Ubuntu :: Create A Hacker Looking Desktop And Thought I'd?

May 22, 2010

I'm thinking of experimenting abit with my desktop and I want to create a hacker looking desktop and thought I'd do this by having lots of terminal apps, I'd like to hear some of your suggestions on the following stuff.

1. What WM should I use (I'm thinking something in a style of awesome wm,that is a tiling one)

2. What terminal client should I use (the gnome terminal doesn't look very good with the menubar, I guess I could remove it but still any alternative would be cool.

3. Some generic apps that are ran in the terminal (A nice media player, IM client (must have ICQ and MSN support), file manager, IRC client, mail client, generic gadgets like a clock for instance etc.)

Ubuntu :: Resize Partitions - Thought Knew Not Working?

Jan 21, 2010

My ubuntu partition is tiny (~9 GB, ~5 free) and my vista partition is big (~100 GB, ~60 free). I need to reverse this (so I can move all my documents and music (~40 GB) over to the ubuntu portion from the external HD they're on now). I'm using karmic. I installed gparted, but I couldn't figure out how to make it let me access the resize option.

So I booted with the karmic live CD and used gparted there. It let me set up the shrink on the vista partition, but gave me an error in actual running (I'll post the error details at the bottom).

The error details seem to be saying that I should try shrinking it less? But I was already leaving more than 10 GB free space there, no? Does anyone know how to help me past this sticking point here? This is one of the vital steps for me in switching over to using ubuntu as my main OS, and hopefully leaving vista behind.

Ubuntu Servers :: Both The Virual Machines Have 50GB Of Harddrive Thought One Had Another 1TB To Use

Jan 10, 2011

I'm the proud owner of a new 1U server, thought dont really know how to handle the next problem. The server runs VMWare ESXi 4.x and currently contains two virtual machines with Ubuntu server 10.04 installed on them. Both the virual machines have 50GB of Harddrive, thought one had another 1TB to use.

One of these virtual machines is going to be a fileserver (and has the 1TB for that reason) while the other machine is purely going to be used as webserver. The system uses one harddiskdrive of 1.5TB (hardware raid 1 configured)

The fileserver will contain images, which should be shown on the webserver. Therefor I need to setup a link between the images directory on the fileserver, so it can be accessed by the webserver. Now this is one and the same harddisk, but the partition is only availeble in the fileserver.

How can i configure this directory, so it can be accessed by the webserver automatically (e.g. that I dont have to remount the directory, after the fileserver has been down for whatever reason)

Ubuntu Security :: Victim Of A Bad Chinese Hacker?

Sep 4, 2010

Well, I was randomly taking a look at my vsftpd log today, and came across something unusual to myself. About a week ago a computer tried to connect to my computer repeatedly with bogus default usernames. There were many attempted connections with usernames such as 'user', 'root', 'linux', and 'login'. Probably about 1000 attempts, within about 2 seconds of each other.

Security :: How To Trace Hacker

Dec 2, 2010

I manage a dedicated webserver running OpenSuse 11 which is currently hosting about 30 sites. I have never had any big problems until these last 2-3 months. One site after the other was being hacked and the unwanted visitor installed all kind of php shell scripts followed by torrent servers, ... etc. All hacked sites were sites using Joomla, so what I did was to close down those sites one by one. Well, I guess we all know Joomla is not a great solution if you just install it out of the box like those users were doing.

When trying to trace the intruder only some african junk IPs and IPs from a company selling VPN connections thru paypal show up (yeah great, love those guys ... do they really think that serious VPN users will pay with paypal) I checked all apache and FTP logs (yes, he even managed to get some FTP login) but only those damn 'proxy' IPs come up. The weird thing is that the guy seems to know how the server was 'build' since he manages to copy stuff from one site to the other. That is why I am suspecting someone who worked for a clients company, but I need proof. One way would be to let him hack a site and try to feed him something that would make him traceable, but what?

Ubuntu Security :: Hacker Accessing Remote Desk?

Aug 21, 2010

I had remote desk running on a machine and I went downstairs the other day, turned it on, and someone was controlling the machine. Of course that's partially my fault since there was -zero- rd password set. However, my question is how did this person figure out my IP and get past the router to the machine? I don't have any forwarding setup. My router admin password is (has always been) strong. I guess my question now is: Is there anyway to restrict rd access to the local network?

Security :: Compromised Systems Notify Hacker They Are Infected

Dec 4, 2010

I have a server connected to the internet placed in a DMZ that was running ProFTPD. A couple of weeks ago there was a security threat uncovered that would grant access to external users through a buffer overflow. Of course I patched my ProFTPD quite often after that to secure my server. Now my problem is that the servers of ProFTPD were compromised and that source code with a back-door was released. To make matters worse compromised systems notify the hacker they are infected. is there any way to ensure I don't have a root-kit installed short of reinstalling the system?

Aug 12, 2011

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Ubuntu :: Create Shortcuts To Desktop From A Folder On NAS Drive?

Jan 1, 2011

Like always Linux likes to make the easy tasks in life a little bit more difficult.

I have a NAS and Ubuntu 10.x I like to make a shortcut from a folder on the NAS drive to the desktop.

If i right click on the file and click 'Make Link' it tells me that the target does not support symbolic links.

So what can I do to make it happen?

is there maybe a way so mount the NAS like a fixed system disk? Because from the system disc I am able to make links.

Ubuntu :: Create Shortcuts To Network Shares On The Desktop?

Mar 11, 2011

I'm in a situation where we might see a few Ubuntu machines added to the fleet of systems here at work (school district). A problem that I'm facing is I would like to do a very, very simple task in Ubuntu, which is to create a shortcut share to a network resource. On Windows, you can right click - new - shortcut - \servershare, done. Then when you click on it, you have the appropriate permissions within the folder based on what permission settings exist on the actual server where the folder resides.

In Ubuntu, the closest I can get is to create these shortcut links on the left side of Nautilus in the bookmark pane. Here's the part that rages me to no end. If I log out and back in, they're ALL renamed to "smb". LOL. What. Really? I'd like to create shortcuts for several network resources. I'd like these links to either be within the Nautilus bookmark area, or within the desktop itself. Ubuntu is on the domain,

General :: Create Trash Shortcut In Desktop In Ubuntu?

Nov 17, 2010

using the command ln -s ~/Desktop ~/.local/share/Trash I get this message.ln: creating symbolic link `/home/denish/.local/share/Trash': File exists But the link isn't in my desktop. So I tried accessing the Trash folder using cd. I cd into ~/.local/share then try the following command.cd Trash I get this message. bash: cd: Trash: No such file or directory When I type ls in the share folder I get the following.

gsettings-data-convert gvfs-metadata Trash

So the trash folder is in there but i can't access it. Why? Also I want a computer shortcut in my desktop like in windows where I can access all the folders from.

Fedora Installation :: How To Create A Desktop Launcher

Mar 26, 2010

I am having trouble creating a desktop launcher icon for an application that needs to run in terminal mode and is run with "mono". After creating the launcher on the desktop it launches the terminal window and then gives the error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal", and the terminal window is blank. Here are the steps I use to launch the application in a many step process. click on applications/system tools/terminal then in the terminal window I type, cd /var/opensim/Test/bin mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe The above steps work just fine and the instance of the application runs just fine, but it is rather tedious to enter in all that everytime I want to run the application.

1 - place a desktop icon on my desktop to launch the application,

2 - Launch this application when I reboot Fedora so it starts automatically whenever I boot.

The way I created the desktop launcher was to right click on the desktop and select create launcher. I selected "application in terminal" and when I entered in the command line, I added "mono" to the command after navigating to the place the application was with the correct path. Here is the actual command line that is in the launcher that throws the error message.

/var/opensim/Test/bin/mono OpenSim.32BitLaunch.exe
