OpenSUSE :: Create An Undeleteable Icon On Gnome Desktop?
Aug 11, 2011
I recently installed a Suse Studio build and trying to customize it. When I login as an ordinary user, there are 2 icons on Gnome desktop (or nautilus); Home and Trash. These appear to be undeleteable and I want an undeleteable Firefox icon on my desktop as well. When I create a Firefox shortcut; it can be deleted no matter what I do; i.e. giving read-only permissions or chown to root. So, I think these desktop icons are different than ordinary app

I want to insert a CD-ROM and have it automatically be mounted to someplace like /media/cdrom and create an icon on the Gnome desktop, while logged in as a non-root user under SLED 11.
How can I accomplish this?

I have just created an 11.3 64 bit image using susestudio. All seems well but would like to customize the desktop via my script that I have added. My question is how do I remove the home directory and the trash icon from the desktop? Or better said what is the path to removing the symbolic link, I cannot find the symbolic links in the desktop directory. It is empty, I do not see any symbolic links under /home/test/Desktop?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

I'm trying to create a web shortcut (desktop file) by dragging the icon from the Firefox address bar to a Thunar folder or desktop. This worked with older versions of Thunar and Firefox, but now that I'm running Xubuntu Natty (Firefox 5 and Thunar 1.2.1) it fails. Depending on the web site I try, it either creates a file containing the page's html instead of creating a .desktop shortcut file, or fails to create any file at all.

In these days I was doing some experiments: creating rpms of different programs by compiling directly the source code. Everything went well, every-time I was able to create a rpm and install it correctly, no errors no issues. Unfortunately I was not able to find the way to create in the menu (application tab) any quick launch icon. I was forced always to use the terminal and digit the correspondent command :wxmaxima,gnuplot, etc. I tried to look in the manuals but there wasn't anything useful.
By the way I am using Opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4.

It might be obvious, but I can't figure it out. I would have thought you can just right-click and an option would be there to add to desktop, but I only see add to favorites. What am I missing?

I switched from 11.2 to 11.4 yesterday. I noticed that the Appearance dialog has only three tabs instead of four tabs. The last tab "Interfaces" does not exist, in where I can select "Show Icon in Context Menu". But I do not know, how to show icons in context menu.

OpenSuSE 11.4 --- 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux So recently in the last couple of days my NetworkManager Icon has disappeared from the "System Tray" on the Taskbar, even after a reboot. I have tried doing: Alt+F2 then typing "nm-applet" and nothing happens. Also tried in the terminal typing "nm-applet" and I get:
Code:
# nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running. I am connected to the internet so I know it is working but how do I get the icon back? I would like to be able to switch between connection types (i.e. wlan0 or eth0 etc...) but can't do it without it (well easily anyway, probably could switch through the terminal but I would rather not). Also, on another note I remember earlier in the week reading a post that someone had the same problem, and they told him to Alt-F2 and type "nm-applet", which did work for me once but now it is not.
***And I do remember accidentally deleting something involving NetworkManager from the "Startup Applications" app. Can't remember exactly what it said but I do remember it had the word "-disable" at the end of the command. --> If anyone has NetworkManager icon in their system tray could you please look at your "Startup Applications" and tell me what the one for NetworkManager's command says?

I downloaded Eclipse and am trying to create a launcher for it in the main menu. I finally figured out that a .desktop file needed to be made in /usr/share/applications, but I can't get the icon to show up. For the "Icon" field in the .desktop file,tried giving an absolute path to an icon in my home folder, and I also tried putting the icon in all the folders under /usr/share/icons and just putting "eclipse" (the icon file name) as the valueI had copied this last from some of the existing .desktop files that worked, but still had no luck. Does anyone know how to do this?

I'm finally switching (slowly) from KDE3 to 4 (in 11.3). There are 2
things I so far haven't figured out:
1. How do I turn off the tooltips which appear when the mouse moves over
a desktop icon?
2. How can I assign a keyboard shortcut to minimize a window?

Just installed openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and not expert about it yet, I am experiencing two problems.
Skype: just installed 2.1.0.81-suse.i586rpm, starting it I get just the icon jumping on the desktop a bit and nothing else.
If I try with the command line, this is the result:
After that, I dont have preview about stored file images and even online, Google Images does not showing preview, just colored strips; if I go with the mouse on it, the image comes out.

I'm trying to add .desktop file for my application but I'm stuck with very strange problem.I created 48x48 icon for my program called etmmanager.png.I created .desktop file according to specifications:
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
X-SuSE-translate=true
Categories=Application;Utility;X-SuSE-TimeUtility;
Comment=ETM Manager for time logging
Exec=etmmanager
code....
My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.
It starts working if I specify absolute path in etmmanager.desktop file like
Code:
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/etmmanager.png
About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
