Went into the Power Management Preferences to make sure that "Dim display when idle" was unchecked, and it is, both for "On AC Power" and "On Battery Power". It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.

When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming.
This is the output of my xrandr for each of my monitors (I get a different xrandr depending on which X session (i.e. monitor) I try xrandr on):
Primary Monitor

I could not figure out from the above outputs what I should be using for the --output flag. I assumed it was default and tried the following:
~ $ xrandr --output default --off
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
But as you can see, it didn't work. Additionally, since all three xrandr outputs list the monitor as default, I wouldn't know how to turn my other monitors back on afterwards (if the command did work). Do you know what might be wrong in my nvidia-settings or what else I could try?
i've configured the machine to use a static ip yet dhclient still runs and obtains an ip. what needs to be done to stop this? it has to be something i can put in a script since i have written a setup script to run on several machines. this setup script creates/modifies several files with a few key ones shown below:

sudo shutdown -h <time> or sudo reboot from the terminal I get a rather annoying beep sound. What's even more annoying is if I use the shutdown command to specify a time I get a beep every 10 minutes or so.
I've tried disabling the terminal beep in the terminal profile, disabling the beep in System/Preferences/Sound, adding "blacklist pcspkr" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, and running gconf-editor from the terminal and setting /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode to 'off' rather than 'on'.

The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.

The only way to "wake it up", is to use a local keypress (which means I have to hook a keyboard back up to it). I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick I can't seem to disable screen lock after resume from suspend. It's a minor annoyance, but still a considerable annoyance to have to enter my password every time the computer wakes up.
I've thusfar
1 - changed screensaver preferences to not lock
2 - set the gnome_keyring_hibernate, gnome_keyring_suspend, hibernate, and suspend, values all to false in gconf-editor
3 - commented out the line LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support
BUT am still being prompted for a password every time the computer wakes up from suspend. I'm stumped, what could I be forgetting?
Anyone else have this problem? I've checked the "Disable screen saver while playing movies" checkbox, but my screen still fades to blank after 10 minutes.This doesn't happen in VLC, but VLC is giving another whole problem[URL]
