Fedora :: The Volume File System Roots Space Is Decreasing?

My fedora keeps popping up this message of Low disk space..the volume file system roots has only 200 MB remaining.Then it came to 150 MB and now to 100MB.I am using fedora 13 on vmware .I set my vmware hard disk to 20 GB... my file system is showing 100 MB free while my home has 12.3GB free. Is there a way increase the size of my file system. similar problem has been in ubuntu [URL] but I dont know what to do with fedora.Also can some one tell me the way I can increase the size of usr folder .so that I can get some more softwares.Right now I am just stuck.
I am running a fedora 12. My free space is continuously decreasing every time I restart my computer. I haven't installed any software nor I am using internet. Also do I need to manually delete temporary files or fedora does it on its own?
I've been having a problem updating for the last few days. Everytime I try "yum update" it downloads the packages I need and when it tries to install them it stops because of this errors:Quote:

so i have f12 installed on my hd with lvm using the whole extent of the HD , i want to reduce it so i can dual boot it with a windows system, i managed to reduce the logical volume to free some space, but i cant seem to reduce the physical volume, is this possible and how ?
I have a VMWARE machine, I have extended it from 20GB to 30GB for Linux box.How do I take the additional 10GB that it has and allocate it to -dev-mapper-VolGroup00-LogVol00 ?That way I can use the 10GB of available space in that file system.
I have decided that my partition table does not meet my needs Barrymore, and I want to shrink the "/" partition by 80GB, and then create another file system on that space. I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easiest and more secure way to perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.
what might cause a file transfer to start out fast (11-12 mb/sec) and then drop to about 1 mb/sec after having downloaded about 2 gb? This is what happens when I download files from my old fit-pc 1.0 (a small mini PC with 256 MB/RAM, an AMD Geode processor, and a 100 mbps network card) via ftp over my local network. Is it some buffer filling up?
I was directed to some article about "bufferbloat" earlier [URL], but I did not get any solution from that unfortunately. I have tried increasing the server's TCP buffer using these instructions: [URL] , but it does not make any difference. By the way, I am running Ubuntu Server 10.10 on the fit-pc and Ubuntu 10.10 desktop on the connecting client (which is just a normal Core 2 duo, 4 gb ram computer).
UPDATE: I should add that things were working fine when I was using ubuntu 7.10, but are not now that I have installed 10.10...
UPDATE 2: I just found out this is ONLY a propblem when transferring files to ubuntu. If I use winscp from Windows 7, the transfer speeds are fine...
UPDATE 3: It seemed it was gFTP that was the culprit. Transferring the files using filezilla instead in Ubuntu yields an excellent rate of 11.8 MB/sec. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong with gFTP?
My computer: (Lenovo T61 Thinkpad, running fc11 for about 2 and half months). Apparently I when I made my partitions I didn't leave quite enough room in my root directory, because I just completely ran out. Here is how my hard drive is partitioned:
The root had about 15 gigs on it, which just filled up. When I restarted to see if that would help, when it rebooted it went fine up to the log-in screen. Instead of the usual fedora blue background, it was black except for the log-in window, which looked very low-res. A little pop-up kept coming up saying the GNOME power configuration settings failed to load or something. When I logged in, the whole screen was black except for the mouse, and I could get no response. I have plenty of space left in home, so I rebooted to rescue mode using the first fedora installation disk, and tried the following command:

lvreduce -L90G /dev/mapper/DRIVE
which only returned:

lvreduce: relocation error: lvreduce: symbol dm_tree_node_size_changed, version Base not defined in file libdevmapper.so.1.02 So I couldn't reduce the size of home, and thus couldn't increase the size of root.
IN SUMMARY:
a) the lack of memory in root the probable cause for my computer not working
b) there a good way to reduce home and increase root while running this live disk
Note: When I am looking at it now in the logical volume manager, it says that on the whole physical volume there is only 400MB free. However, when I last looked (about 30 mins before I started having problems) it said there were about 100 Gb free.
Edit: Nevermind. I did some more research and it turned out to be more of a gnome power manager thing rather than a memory space thing, although I'm certainly going to increase my root memory now.
I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.
In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config: /dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition. /dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk. /dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off: "Free" = 146.2 GiB "Total" = 409.7 GiB "Available" = 125.4 GiB "Used" = 263.5 GiB
is lvresize with --resizefs options re-size the Logical Volume and then re-size the file system? i mean we don't need to use resize2fs?I looked at man pages but it doesn't explain this option.
The space in the volume name seems to disagree with fstab and terminal, I can't change the volume name either as I do not have access to Windows at this time. Is there a way I can help fstab or the terminal to recognize the space in part of the volume name?
System76 laptop, 10.04, 320GB HDD, VMware with Win7 in one VM; want to use Clonezilla as am using it to back up (bare metal backup image) another older smaller dual-boot Ubuntu/XP machine. This System76 laptop is a work machine that I control; the Win7 VM only does a couple of things but they're necessary for work and I don't want to lose the configuration. The reason for the bare metal backup is so if I have to, I can restore and get back to work - something I've had to do on some previous occasions back when I used Windows. Data is no problem - I back that up separately on an hourly basis.
My question is what FS to use on the backup drive; for instance, for the dual-boot XP/Linux work machine I'm currently backing up, I'm using a 30GB external HDD formatted in FAT32. That's OK because 30GB is below the limit for FAT32. But for the newer laptop I'll need a much bigger backup partition. I chose FAT32 for the old one because I know everything on the computer being backed up, Windows & Linux both, is compatible with it. But what FS should I use to back up the new laptop, considering that I'll be backing up the Win7 VM as well as the main Linux part of the machine? I plan to use a backup partition of about 160GB. Could I format it NTFS and have it work with Ubuntu 10.04? Or, conversely, if I format it EXT, will it back up the Win7 VM OK?
i just installed Fedora 12 (via vbox 3.1.4). stupidly i started with 8G and, of course, ran out of space on the / filesystem. i added 8G to the drive which now shows as 17G.based on the below outputs, it looks like i have 8G more space available on the drive. based on reading other posts it looks like i need to use parted to increase the size but not sure how to do that.
i want to add space to my file system, i want to slice some space from my home directory coz it has a lot of space...i am just adding applications, but im runnint ofspace....what shall i do, without reformating or reinstalling my ubuntu 10.10?
So I wanted to copy a copy-prod disk and decided to try dd after reading some information about it. after running dd for about a minute, I got a warning that I was low on disk space. I stopped dd and found I had only 200 MB left of 200 GB free space (originally having over 220 free). I deleted the 1/2 finished backups but cannot find the data which was written to the drive. It is hard to think that that much data could be written with my slow pc in under one minute.here are the commands I performed if that helps locate the data:
i just installed ubuntu 9.10 onto my windows vista laptop. i ran ubuntu update manager but it tells me i'm low on disk space. system monitor tells me that i still have 50.2 GB of space but the problem is that i only have 68 MB left in my / File System. how can i increase disk space in / File System?
I've been trying to install ubuntu 11.04 64 bit on a partition next o windows 7 64 bit.When I use the default option (no matter how large I make the partition) I get the error message that not enough space could be created. I read this could e solved by defragmenting the hard drive which I did, but the problem persists.I next tried to partition manually but go the error message that there was "No root file system is de or something similar
We have recently built some RAC (OS:RHEL55) servers and after the Oracle guys have installed their application, somehow the directory / is using the maximum space. I contacted the Oracle team & they say that their RAC installation doesn't create any files in the / directory. This is the o/p of '/' directory file system:

I don't know what these files are doing there, when I did a cat and cheked, I found the files containing this data:

stem_dbusd_var_run_t...and some stuff like this Unable to decide whether or not to remove these files. Also, is there any way to find out what files are taking more space and whether they can be deleted or not? in order to free up some space in the / direcoty. As there are 10 RACs that we've build, I got to do something to fix this for all of the 10 servers.
I currently have a server with the default VolGroup00 that contains logical volumes for the root file system and swap using logical volumes LogVol00 (root) and LogVol01 (swap.) I need to take space from LogVol00 and move it to LogVol01. I have found documentation for increasing the swap, and the resizing the logical volumes. However in the documentation and the man pages it says that I have to reduce the size of teh file system on the logical volume I am going to shrink. I have found documentation resizing the logical volumes but not the file systems.
I used Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on IMac i7. As far as, I remember, after installing Pulse-Audio Equalizer, for each restart of the system, after login screen, system sets volume to maximum value. What can I do?
I'm using 32bit F12 on my Sony laptop. Each time the system is booted, the sound volume is 100%. Then I log in and set the volume to a much lower level. But when a media application, such as mplayer, is started, the volume is recovered to 100%. The 64bit F12 on a PC has the same sound problem
Given the name of a mounted volume (e.g., /mnt/vol), how would I determine its capacity and available space in C? I've been googling for a while now and nothing jumps out as the solution. I can use getmntent() to get the name of the actual partition that is associated with the mount point, e.g. /dev/sda2, but I can't figure out how to find the capacity of the volume nor how much space is remaining, such as what the df command shows. Is there an ioctl defined to get this information or some other system call?
I installed Slackware 12.1 as I dont like KDE4 much yet. Any way For Some reason I find I can only use the internet by using apps with root privileges. Does anyone know what I may need to edit by any chance & what.?
I just read and learned about logical volume management today. I have a server running RHEL5.4, LVM2. I have 1 physical volume, with one volume group, and 3 logical volumes. I have no free extents, nor do I have any in my volume group (not sure if it's possible to have free in one and not the other anyway), and I am running out of space on one of my logical volumes. Doing a df -h shows 96% of 9.7GB used on /dev/mapper/MainVG-root, mounted at /. So here's the stupid question: how can I find out what directories/files are taking up what space within this logical volume? As I said I have 3 all together, and the other 2 are mapped to /var and a /var pgsql sub-directory. I figured I could get the sizes of the other directories under / and drill down accordingly, but I seem to be missing some basic rule because the commands I am using and the values I am getting don't add up.
For example, it seemed logical to me to do an ls -lsh on / to try and identify the largest directories. Each directory is listed as being ~4-8K in size. That doesn't make sense to me. So I decided to do a du -sh on each directory. Having done this on all of the / sub-directories and added up those values, there is not enough reported usage here to equal 8.9GB of used space (as df -h / reports).how they would find out how the 9.7GB here is being allocated? Preferably without scripts as I am not ready to add a layer of complexity to this yet without understanding some fundamentals.
Ubuntu 10.04.1 I was just tidying up my panel when I notice the Volume icon is taking up the space of two icons: I can right-click and Move it to the left or right
HPDL385 with dual raid controllers (8 disks each). During the install of the ISO, it sees the raid controllers individually. I tried "One Generic Drive" but it still only partitions one of the raid controllers.Is it possible after the OS is installed to configure the space as one logical volume?
I plan to install a server using LVM. I thought a partition schema where /boot would be in an ext4 partition while / /usr /var /home and /opt would be in the LVM. My question is: if I'm putting / into the LVM, is it necessary to divide /usr /var /home and /opt into different logical volumes? If I divide them, would it become harder to maintain when new disk space has to be added to the volume group?
I'm getting an error message that something along the lines of "volume "filesystem root" has only 25mb space remaining". How do I increase the volume size so I never have to worry about it again? This is the 3rd time I've tried ubuntu and it's sticking more and more but this has me thoroughly perplexed. I've got a 320GB HDD partitioned 3 times with a Linux partition being 7GB.
