I have a question here. Prologue: When I open Synaptic Package Manager via Gnome Menu, password-request screen appear, screen dimmed, and I'm unable to react with another windows.
Can I have this effect to another applications, I meant that when I open the application, screen dimmed and I'm unable to react with another windows.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I have the window manager configured for "focus follows mouse" but new application windows will steal the focus. Seems like there are many threads out there complaining about this behavior, but I see no solutions, am I missing something?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have found a couple of posts complaining about this problem but none offering solutions. In a nutshell, I want to prevent ALL programs from creating new windows that steal the keyboard focus away from whatever window I was just using. The most common offender is Synaptic when running updates/installs. I will be typing an email, playing a game, whatever, and all of a sudden a new window will pop up, steal focus, and if I'm not paying enough attention, whatever I'm typing will interact with it and cancel something or say yes to something before I even realize it. Another really bad offender is Firefox with the dialogs to accept cookies or entering/leaving a secure website. I still want all of those dialog boxes to appear but I don't want them to automatically steal focus from my other applications. Another user suggested having them blink in the task bar and I like that well enough if it is possible.
Is there a way to lock the focus to the active program/window unless the end user switches it away (i.e. no stealing)?
One post said something about window rules but gave no details. A lot of posts talk about the mouse cursor position selecting the window option (which I do not want and would not fix this problem anyway). One post said it was fixed in Feisty (guess it came back...)
Is it possible to configure OpenOffice.org or start it with command line options so it does not steal focus?
I don't want to use the window manager to stop all applications stealing focus because mostly they start quickly and I've started them because I want to use them. What makes OOo different is it takes so long from starting it to it displaying a document window that I do other work while waiting and then the OOo document widow pops up and takes keystrokes intended for the other window as input for itself.
I'm just wondering if there is a way to keep the flash plugin from stealing the keyboard focus. This way firefox's shortcuts can be used regardless of what type of content is in the window.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm hit with a very annoying bug: mouse clicks do not give focus anymore, focus stays trapped and sometimes right clicking the element that last had focus allows the next left click to move focus. I'm running wheezy with kde. Searching the web it I found no solution but it seems my problem is close to what is reported there:e issue: after alt+tab the window decoration changes as if the focus had moved to the new window but it stays trapped in the previous window. Rebooting does not fix the issue.I have nvidia graphics set up with dual screen through the nvidia drivers but this setup has been working good for several months, so I don't think it's related.

After browsing the internet with Firefox, there appears a peculiar problem: if I move the pointer to a certain area of the screen, I can't click (left, right, middle) nor use mouse wheel. The area can be of variable size, but usually it's small, in the lower part of the screen, it's x dimension greater than y one (a horizontally placed rectangle). The problem doesn't go away when I restart Firefox (obviously it does when I reboot). It obstructs any window under it (I can't even click on the desktop where 'it' is). It's as if there is an invisible window that 'steals' focus when I move the mouse over it. I'm on 11.04, Classic Ubuntu (Gnome 2.3x).
A quick UPDATE: dragging an icon and dropping it on the said area behaves as if I dragged an item and dropped it where it doesn't belong (i.e. it just slowly returns to it's original position). Also, I tried killing it with Force Quit applet, but only my desktop reloaded.
i would like to disable the aero snap function when using the mouse to drag a window to screen edges... i like to keep multiple small windows with various sizes at the edges of the screen (i.e. with media players listening to music or watching videos to have the screen in one corner while using the remainder of the screen for something else)
i would still like to keep this function with hotkeys (<super> + up/down/left/right) is there any way to work around this?
Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

I am using gpg keys with passphrases set to connect to different jabber accounts. When I restore from hibernate I am prompted by two pinentry dialogs for these passphrases. But very often one of these dialogs that is not in focus steals keyboard input from the other dialog. Even worse, they steal keyboard input from fluxbox and other applications and I am unable to do anything until I enter it or click cancel if I do not want to input password right now. How can I forbid pinentry to steal keyboard input and to get it only if it is in focus? I am using pinentry-0.8.0 on Gentoo amd64 with USE="ncurses qt4" (/usr/bin/pinentry is a symlink pointing to pinentry-qt4).UPDATE:After some research, I found that pinentry accepts --no-global-grab option, which, according to the info page, should be used only by developers. Still unsure how to make it default: having#!/bin/zshexec /usr/bin/pinentry-qt4 --no-global-grab $@in place of /usr/bin/pinentry symlink does not work (this script is launched, but option is ignored), if I place it into /usr/local/bin it is not launched at all though I have /usr/local/bin in $PATH before /usr/bin.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.

The function keys don't work before log-in.. Well not for sound at least.. I guess you could say it's a bug.. unless it was intended. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have my headless server, and just plugged a spare monitor into it, opened up screen, ran htop on it, so I can see the system status, but the screen keeps shutting off after so long. The only way to "wake it up", is to use a local keypress (which means I have to hook a keyboard back up to it). I have already tried 'setterm -powersave off -powerdown 0', but it didn't affect it any. Is there any way to disable this powersaving mode?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick I can't seem to disable screen lock after resume from suspend. It's a minor annoyance, but still a considerable annoyance to have to enter my password every time the computer wakes up.
I've thusfar
1 - changed screensaver preferences to not lock
2 - set the gnome_keyring_hibernate, gnome_keyring_suspend, hibernate, and suspend, values all to false in gconf-editor
3 - commented out the line LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support
BUT am still being prompted for a password every time the computer wakes up from suspend. I'm stumped, what could I be forgetting?
Anyone else have this problem? I've checked the "Disable screen saver while playing movies" checkbox, but my screen still fades to blank after 10 minutes.This doesn't happen in VLC, but VLC is giving another whole problem[URL]

The login screen shows both the users apache and server. My concern is that if sombody has the password to the username apache, hecan login.
