running xubuntu 10.04 on an older machine and no matter what the power management settings, the monitor keeps being turned off.Is there any other way (command line, maybe) to completely turn off the monitor power management?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've only recently switched to Ubuntu and overall I'm loving it. When i first installed it shut down perfectly from the GUI. After updating from the Update Manager, I've had problems. Now it shuts down but my PC doesn't power down.
I can manually make it shut and power down from the terminal with the command:
sudo shutdown -h -P now
or:
sudo poweroff
The fact that it works from the Terminal but not from the GUI suggests there might be a coding problem with the GUI but discovering and fixing that is way beyond my capabilties.
i was watching some videos on videos in fullscreen and after being idle the screen turns off. is there a setting to change this or do i have to disable putting the display to sleep in the power manager?----- edit -----i forgot to mention that i am using ubuntu classic. also, i disabled putting the display to sleep in the gnome power manager, but the screen still shuts off if the system is idle. guessing that the gnome power manager isn't actually in control.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed ubuntu on one of my computers and loved it so i put together another computer the motherboard did not have a build in on board video card so i put in a ATI (graphics by rage) 128pro graphics card, and wen i run the instalation of the O/S after it says batterie check [ok] the screens sorta shuts off i guess and does not trurn back on, its a desktop computer 1.6procesor 512mb ram, and was working previously with a win xp.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was up all night trying to set up for a switch from Linux Mint 10 32-bit to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. For the most part, the migration has been successful. However, I'm having an issue with the power management settings: even though I've told Power Management to never turn off or lock the display, it does so anyway. I've saved it as default, rebooted, and still the same - after several minutes, the screen turns off and shows the lock screen when I wake it up with the mouse.

Problem is that when I want to change some settings in the power management (like brightness, screen energy saving time-off, display dim), they doesn't seem to save, even after the X restart and full reboot. It's seems like screen energy saving is set permanently for couple of minutes, don't matter what time do i set, it just discards my settings, even they are correctly viewed in the gui.

Went into "system settings" and checked the power-management settings and, as I expected, there were no management profiles. "Here we go again" I thought and logged off and then back on again. Checked the settings and there was "performance", the only one available. As usual in this situation, I'd tried "restore default profiles" and there were none.
Why does this profile keep getting lost in this manner? Where is it (and defaults if any?) supposed to be stored?

How can I set it so that the account can change the settings in power manager? They're all grey'd out and unchangable And when I click on hibernate, it says suspend and hibernate are only supported through HAL, which is unavailable. I'm sure that hald is running.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm coming over from Ubuntu and am experiencing the same power issue I had there, only there doesn't seem to be a setting in Gconf in Fedora like there was in Ubuntu that can fix it. You know how the system determines whether or not to hibernate based on the amount of time the battery has been unplugged? Well there's a bug in Gnome that makes it say I have only two minutes left on a full battery,
so if I ever unplug my laptop it immediately goes in to hibernation. Now in Ubuntu there was a Gconf Editor setting that could be changed so that it went by percentage, but this option seems to be gone in Fedora. I have Gconf Editor installed but I can't find the setting anywhere.
I have an odd problem since preupgrading from Fedora 12 to Fedora 14.
My power management settings are set to never put the monitor to sleep, yet after a certain amount of time, lo and behold, the Fedora box has gone blank and I have to enter my user information and password to get back to my gnome session.
In the power management preferences I have "never" selected for both putting the computer or display to sleep.
In the screensaver preferences "Lock Screen After" is *not* checked. (And if I click "advanced" I also note that "Power Management Enabled" is also *not* checked).
I'd just as soon not have to "log on" to this machine every time I'm away from it for a while.
I have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly.However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.

The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.
Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present
In Ubuntu 10.04: if the screen has been locked (automatically by the screensaver or user-activated using the top-right menu) pressing the power button doesn't initiate shutdown. Is this a bug or is it a configurable option?I would expect to either get the usual 60 second shutdown delay or a graceful shutdown right away.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am building a small Ubuntu box made for our clients to listen to an audio stream. At startup, I have scripts that start the audio stream, then locks the screen so clients can't change any settings. It works flawlessly.
However, if a client has to shut down the box, they can't. Note this is a headless unit, no monitor, keyboard, or mouse. It will ONLY be used to play streaming audio. I need for the client to be able to safely shutdown the unit by pressing the power button. But, when the power button is pressed, ubuntu asks for the user password. Is there a way to just make the system shutdown without entering a password?
I'm on 10.10 64 bit. I have my power management settings configured so that on AC power, after 0:30 the screen is supposed to go to sleep.
But the problem is that it never goes to sleep. The screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, as scheduled, but when I come back even after a long period of time, the screen hasn't gone to sleep (it hasn't gone into low-power mode).
Please let me know what specific config information I should provide to help debug this and I'll post it here.
