I was recently trying to install Ruby from source, due to needing and older version and having yum acting up on me. The problem is, the executable is being installed to /usr/local/bin instead of /usr/bin. I figure there's probably a way to change the install directory at some point during the configure/make/make install process, but there's no man page for these functions, and Google has not been kind.
Thus, my questions are twofold:
1) Does anyone have any good documentation (ideally, with examples/explanations) of command line parameters available for configure and make?
2) Failing that, can anyone tell me in specific how to install a source code's compiled executable to a specific directory?

I am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

I was wondering if there are any tools that automate the process of installing from source for example tar.gz or tar.bz2. I have used kludge installer but I am looking for something that doesn't make me install any dependencies for example I want a bash shell script it just runs the commands you normally do but faster.

I am having a problem installing a program, AudioTester v1.6 and tests FLACs for errors. [URL]. The .zip file has a windows executable '.exe' and the source code. The code was written for Windows. The source code is written in C++ (.cpp) with C header (.h) files, xml (.vcproj) and one '.exe.manifest'(?) file. I tried the usual commands for compiling (./configure, autogen, make) the source code but no luck. Can I compile this code for Ubuntu/linux? Is there anything I can do with the code? And If so what do I need to do.

A substantial proportion of the packages on my computer (yum list installed) are labelled as coming from the unstable rawhide repository. The rawhide repository is not currently enabled and never has been enabled as far as I can recall. How has this situation arisen and what can I do to ensure that packages are only installed from relatively stable repositories?

I'm new here and hope to profit from your immense linux knowledge and of course to share my own experience where I can.
I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.

I'm having problems with the ubuntu software center. When I try to install any software it does nothing when I click the install button. I can click on the visit website page and download the source and compile it manually but I was under the assumption that you could use the install button and it would do it automatically for you. Am I wrong? I am running UNR 9.10 on an Acer Aspire One 110-1588.

this Ubuntu software center comes with 100s of applications of all types.In this version they have disabled rating, making it hard to find how good it is.I found gnome-shell today, that seemed awesome. There are other ones, less well known, For eg, Abiword is far better than Open Office Org Word processor in many ways. (Altho' I dont like word processors themselves.)What are the other less well known applications that you use and like. One application per answer.

I have a karmic server and a separate karmic desktop (laptop). I want to run a few gui applications from the server to my desktop so they will be centralized. I can successfully ssh to my server from the laptop, but getting the gui stuff launched from the server to display on my laptop is where I am hitting a wall. I did:
$ ssh -Y knipknup@192.168.1.3
enter password
and I get:
/usr/bin/X11/xauth: error in locking authority file /home/knipknup/.Xauthority
I also did :
$ sudo chmod -v 777 /home/knipknup/.Xauthority
and that results in the same message.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I'm using the Gnome desktop (Ubuntu Classic) instead of Unity.
My problems is, when I launch certain applications, most of the time LibreOffice ones, Ubuntu desktop freezes.
When this happens the desktop becomes unresponsive to the keyboard. However the mouse pointer can still be moved around. Everything on the screen will freeze including panels and their items.
This happens only when an application launches.
I have already set up a shortcut key combination so that Ctrl + Alt + Backspace will perform a session restart. But when the above mentioned problem occurs, shortcut keys do not work (so I can't just do a session restart). So there's nothing to do other than restarting the laptop by holding the power button down.

I just recently Ubuntu 9.10 and have never used Linux at all before. I was wondering, all the links and tips and everything tell me to use Ubuntu Software Center. I haven't had a chance to actually go to the Software Center yet but does it require an internet connection to install software or can I download the tar.gz / tar.bz2 files from sources such as Softpedia.com and still install them using Software Center without a Internet Connection?
