottom of the right click on trash..? I had it, but I can't find it for this new install. Is there a way to default the cursor to half its minimum size, and customize its color to blues..?Is there a way to force the desktop toolbar icons to half of their minimum default size..Is thee a way to change the "Ubuntu Icon + Applications/Place/System" to just three different colored tiny spheres, without the Ubuntu icon..?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu 11.04 as a dual boot with XP Pro on dell d830 laptop. Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed. Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe screen at 1920x1080 with tiny gnome icon. Almost unreadable, can the icons be bigger? KDE has excellent icons but for some mystery the system cannot run KDE. All gnome, not just ubuntu, have 10.4 now runs excellent need to keep it.

I have been looking at Ubuntu for a couple years and finally decided to give it a try on an old Dell laptop 1150.Managed to get it loaded on and it all came up, did the updates. But the desktop will not respond. When the mouse arrow passes over on the left side icons it will sometimes change the color of them but still won't do anything.I did a quick search but did not see anything relatedam an absolute rookie with this Linux thing. Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have taken delivery of a PsiXpda, which is a hand-held PC. It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme. As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.
