I am having an issue with my ubuntu server where it keeps dimming the screen i am using no GUI and i am wondering what the command or the file location that needs to be edited to stop this from happening.

However I'm still looking for a method that can automatically disable screen fade while watching videos in a browser. I don't want to permanently disable the powersaving idle method. I have both cpufreqd and laptop-mode-tools to conserve my powers.

View 3 Replies View RelatedInstalled 10.04 on a Dell Latitude D610. Found that the screen would start dimming after a few seconds of the computer being idle. Went into the Power Management Preferences to make sure that "Dim display when idle" was unchecked, and it is, both for "On AC Power" and "On Battery Power". Can't seem to figure out how to stop my brightness from dimming. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and any further information you need I will gladly provide.

It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. Out of interest does anybody know what memory and cpu overhead these effect costs and how many lines of code? More to the point does anybody know who needs them?
When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.
I'd like to have my VNC sessions to a server use a separate display from the physical screen. So that e.g. I could have the physical screen locked in screensaver while the VNC display is unlocked.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe title pretty much says it all. Once I get past GRUB, the font becomes HUGE and starts off screen. It appears to be center zoomed because I cannot see the login prompt nor anything I type. It's not really an emergency, I installed OpenSSH during the OS installation and can just turn it on and log in over SSH or start up Webmin. It just bugs me that I cannot figure this out.
There is no graphical environment installed, so it's not a video card issue. I tried adding vga=ask as a kernel flag and then tried several options, but to no avail.
I am trying to install either Ubuntu or CentOS server in text mode only. The problem I am having is that the hardware that I am trying to install it on has no vga output, I can only connect to it via console cable. I am able to boot from USB CDROm or flash drive but unfortunately since the hardware does not have a gpu (atleast none that I'm aware of) I am unable to get past the boot screen. If someone can point me in the right direction or know where I would be able to download the text install of either OS, that would be awesome.

My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.
It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

I use vnc to log into my Ubuntu desktop at work from home, is there a way to blank-out or lock the terminal screen while I am connected remotely, just like in windows remote login? I don't seem to find the option in vncserver to allow for that.Also, I am aware of the workaround of starting a new X session, but I can not do that because I can not waste any processing resources.

Months later those pixels grew to a long vertical stripe down the right side of my screen. I'm constantly having to move pallets out of the way so I can see what I'm doing.
Is there a way to change the geometry of the X server to be something like 1800x1080 instead of 1920x1080?

I've got a new installation of 11.04 server. Everything was apparently working just fine, and then the system hung. I rebooted, and everything looked good up to the login screen. After I typed my password, the screen started looking good, and then got all fuzzy and messed up (nothing was readable). The only way I could get anything back was to reboot. (I am able to work via ssh at the command line, though). As the graphics were fine before (using GDM), and since the GUI looks fine at the login screen, I know the system can do it.
I tried to find information on what might be going wrong, and haven't been able to find anything that fixes the issues. I thought there might besomething in my config, so I tried logging into another account on the system that doesn't have any user-level configuration, and got the same result (the machine's main purpose is to be a mail and file server). So it appears to me that something is happening to the graphics configuration after login when GDM loads. What I need to change?
I have upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.4 on my Dell Inspiron Desktop and OKI TV monitor. After reboot the new version I can read the menu.lst on the screen and i select ubuntu 10.4 but after the screen is black permanently and the boot process stop. I have tried with a acer monitor and all is OK, but i would like use the OKI monitor. With the OKI monitor I have not problems with old versions of Ubuntu, neither Ubuntu CD Live, neither Knoppix. I have see that there is not /etc/X11/xorg.conf so I have tried with differents xorg.conf files:
a) with dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xerver-xorg
b) copying xorg.conf from Ubuntu 8.10 Live LoW Graphics mode
c) copying xorg.conf from Knoppix Live
but the result is the same : black screen I have tried also Xorg -configure but it say a warning message: "Server is running" I think that start up script dont read xorg.conf and the boot process is blocked
I've installed 10.04 Server on a desktop three times. The install goes well and after the installation, the server reboots and I can login with no problems. I can also look around the file system and run some of the utilities. My network can also see the server. The problem comes when I restart the server for the first time after the installation restart. The system starts to come up and then the screen goes blank. The computer is still running but there is no video signal to the monitor; and the network cannot see the system. I believe this has something to do with the master boot record but I'm not sure.

I booted it up and get to the ubuntu install menu, were my first choice is "English" as language. Then I get to an installation menu were I proceed to "Install Ubuntu Server", but when doing so the screen just go blank and nothing happens. I've searched around for a solution but can't seem to find one.(Note: I've installed Ubuntu Server on other computers without facing this issue, so I don't know what went wrong this time.)

I have Ubuntu on a DVD and have tried both my DVD drives, AND an external DVD drive and have no luck. I have tried different versions of Ubuntu and get the same problem. So I boot it fine and it gets the the Ubuntu splash screen and I select "Install Ubuntu" it loads for a few seconds then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. It sits here forever. I tested on my friends computer with very similar processor and it blinks for about 3 seconds then an Ubuntu splash screen appears with dots under it and it loads and works fine.
So I am 100% positive the DVD is fine and should work for my processor also. I do have Windows 7 currently installed. And I made a 100 GB partition via Windows 7 using Easeus Partition Manager. If it matters, I did test Ubuntu on my computer by installing it from VirtualBox and it worked fine...but I'd rather do a dualboot because I don't like running an OS in another OS and its performance isn't so great when emulating an Operating System...
But when i try the Ubuntu Server Edition, using the same method of burning the iso file i downloaded from ubuntu homepage into a cd, and when i reboot my pc and the screen display the following:ISOLINUX 3.63 Debian 2008-07-15 Copyright (c) 1944-2008 H. Peter Anvin

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have x11vnc server set up on my desktop PC. I can boot the computer and connect at the login screen if I want to. I can login to my computer as usual. But after about 1 minute of logging in, the computer logs off as if pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and returns me to the login screen. This cycle repeats when I login and I have to kill the x11vnc process or remove the command from /etc/gdm/Init/Default.Have tried so many things now but the end result is the same. I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully updated and x11vnc 9.10-1 from the default repos. I am using the following command in the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file:

I don't think it matters now whether I add KillInitClients=false into /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom or /etc/gdm/gdm.conf because of the x11vnc version I have. The manual says its not really needed. But I have tried this too with no better luck.The computer will still log me out after about a minute of logging in. It can be between 1 min to 1.5 mins.Running out of ideas and have tried the -noxfixes and -reopen commands.
Why does x11vnc crash out (or it may be gdm or x server?) after about a minute of logging in? If I am currently viewing my desktop through VNC viewer on another computer, it will still crash out after 1 min of log in, and lose the connection. I can reconnect through VNC again but I have to log back in to the remote computer and it will just log out after another minute.At last, in 2 days I have finally solved it. As simple as creating my own version. The x11vnc 9.10-1 version my default Ubuntu 10.10 repos is buggy. Here's my fix (I used this site):
1. Downloaded latest x11vnc dev build from above site (x11vnc-0.9.13-dev.tar.gz at time of posting)
2. Extract it
3. Open Terminal > sudo -s > enter admin password
4. cd LocationOfExtracted folder

Try to load my system today and nothing come up, only the terminal window. Whatever I type in is working, like now I type in the terminal firefox and it is how I ended up here. Try to type thunderbird in the terminal and my mail server started no problem. But nothing on my screen, don't no where to go from here.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.
