using the command ln -s ~/Desktop ~/.local/share/Trash I get this message.ln: creating symbolic link `/home/denish/.local/share/Trash': File exists But the link isn't in my desktop. So I tried accessing the Trash folder using cd. I cd into ~/.local/share then try the following command.cd Trash I get this message. bash: cd: Trash: No such file or directory When I type ls in the share folder I get the following.
gsettings-data-convert gvfs-metadata Trash
So the trash folder is in there but i can't access it. Why? Also I want a computer shortcut in my desktop like in windows where I can access all the folders from.

I'm trying to create a web shortcut (desktop file) by dragging the icon from the Firefox address bar to a Thunar folder or desktop. This worked with older versions of Thunar and Firefox, but now that I'm running Xubuntu Natty (Firefox 5 and Thunar 1.2.1) it fails. Depending on the web site I try, it either creates a file containing the page's html instead of creating a .desktop shortcut file, or fails to create any file at all.

try to keep file system organized on XP instead of C:program files*everything goes blindly here I use C:MEDIA*category*application_name.So where in Debian on the hard drive are programs actually installed to? There's a couple programs that the sites merely gave me zip files instead of installers that were also not like in the package manager so I'd like to know where to extract those files. Also how do I create a shortcut in the "start" menu to the executable?

I installed 11.3 32 bit KDE on my system I had been running 11.0 32 for over a year.nVidia card, AMD quad, 4 gig RAM.Blender runs fine, fast and clean, when I exit, it takes a couple of seconds before I get control back.If I play a game, ArmagetronIOQuake, FrozenBubble - when I exit I get my mouse pointer back in a few seconds, you see a couple of the windows open on the desktop for a brief second but all goes black. When you move the mouse pointer around the screen it changes as if it is going over an icon or window but it does not recover.

I Installed wine and starcraft recently, which I have been able to run before but It didn't like my new computer. Whatever, Starcraft 2 comes out soon and I have played my fair share of broodwar, so i decided to uninstall it. I removedarcraft from wine and then wine itself, however my Gnome-Do still has the shortcut/iconor starcraft when I type it in. Im guessing i need to go into gconfig-editor to fix it, but Im not brave enough to venture in without any advice before hand.

I'd like to create a launcher for ParaView that requires a terminal shell in order to launch. It is just a pain having to enter the couple of lines to launch it from Konsole.
cd /home/user/Document/ParaView(version)/bin
./paraview
Lemme know what you think. I'd just like to add something to the quick launch panel.

Here is the issue:I create saome variables to make shortcut to some directories I go frequently (so, I then I type, e.g. cd $P_DIR). Of Course before that I put a valid value into P_DIR variabe. Also, alias, asalias cls=clearSo, I type cls, and is the same as the commando clear (but shorter)What I want to do is that those variables as aliases stay in the computer when I reboot or turn off and turn on.So, I put "somewhere" (this is the place(s) maybe one for variables, and other for aliases, turn of the computer, and when I turn on, the aliases and variables are still there

I installed matlab for linux via the installer. When I type into the terminal as normal user:
Code:
matlab
the program starts perfectly fine. I want now a click-able icon on the desktop (KDE3.5). So when I produce the application shortcut, no matter how I do define the command, it will not start. I did put Command: matlab (tried also matlab glnx86) I joined in advanced: start in terminal (but it does not work either) I did join the complete and correct path...... Somehow....I do not understand why it starts from the console in user-mode without problems with the command but not while using a shortcut.

even though this is a simple task I always have problems to do this.I want to execute the following#!/bin/bashjava -jar JabRef-2.6.jaror in other words this is the command I use in konsole to make the application to launch. Then usully I try to create a desktop in the icon either by using a. create link to locationorb. create link to application.where I select as file the file myfile.sh that contains the two lines of code I posted above (see again below)
"#!/bin/bashjava -jar JabRef-2.6.jar"I do this file executable by using the chmod +x.Sometimes I think this works while others like now I only receive the cursor bouncing for sometime before it dissapears

In these days I was doing some experiments: creating rpms of different programs by compiling directly the source code. Everything went well, every-time I was able to create a rpm and install it correctly, no errors no issues. Unfortunately I was not able to find the way to create in the menu (application tab) any quick launch icon. I was forced always to use the terminal and digit the correspondent command :wxmaxima, gnuplot, etc. I tried to look in the manuals but there wasn't anything useful.
By the way I am using Opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4.

I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.
When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_decrease_key'
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_increase_key'
and the following two messages like 20 or so times:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_append: assertion `VALID_ITER (parent, tree_store)' failed
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_set_valist: assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, tree_store)' failed
I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.

I normally run 11.3 with the desktop "folder view" but thought I would try something different - I think it was the search and launch view. After playing with it for a while I wanted to change back but found that right clicking on the desktop no longer launches the usual menu. If I change to "netbook form" rather than desktop, the menu is there, but even rebooting has not fixed the problem.

First things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.

I need to have "Visual effects" set to None in order to play 3d games or other tasks such as watching DVDs, etc. The reason is that I get very poor FPS if visual effects are enabled. For example, I can have 150 frames per second on Quake, but with visual effects it drops down to 30. Movies will jitter and flicker a lot until I turn off the effects. I don't have a weak machine; 2 GB memory and 2 Ghz. Nvidia 8400 graphics. This problem was on Vista when I had that on my laptop years ago.
