And, if so, how do I find out what it is?n trying to fix my SSH issues, I've been switching back and forth between the default user "ubuntu" and another user I created with the same attributes. I can switch from "ubuntu" to the new user just fine. However, I am unable to log back in as "ubuntu", because although there is apparently a password, I have no idea what it might be.he install does not allow you to select a password for the "ubuntu" user, and of course, to change the password, you need to know the old one first.hen I try to log back in as "ubuntu" from another user account, I get the password screen and then the display goes black. I assume that's what you get when you are not logged in at all?n any case, to get back to "ubuntu" again, I have to reboot.This is probably answered already somewhere, but searching didn't find it

I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?

After setting up a persistent Lubuntu (10.10) on a 4GB SD with Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.8 , I started changing the passwd of the original user ubuntu , but after rebooting, I can't log in. So I resorted to hitting Ctrl+the function key that gives you a CLI, and changed the password for "ubuntu" user then tried to log on again. No success.Then I created a new user with a password, and managed to log in with this user, but it is not the same experience, the menus are lacking, and it is not possible to log on to wifi, similar problem to this user

When I boot Ubuntu 10.04 then at first the login screen appears with the main user
"Peter"
and
"other..."
In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.
This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?

- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually

My bose ask me to convert a CentOS system password like "LMPQSMTE0nHlQ" to postfix MySQL MD5 Hased password, I find CentOS seems has 2 kinds of password form, one is shorter and the other is very long like"$1$C2MSk16n$WT5JWnzYH7XpCCjsiE2bd1", however I find postfix is exactly the later long one, so does any one know how to convert the short form to the later one

I am using mint 8 for a 2 weeks, I am noob to linux but I like Mint than any other linux distro which is great alternative to windows. I have a problem regarding password reseting.
1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?

Numerous packagesare asking for my default keyring password. The only password I have ever created on this newly installed netbook remix 9.1 is my user password. That is not accepted by the default keyring. I have tried to change the default keyring password using my administrator user name password.What is the default keyring password? I have Tango Studio installed on a usb stick which i wish to install alongside my current Maverick install. I booted up into it but when i click on the "install tango studio" icon i get asked for a password. I have searched google and i have not been able to find anything about this. It doesn't appear anywhere on their website and before someone says to ask on their forums i can't as their forums are not in english. I used start up disk creator to make the usb install but couldn't boot into it at first. I did some searching and found out that creating a usb install in maverick isn't backwards compatible. There was a simple solution which got me into the live mode, pressing tab, typing in live and then enter. I wonder if this is the reason why i am being asked for the password when i get into the live desktop? I have never had to put in a password before. I have tried a few generic passwords but no joy so i don't know what to do. Is there a default password that Ubuntu uses that would work for me so i could finally get it installed?

I just installed postgresql 8.4 package on my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop. Seems to have worked fine. But what is the password for logging into the databases created by user 'postgres'?
sudo su postgres
and then
createdb
or
psql mydb
fine and it never asks me for a password. But if I want to use pgadmin3, I want to enter passwd for postgres, etc.

I'm trying to install Lubuntu 10.04 beta 3 on an old computer to see if i can bring new life into the system but when i run the Cd if i choose run live session or try install Lubuntu straight it automatically takes me to a login screen to enter username and password.
Does anyone know the default username and password for Lubuntu 10.04 beta 3 ? ? ?

Worked with UNIX years ago, want to get back in.Just installed the 10.04 netbook remix on spare Asus eeePC 900 to muck about with and see what's what.Installation doesn't let me specify a root password, and none of the old chestnuts I remember from UNIX days work.

I just re-sized my windows partition on my laptop and installed 10.04.1. Brand new clean install. I set up my user account, gave it a password, and everything was fine until I tried to connect to my wireless. I typed in the security key for my wireless, and it asked for a password to unlock the default keyring. The problem is, I never set a password for the "default" keyring. I never changed my user password. I didn't auto-login, I entered my password. This was the first boot up of the machine after installing 10.04.1. I can't use Empathy, because the keyring cannot be unlocked. If I "cancel" it gives me an error saying the account details are wrong, but I log into my facebook, aim, and msn every day, so I know the passwords are correct.
I have read about other issues with the keyring and with the auto-login bug that is associated with it. I have also read up on the bug that occurs with that as well. I couldn't find anything about my specific situation, so I hope this isn't a re-post of an issue that has already dealt with, but I did look it up. If it helps, the laptop I am running is a HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx, and I have Ubuntu Desktop 10.04.1 x86 installed. Clean install and the only thing I have done was log in, connect to network, and try to set up Empathy. Both Empathy, and connecting to network, gave me the issues with the keyring. It appears that there is already a password for the default keyring, it is not blank, and my user login password does not work for it. I'm at a loss...

I have a desktop that I would like to use DWM with. I have used DWM before and love it, but that was on computers that no one else would use. Previously, I used xinitrc without a display manager. I'd like to keep my ubuntu 10.04 system more or less as is for all but one user- me. In the Login Screen preference dialog I can choose the default session but I would like to change only the default for one user. Is this possible? I'd like for gdm to just run an .xsession script as I did before instead of launching the default gnome session with metacity window manager, but I'll accept any solution which allows me to use dwm as the window manager for only one user. I'm very familiar with dwm and related tools but I do not have a proper understanding of how gdm works to fix this.

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 inside windows and every time I go to the terminal and type "su" it asks me for a password. Well the password I set before the install doesn't work, it gives me an authentication failure. I thought that since it was inside windows it didn't set me as a root user. I go to user groups and I see my name there and then "root" above it, but its grayed out. Is there a default root password I can enter?

My computer is recently asking for my 'default keyring password'to get access to the internet. It never used to do this as I am single user and never created a keyring password as far as I know. I dont even use a login password.Luckily i tried my administrator password and that unlocks my keyring but I would like to get it back to no password or auto unlock mode.

The only problem I am experiencing is that when I boot Ubuntu quickly finds my wireless network but does not automatically connect to it. A window then comes up asking me to "enter password for Keyring default". After having then entered this password the connection does take place and remain stable. So really no big deal but why do I need to do this every time I boot up. This is new to me. Never had anything like this on previous versions.

In 9.04 this worked. Log out and in 10 seconds a default user logs in if no keys are pressed. I need this in 10.04. This is great for my Mom's PC. When one of her grandchildren visits for the weekend they can log Mom out and use their ID, bookmarks games etc. Then when they finish they logout and the PC logs Mom back in. Mom doesn't have to fish around for a password. She's 81 and I try to make things easy for her. In both 10.04 and 9.04 I have /etc/gdm/custom.conf with

In 9.04 log out and in 10 seconds it does an autologin. With 10.04 log out and it goes to the select a user screen and stays there. Where is the configuration file? What do I change? Disable something like SELinux?
