Ubuntu :: Decreasing The Number Of Desktops (workspaces) Matter?
Aug 11, 2011I only use one workspace anyway, so I was wondering if there was any benefit to removing the other three? By that, I mean performance-wise benefits.

View 2 Repliesfor a month or so I have had a problem with the way that a programme interacts with (I think) KDE. If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. I thought it was due to a buggy update and that it would get sorted in time. The prog is a windows prog running flawlessy under Crossover, at least it was until this started. If is put all my open windows on the same desktop,

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to check how many workspaces my desktop could have at once, and it got stuck at 36. Now i can't reduce the number. When I click the workspace switcher, and press "preferences", the preferences screen flickers like crazy, and I can't change it. The window title bars and borders are altso gone, but gnome is running. I don't have compiz running.
Is there any way of reducing the amount of workspaces, through gconf, or terminal?
On older versions of Fedora, I right-clicked on Workspace Switcher and in Preferences window I could change the number of Workspaces.
I Fedora 10, I can only choose between 'Show only the current workspace' and 'Show all workspaces in <No of rows>'.?
How can I change number of Workspaces from 4 to 6 on gnome in Fedora 10?
When I rightclick on the workspace applet, and go to preferences, there is no option to change the number of desktops. Nor is there an option in the "desktop effects" application under System>Preferences.
I installed ccsm, and changing the number of desktops in there does not do anything.
I am running fedora 13.
what might cause a file transfer to start out fast (11-12 mb/sec) and then drop to about 1 mb/sec after having downloaded about 2 gb? This is what happens when I download files from my old fit-pc 1.0 (a small mini PC with 256 MB/RAM, an AMD Geode processor, and a 100 mbps network card) via ftp over my local network. Is it some buffer filling up?
I was directed to some article about "bufferbloat" earlier [URL], but I did not get any solution from that unfortunately. I have tried increasing the server's TCP buffer using these instructions: [URL] , but it does not make any difference. By the way, I am running Ubuntu Server 10.10 on the fit-pc and Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on the connecting client (which is just a normal Core 2 duo, 4 gb ram computer).
UPDATE: I should add that things were working fine when I was using ubuntu 7.10, but are not now that I have installed 10.10...
UPDATE 2: I just found out this is ONLY a propblem when transferring files to ubuntu. If I use winscp from Windows 7, the transfer speeds are fine...
UPDATE 3: It seemed it was gFTP that was the culprit. Transferring the files using filezilla instead in Ubuntu yields an excellent rate of 11.8 MB/sec. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong with gFTP?
The case is that everytime I try to copy a big file to a pendrive the velocity start falling and 1gb could spend about half an hour. If I try to use another application like chromium the system turns so slow that is imposible to work.
This doesn't happen with an usb hard drive and this usb pendrive works just fine in mac os x and Windows.
I've found some answers that aren't my case, the problem in opensuse 9 or 10 don't remember that the problem was the rsync option while mounting the drive.
I'm using now opensuse 11.2
I am running a fedora 12. My free space is continuously decreasing every time I restart my computer. I haven't installed any software nor I am using internet. Also do I need to manually delete temporary files or fedora does it on its own?

What I mean by to an extent is that I can move the cursor around, but I can't click on anything. What causes minecraft to crash and how can I solve it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI need write a script that can compare multiple input files and output a file. The basic idea is:1: All my input files are in the same format2: I want to find in-common lines (in-common 1) from some of my input files (e.g., input1, 2 an 3), and find in-common lines (in-common 2) from the rest of my input files (e.g., input 4,5,6,7). And then, compare in-common1 and in-common2 and remove any overlap from in-common 1.3: Output the remaining in-common 1 file after removing any of its overlap with in-common 2I know how to write this script by putting all the filenames in one script and compare them. But the thing is, if I have more input files, such as 100, it might not be that efficient to write all filenames in one script and compare them.
I am wondering if there is any way to do such as:1: put all input filenames in a text file (file1)2: write a script3: Everytime, when I run this script, it will read in file1 directly no matter how many input files I have, give an output.I want this because I will have more and more input files and I don't wanna add multiple lines in the script just for reading the new inputfiles and compare them with the previous files. So, I guess this is something related to making my script a package or standardize it and make it easy to use in the future no matter how many input files I will have.
Is there a Ubuntu email app (free or retail, doesn't matter) that will read in the Outlook Inbox/Sent/Contacts?
We have a really old computer with 10 years of Outlook business mail on it, and would like to switch it over to Ubuntu (no dual boot).
In a new PC I had constantly BSoD. I tracked it down to bad memory modules and took them back to the shop.Specifically the RAM was Corsair. Anyway they said they will do test on memory to confirm. They did tests and admitted the RAM was faulty and gave me a replacement. At this point: originally I bought 2 kits of 4G RAM. One of the kits turned out bad. They gave me a replacement, it does not seem to be exactly the same, though. In any case, I became causious and as soon as I got them I put them in the PC and run KUbuntu memtest. It started showing thousands of errors! (Again!). I removed the new kit and run the test again. No errors. I swapped the slots I put the memory modules and also no errors. I can not understand now. Is the new RAM kit bad or not? Does the slots I place the kits matter?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI hope I'm posting in the right forum for this (since Scientific Linux is based on RHEL)...I downloaded the Scientific Linux 5.4 "Boron" Install DVD's, and I can't get the DVD to boot. It gets to the point where it tries to initialize SMP (I have a Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor), and it just crashes and reboots my computer. I've tried disabling ACPI, APIC and APM using the noacpi, no apic, and apm=off options, one at a time, and all 3 at once (since the problem seems to be with APIC, because it fails to initialize on all 4 of the processor cores)...does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here, or how I can fix this? I really want to run Scientific Linux, but I can't since it crashes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I've got access to both the Netbook Edition and the Desktop Edition, so I tried booting into the Desktop Edition since I prefer to use this.
Within it, I cannot use Alt-Tab to move between multiple windows. I don't have access to moving between workspaces; rather weirdly, I can move a window to a different workspace by right clicking on the application and selecting to move it to a different workspace but I cannot use Ctrl-Alt-Right or Left to move between workspaces, nor can I use Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Left or Right to move a window from one workspace to another.
I have checked the Keyboard Shortcuts under the System->Preferences side. Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Right/Left and Ctrl-Alt-Shift-Right/Left are all set as the commands for Moving between Windows using the popup window, moving to the right/left workspace and moving a window to the right/left workspace respectively.
I've seen a lot of people saying that they have problems when they've got compiz installed and alt-tab causes problems with this, but I don't have compiz installed.
Since I used sudo apt-get upgrade -d from my old 10.04 Netbook Edition, am I missing packages to correctly run the Desktop Edition?
Note: Within the Netbook Edition, I can use multiple workspaces and Alt-Tab does work, but the UI is very slow and causes the system to lag whenever I open an application.
I have been told it is possible to alt tab programs on different workspaces. The people that have done this on kde 3. How do you enable this on kde 4? I would really like to use this feature.
