View 3 Replies View RelatedI simply cannot find anyway to create a simple desktop shortcut. I am Using Linux Ubuntu 11.04 with the Unity Interface. I love the panel on the side, but I would also like simple desktop shortcuts also. I can't do it. I tried dragging them on and nothing, I tried right clicking to see if there was an option and nothing. Where can I do this?

I have a NAS and Ubuntu 10.x I like to make a shortcut from a folder on the NAS drive to the desktop.
If i right click on the file and click 'Make Link' it tells me that the target does not support symbolic links.
So what can I do to make it happen?
is there maybe a way so mount the NAS like a fixed system disk? Because from the system disc I am able to make links.
I'm in a situation where we might see a few Ubuntu machines added to the fleet of systems here at work (school district). A problem that I'm facing is I would like to do a very, very simple task in Ubuntu, which is to create a shortcut share to a network resource. On Windows, you can right click - new - shortcut - \servershare, done. Then when you click on it, you have the appropriate permissions within the folder based on what permission settings exist on the actual server where the folder resides.
In Ubuntu, the closest I can get is to create these shortcut links on the left side of Nautilus in the bookmark pane. Here's the part that rages me to no end. If I log out and back in, they're ALL renamed to "smb". LOL. What. Really? I'd like to create shortcuts for several network resources. I'd like these links to either be within the Nautilus bookmark area, or within the desktop itself. Ubuntu is on the domain,
is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedStarting with Slackware 13.1, I am having trouble with keyboard application shortcuts in Xfce. Most of the time, they are not set up at login, for example Alt+F2 for Run prompt, and some custom ones. The fix each time is to kill the xfce4-settings-helper process, which somehow automatically restarts, and the keyboard shortcuts all work after that. But this is annoying.
Has anyone else seen this? I found this bug report which seems to match this problem. But there is no fix, and the bug report goes back to Aug 2009. [url]
I'm pretty sure Slackware 13.0 has the exact same version Xfce-4.6.1 but I never saw this problem under 13.0.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using -current (xfce-4.6.2) I've noticed that the shortcuts I define aren't working anymore. The ones I define through windowmanager -> keyboard are ok, but the ones through keyboard-> application shortcuts are ignored.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running XFCE on slackware64-current. I've had this problem for a number of months now. Every so often, XFCE will decide to not recognize key combinations that are mapped to keyboard shortcuts. For example, hitting ALT+F2 will not bring up the xfrun4 dialog box. This happens to all of my keyboard shortcuts (e.g., volume keys).
For now, I've resorted to going into the keyboard shortcut settings and double-clicking on each assignment and then hitting ok. This seems to correct whatever corruption is occurring. What's even more unusual is that all of the settings appear to be intact in the settings box and even in the .xml file.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to disable shortcut keys in XFCE Terminal ? I can't seem to bind the shortcut keys, and F1 especially really gets in the way for some programs. Have no clue who thought it would be a good idea to bind F1 to a stupid help screen, when many terminal programs need this. I am using fluxbox, so maybe this has something to do with it.

Booting debian with xfce desktop (8.2, amd64) using a live cd of iso hybrid. While a wired network can be easily connected using network manager, it fails to recognize the mobile broadband (I am using a USB dongle). The network manager gui disappears after I select `Mobile Broadband'. Moreover, Code: Select allnmcli -p con does not recognize the gsm connection, but Code: Select allnmcli dev status returns that a USB gsm connection is present at ttyUSB3.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Googling about this said to make sure xfdesktop was running. I have.Changes made to the panel, to startup and session persist. But number of workplaces, wallpaper, font, theme and so on revert to what they were before. These settings are from when I used Xfce before in Ubuntu 8.04. (My /home dir is on its own partition and I like to keep all my config files for apps I have used and might want to again.)I suspect I might need to delete a config file but I'd rather not undo all of the other settings that do work. Which? Or is it something else?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.
Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective. It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.
I have just tried XFCE4. Everything is cool except that when i select, let's say, 5 files on Desktop i can't move them simultaneously. I can move just one file. Is this normal behavior of XFCE?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed SUSE 11.4/KDE4.6 and some apps - including the pgAdmin3 GUI client app for PostgreSQL database. AFAIK the apps were installed and the correct files appear in their respective folders.
One of the progs I need is pgAdmin3 which exists in the /usr/bin folder. However when I try to launch this from the app launcher the file is not found. (If I start from a terminal command it works correctly).
I'd like to be able to create either a shortcut or app menu entry to launch this app. However if I right click on the file (in the Dolphin fm) there is no 'Create Shortcut' option. AFAIK I though this used to work.
How can I create shortcut from one ftp folder to another using SFTP client such as WinSCP with Putty?
For example, application path is /home/primary/webapps/appication/
We have created new user with default home directory /home/secondary/
Using Bash command:
setfacl -R -m u:secondary:rwx /home/primary/webapps/appication/
we added full Read-Write permission for secondary user.
To access application folder he suppose to type full path to application folder which is not so convenient for daily usage.
As a solution I would like to create some shortcuts in home directory to this folders as I seen something similar in default cPanel configuration where PUBLIC_HTML folder has some alias such as WWW.
Have just put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on an old laptop for parental units. They pick it up in thirty minutes. I have got the bloody Broadcom wireless working. I have got Skype set up. I have done everything except put some web shortcuts to pages like Yahoo Mail on the Favourites page because... the Hell? How do I do that?
No, bookmarks in Firefox aren't good enough. I want a friendly icons on their desktop. This has to be incredibly obvious
Does anyone know how to make custom keyboard shortcuts? The commands don't seem to cross over to the system>preferences>keyboard shortcuts utility. For example, I added the file browser to my desktop. I right click, select properties, and the command is:
However, when I add a custom shortcut with that same command it doesn't work.
For example - when coding in Perl, I need to sometimes comment out a bunch of lines. What I do is something like
:80,96 s/^(.*)$/#1/
I want to create a custom shortcut for this so that I can do something like
:80,96 cm
for commenting and
:80,96 uc
for uncommenting. What should I put in my ~/.vimrc?
I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 without a gui. I'd like to add a new keyboard shortcut to the system, but I've searched the forum, googled, read a couple of linux books and hunted through the man pages and I can't find anything explaining how to do it. I know that the '/etc/init' directory contains the file 'control-alt-delete.conf' for the 'ctrl-alt-del' shortcut, but looking at that file didn't give me any indication of how to create any new shortcuts. Surely there must be some way to add new keyboard shortcuts to a server system.
