So, I just installed Kubuntu 10.04, and couldn't let things be, so I installed GNOME, and plan to install a few other desktop environments for fun later. However, when I installed GNOME (apt-get install ubuntu-desktop), I realized that KDM's default session is whatever session you used last time. I'd rather it simply be KDE, since I know I'll be using it most out of any of the others. How can I make the KDM default session be KDE, instead of whatever the previous session was?
I installed Fedora 12 LXDE spin and its default session was LXDE. Then I downloaded XFCE and tried to change the default session of GDM to XFCE. I edited ~/.dmrc and /etc/sysconfig/desktop but this didn`t change anything. I was unable to find where GDM stores its default setting.
Is there any way to change GDM default session?
And more important: is there any way to make GDM to store different default sessions for different users?
I can't change the default session on the login screen to Openbox. The only place I can see to change this in 10.04 is in the "login" settings screen. I've done that; I still get "gnome" as the default option when I go to log in.
I have got Ubuntu with Xfce installed, and I would like to change default session to Gnome, or LXDE (depending on if my computer would run it properly). Looks like there is no options button while logging in, or anything similar.
I would like to make LXDE the default desktop for ALL USERS on my LTSP clients. There are about 60 users so far.On my server, LXDE is default for everyone. But on the clients, each user has to change to LXDE individually. How can I make LXDE default on all clients?I've been looking through the forums all day, but could not find an answer to this question, so hopefully we can get an answer and my title will help others.
how to change when running command "adduser" or "useradd" the placement of the users home directory. Have tried editing the /etc/default/useradd file with no results.
I want it to be placed in /var/www And I would also want to know how more folders and files can be created in the home directory automatically.
I installed squid 2.7 and want to use squid_session external acl rule. But there is no squid_session in any dir, looked everywhere. On my Ubuntu box I also have squid 2.7 and there I have squid_session.
So, I wanted to give myself a short cut to not just login to a remote server, but also change into a particular directory once I got there. This was harder than I expected, but this finally worked when I wrapped this up into a shortcut: ssh -t user@example.com 'cd /var/www/mydir; bash' And I just alter the directory path to make another shortcut to a different place on the same server. This does work, however, it seems when I log in this way, some of my environment is lost, and my locale is set back to the default "POSIX". That's not good. I'm running Gentoo Linux (amd64).
I've set up Apache once or twice in the past, but my memory is escaping me on something simple. This time the OS is Cent5 with Apache/2.2.3
When a user browses to: [url] <nothing else> I get as expected, a '403 'You don't have permission to access' because directory browsing is off for obvious reasons :-) If I enter the full URL to the script: [url]it works as expected. No issues there.
What I would *like* to do (and I'm sure I've done this before) is to set the cgi-bin up so if someone leaves off the script name: http://host.name/cgi-bin/ it serves "index.cgi" pretty much in the same way that if you browse to the root http directory, you index.html||php would normally serve. I just can't remember how to achieve this simple thing and I'm starting to wonder 'am I mad? - Did I do this before?'.
Sanity check - index.cgi exists and runs if you call it directly thus:
Code:
I have added:
Code:
That made no difference.
Tried:
Code:
For good measure, but that made no difference - and even
Code:
and no amount of playing with 'Options Indexes || -Indexes || +Indexes' helped me.
Like I say, I'm sure I've done it before (on Debian/Ubuntu) without the need to start playing with redirects or .htaccess - but I'll be blowed if I can remember how.
I have just configured CentOS server my new office. This is the first time I am using CentOS.
Whenever I am trying to change the webroot of the httpd server, it usually say "directory doesn't exist". whereas which can't be the case as it is home directory of the user.
To achieve this, what Do I need to do?
The second issue, I am facing that whenever I am adding new directories to public_html folder, it is not accessible. as the error page 404 is shown. I have changed the permissions to 0705 and ownership is also transferred to other user. What else is required to make new directories accessible by the web?
I am using VSFTPD as my FTP daemon. I want it to be set up so that my user (cj) will have a default directory of / when I log on to the FTP server and I want the secondary account (guest) to have it's home directory as the default location without any access to the root of the drive.
I need my account to have the default as / because the FTP client that I use in Windows won't go up to the parent directory of the default. Therefore, I cannot access the rest of my drive.
When I set "local_root" to "/" , it brings both users to the / directory when they sign in, even though the guest account is set to open the home directory with the "chroot_list_enable". It seems like the local_root option overrides the chroot_list_enable option.
Is there any way to set the default directory for each local user separately?
Also, Let me know if this is impossible with this FTP daemon
When you first access Nagios, it displays the Home page (the Nagios Core version and check for updates page). I would like to have a way to change the default page to either the Tactical Overview display or the Services display. This question was asked here, but not answered
I want to change my ssh port from the default 22 to something else. I did the following: vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config; uncommented Port 22 and changed it to the desired port number. After that I run service sshd restart for the change to take an effect. Now, when I want to login into the new port I receive this message - Network error:Unable to route to host. When I change the port back to 22, I will be able to login again.
I installed Ubuntu Server and want to change the default user name to increase the difficulty of accessing the server. Is it possible to do this? If not, can I effect the same change by creating a new user and transferring over permissions, files, and etc.?
I finally got the server running. All seems OKAY, however I want to change the default player on my server. As of now, when I upload a file, it plays but has no "play/pause/stop/mute/fullscreen" buttons. How do I get those? I've tried installing FFMPEG, MPlayer and a few others to no avail. Please suggest a tried&true method of allowing for this. I need it to be able to at least play audio(mp3) and video(mp4,wmv,avi,flv)
I'm using CFEngine 2.2.8 to configure a network of Debian servers, the servers have two interfaces eth0 and eth1, how can I configure cfagent to take as the default interface eth1? eth0 is the internal interface and eht1 is the one with the public IP, I need to define classes based on lists of public IPs and it would be really helpfull if I could use functions as IPRange that only consider IP in eth0 interface.
I am now using CentOS5 as the server providing Apache services. I have managed to setup the web page under /home/user1/public_html, now I wish to change the default web page of our server to /home/user1/public_html. i tried to modify httpd.conf, in which i changed the "/var/www/" to the above user directory, but didnot work. Please kindly suggest.

I just installed my Lubuntu, but I upgrade to lubuntu 11.04 (natty), after that I decided to try unity, so I installed ubuntu-desktop and unity, but when I try to start session on Ubuntu or unity it told me the title error, then I got the error. It open me a session without any menues and just a clean desktop. On another topic, after I upgrade, Lubuntu ask the password each time I turn on my computer, But when I try to change the settings and click on the button that say: enter session without asking password, that button appear locked. How do I unlock it?
