In my login screen settings, I accidentally swithed from GNOME to the recovery terminal. I can boot to x fine in recovery mode, but I can't change the screen settings from here.
How do I change it back to GNOME?
Does anyone knows how to do this for all users with one command?Or which file i have to edit to do this?

When I went back to a Gnome session, however, it appears that Thunar is now the default filesystem explorer.I get the Thunar explorer. I want the Nautilus explorer. How do I fix this issue?
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I right click on my CD/DVD with my DVD+RW popped in the drive, it freezes for like 10 minutes and then it unfreezes with nothing happening.I think I formatted it before using ImgBurn but when I did it went from 4.7GB capacity to 3GB. Is it possible that I accidentally turned my double-layered DVD to single-layer? If so is there a way to turn it back to double-layer?

There are about 60 users so far.On my server, LXDE is default for everyone.But on the clients, each user has to change to LXDE individually. I installed lxde and logged out and switched to it, but my internet wasn't working (but that's a different thread after I fix this, I was going to try installing wicd) So I tried to go back to gnome, I misclicked and accidentally started a different session. I think it said openbox/gnome, all I get is a blank screen with just the desktop background. It's set to automatically log me in, so when I restart my computer it goes back to the blank screen. How do I get back to the login screen?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have had ubuntu for several months now and my wireless has worked just fine, but all of a sudden it just turned off. In the drop down menu in the top right corner for wirless it has a check mark beside "enable networking" but the button "enable wireless" is greyed out and I cant click it. I have checked that the wireless is working and it is (confirmed with another laptop).

Notice how it's more square. System->Preferences->Appearances doesn't seem to help.
This is the difference in the output of a port scan using Zenmap on the same system with UFW turned off and then with it turned on. It is obvious that UFW works.

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?

However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)

and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)

I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my laptop, I have stable installed. The original install was about two years ago, and I've just been keeping up with all of the stable updates. It is now an up to date Lenny. Over the months and years I have added several new icon themes to Gnome. I have noticed over time that several of the icon themes' icons have turned up missing. As you can see, icon themes Amaranth, Crux and Dropline Etiquette are missing their respective theme icons. The icon themes work, when selected, but the icon theme icon in the "Customize Theme" window never appears. Several of the other icon themes are the same. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the icon theme packs, but that doesn't fix it. I also have a desktop system of Debian stable with some of the same icon themes as on the laptop, but it does not have this problem. However, it is a much newer installation.
I accidentally removed messaging menu icon from gnome panel, and I can't put it back. I found this: [URL], but it doesn't say how to put the icon back on the panel.

However, when I installed GNOME (apt-get install ubuntu-desktop), I realized that KDM's default session is whatever session you used last time. I'd rather it simply be KDE, since I know I'll be using it most out of any of the others. How can I make the KDM default session be KDE, instead of whatever the previous session was?

I edited ~/.dmrc and /etc/sysconfig/desktop but this didn`t change anything. I was unable to find where GDM stores its default setting.
Is there any way to change GDM default session?
And more important: is there any way to make GDM to store different default sessions for different users?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 on my Sony Vaio netbook. I want to be able to log into a Gnome session as an alternative to UNR. The main reason for wanting to do this is to be able to add some applets to the panel which I use a lot. This is not possible in UNR, which is really irritating! However, I really like UNR otherwise, so don't want to just install standard version.
Synaptic shows that Gnome is not installed, but when I try to install it, I get this error message:

I tried uninstalling Epiphany, which I sometime use instead of Firefox, but still got the error. I installed Ubuntu-Desktop, but when I select "Gnome" from the session menue at the bottom of the login page, it just logs into UNR session.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the panel (taskbar) positioned on top. I then turned on "auto hide" in the panel properties (Gnome) to maximize the screen.The panel surely disappeared. The problem is that I cannot get it back no matter how much I hoover or click with the mouse - it is gone!...So how do I get it back??? I am rather new to Linux, but I figure that there should be a config file somewhere where I can set "auto hide" to false or something like this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues logging into my system... After authenticating via GDM, the screen goes black with only the mouse showing and remains this way indefinitely. At first the hard disk is active to a similar degree as it was when logins were successful, but then the system (apart from being able to move the mouse) is unresponsive.
If left for long enough so that the screen goes into power-saving mode, moving the mouse brings up the unlock dialogue that you normally get if you set your computer to lock itself after a period of idleness.
I suspect some sort of file corruption, as I have not changed any settings recently. I have forced checks on all of my disks in the hope it would solve this problem. I have also tested logging in on a freshly created user account I created which gives the same result. Also, starting an xterm session from GDM works fine.
In Unity I can run guest session but how to run it in Gnome 3?
