OpenSUSE :: Changing Desktops/workspaces Freezes App?

Feb 2, 2011

for a month or so I have had a problem with the way that a programme interacts with (I think) KDE. If I go away to a different vitual desktop/workspace, the programme in question locks up, using 100% of CPU and I have to kill it. I thought it was due to a buggy update and that it would get sorted in time. The prog is a windows prog running flawlessy under Crossover, at least it was until this started. If is put all my open windows on the same desktop,

OpenSUSE :: Return KDE Desktop To Default

Sep 3, 2010

so I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE and fooled around with it and the Plasma Netbook Workspaces and am now back with the regular KDE. Unfortunately something I have done has now caused me to not be able to do simple tings like change the wallpaper, or add Widgets to the desktop. Everything seems to "technically" work, so I suspect that it was a configuration somewhere that I messed up.

Is there a directory or directories I can delete and then log out and back in which will create the environment with default settings? I've done this with Gnome and Xfce when I've really messed it up and it has fixed things a number of times, but I am not sure where KDE stores their config files. I believe is it openSUSE 11.3 with the KDE version that came with it and it was installed from a LiveCD.

Networking :: DNAT IPtables - Default Gateway For Return Packages

Nov 26, 2009

Client which uses an ISP with a Linux machine (Server 1) with two network cards. Eth0 with ip 1.1.1.2 and gateway 1.1.1.1 these ip's is not public ip's and falls unders the isp's internal range, eth1 with the internal ip range. OpenVPN listen on eth0 for incoming connections. We want to connect to Server1 from external networks. Due to different reasons the isp could not get the routing sorted and give us an public ip on his network. We had to setup another bos (Server2) with eth0 2.2.2.5 and gateway 2.2.2.1 which is public ip's and eth1 with ip 3.3.3.5. Server 2 can communicate via the ISP internal network with server 1. I use DNAT to forward all incoming connections on server 2 to server 1 but the problem I have is that server uses its default gateway for the return packages and does not sent the reply back to server 2. My iptables rules looks as follows on server 2.

/usr/sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp -i eth0 -d 196.25.157.135 --dport 1194 -j DNAT --to 192.168.100.170:1194
/usr/sbin/iptables -A FORWARD -p udp -i eth0 -d 192.168.100.170 --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT

OpenSUSE :: Lost KDE 4.3 Default Desktop Window - New 11.2 Install

Nov 15, 2009

This is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".

How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.

Ubuntu :: Lost Default Icon Size In Nautilus?

May 28, 2011

some reason I lost my default icon sizes in Nautilus. This only appears to affect any graphic files like .jpg, .png, etc. that I keep in my "Pictures" folder. I also have this issue with video files that I keep in my "Video" folder.Currently I am running Ubuntu Natty and using the Ambiance theme that is customized with Faenznt icons. Nautilus is customized with Nautilus Elementary. Changing themes has no effect. The folders all appear normal and other icon file types appear normal, it's just my graphic d video files that are appearing small.Running dconf editor shows my icon setting is set to normal. I am enclosing a pic so you can see the folders display at a normal size, but the graphic files do not.

When I disable it to appear on one workspace, then close and restart(program), Gedit opens normal (current workspace). Question is: How to keep this current configuration? If I restart my system, and start up Gedit, it appears on all workspaces again.

I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.

I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx. that seems to only start KDE.

Can you use startx in some way to optionally start another environment? If not, can it be set up to start that graphical umm.. like start chooser screen? I don't know all the terms but its the screen that comes up that you enter your username/password and you can select which environment you like.

General :: XDMCP Slow - Looking For Alternative Remote Desktops

Mar 16, 2010

I've been used to using RDP on Windows to remote to machines, and I've got an asus eee 701 which I want to use to do some *nix programming on. While the eee is a lovely little machine the screen and keyboard are a little small to use for lots of programming. I've tried using Xming (the free version) to remote login into the eee from my desktop using XDMCP (or even using a ssh session as a straight X11 server and no desktop on the eee) the whole thing seems seriously slow over wifi the initial desktop takes at least 5 seconds to paint (might even be 10 seconds I haven't actually timed it). So my real question is what do other folks use for remote control with a GUI for their *nix boxes? I am finding it hard to believe the performance is so bad over a wifi network (It makes the Mac IIs I used to use a college in 1988 seem fast) or is this just a problem with Xming and using say the Cygwin X11 server would be better.
