Software :: Disable Screen-saver ?
May 17, 2010
I am using "Puredyne" distro, that is Ubuntu. After some time I've been not typing any key the screen-saver starts, but it is malfunctioning because it gradually blanks the screen and does not allow me to take control of the system again. So I ask you how to disable this screen-saver or enable another one that works.

I have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.

I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway, sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later. Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?

I have set the Space Saver as my keyboard layout in the KDE control center*, but Shift+NumLock/ScrollLock still does not work as it should to disable NumLock. I have tried both ibm_space_saver and ibm_spacesaver (isn't this practically a duplicate entry?) and restarted after each, to no avail.
Also, a second, possibly related problem -- why, at the login screen, does it take so long for my keyboard and mouse to start working? Maybe ten seconds after the login prompt seems to be ready -- only then can I actually do anything.
* I think this should be in Keyboard & Mouse instead of Regional & Language, but I can understand why it's there.

I have recently installed 11.04 natty on Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHZ using its own graphic accelerator. When the screen is idle for a long time, more than 1 hour, I get a black screen with the mouse arrow but nothing else. the mouse moves the cursor and Ctl+Alt+F1 does work. How to fix this problem?

I've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).
Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.
The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!
I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.

What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.

Running 10.04 on Asus 1005 HA netbook. When AC power is plugged in the screensaver appears after the time specified. However, on battery power the screen goes blank.I have read a number of threads on this topic and have made changes to power management settings (On Battery Power mirroring On Mains Power)and Compiz Settings|General|Unredirect Fullscreen Windows enabled, with no success. This also occurred when running 9.10. Not sure if it is a bug or incorrect settings.

I have no GNOME Panels on my desktop. I stopped gnome-panel from booting altogether by going into the configuration editoring to "/desktop/gnome/session/required_components" changing the panel key to "gnome-panel(Orig)" so that the command just errors out. Then adding a key in that same path the key is a string "avant-window-navigator". Since I've done this the screensaver doesn't come up. Also pidgin never goes idle. Both are set to hit at thirty minutes but have not hit in almost a day. I thought the mouse might be moving slowly or something butunplugged it and let it sit for almost an hour and nothing. Also at that time I had a VirtualBox with Windows XP in it and that screensaver hit no problem

I am using ubuntu 10.04. Over the last couple of days, I am having a weird problem: once the machine gets into screen saver, it is impossible to get it "out".
I see the mouse cursor move as I move it, but the login popup (with user / password) does not show up.
For the time being, I have no choice but to restart the computer in order to be able to resume work.

Windows has it, so should Linux: A Transparent Screensaver. It sounds like an oxymoron, but it's a truly useful concept. An example would be a NOC environment where there is a need to display content on overhead screens. To display the content, they have to be logged in to have access to certain resources such as web browsers, or client applications to display the data.
It is insecure to leave these machines logged in, even in a controlled environment. What is needed is a transparent screensaver that can lock the terminal to prevent unauthorized use, but still display the entire screen. The screensaver would display a dialog box to enter the user credentials upon mouse movement or keyboard activity. If no credentials were presented, the dialog would disappear.

I downloaded and did a fresh install of 64bit 10.10 RC a couple of days ago.I've run the Update Manager and everything is up to date. The sceen saver doesn't work. After the set idle time, the screen remains at the desktop and never goes blank. I set it at System / Preferences / Screen saverI have Regard the computer as idle after: 4 minutes
I've checked Activate screensaver when computer is idle.I've checked Lock screen when screensaver is active. I have it set to just do a blank screen.I have a 10.04 machine and a 9.somethingorother machine and the screensaver works normally on both of those.

I did a fresh install of 11.04 a week ago and I had my screen saver set to run 'Floating Feet' after 15 minutes idle time. Twice I've left my computer, and returned, clicked the mouse, and found my computer frozen on the screen saver. I was able to recover once by hitting the power button, which brought up the shut down/restart options and normal desktop. It hasn't happened since I turned off the screen saver, so I'll just leave it that way until a solution arises.

I am using Mepis 8 and ever since the upgrade I have noticed that the screen saver takes over the screen even if a programme is running. This happens even whether the programme is in a window or the full screen.
Now I am quite sure this did not happen before the OS upgrade when it was underneath the running programme. At the moment the only solution I have is to active the screen saver at something like 120 minutes!
Incidentally I also notice that you cannot not have a screen saver. The minimum is a blank screen.
Do anyone know if it is possible to make the screen saver run in the background? Of course this may be a KDE problem.
