I was attempting to create a cube desktop via compizconfig-settings-manager everything crashed. I can bring up a terminal via ctrl alt F1 or get to the Internet by right clicking on screen and change desktop background get more backgrounds on line. Other than that I can not see nor get any icons or make changes.i have Ubuntu 11.04

I have checked to make sure python-rsvg is installed. Upon looking for a solution, I read somewhere that it might have something to do with Compiz. Whenever I tick boxes it doesn't save anything after closing. When I clicked on Advanced Search it froze (twice) after showing a progress bar. I got this error when clicking on preferences:

By default nothing is ticked but I think there are some effects already enabled on my system.

Also, in 11.04 there's a "feature" where if I drag the title bar of a window against the top of the screen, it expands sideways. How do I disable that? I'm guessing I do it in CCSM.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite, Intel graphics card, a few days ago, and had no trouble accessing the CompizConfig Settings Manager. I changed a number of settings, and everything seemed to be working just fine. But two days ago, I noticed that the compiz effects (rotating desktop cube, minimize effect etc.) were gone; and when I now try to access the Settings Manager, I see a "Starting CompizConfig..." appear in the panel and linger for about five seconds; then it's gone. No settings manager, no error message.
The day that happened, I had (to the best of my memory) not installed any updates. I had, however, removed a bunch of applications through the Software Center. I had also launched Ubuntu Tweak and changed a couple of settings. The only option it showed, and shows, under 'Compiz Settings' was then (and still is): "Prerequisite Conditions" : "Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings Manager". The box was checked. I have since unchecked and re-checked it, thereby uninstalling and re-installing the settings manager. But that hasn't changed anything.

Just got my 11.04 and tried to use some settings in Compiz. I`ve made these steps: Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) application from the Software Center. If you need assistance with installing the application, consult the software installation help, or review the Ubuntu Software Center Manual.
After you have installed the program, click the power icon at the very right of the panel and select System Settings. In the Personal section, click CompizConfig Settings Manager. In the Desktop section of the CompizConfig Settings Manager, click Ubuntu Unity Plugin, and select the Experimental tab.
I`ve clicked on the left side there was something like "enable plugin" or sort of. And my launcher, and the pane on the top dissapeared! I got nothing. Just the screen. Nothing is workin. What the f>..?
I like everyone else posing in this forum am trying to reconcile with 11.04. Everytime I adjust a setting in the CompizConfig Settings Manager, the top unity bar wigs out and disappears, it is still clickable but its invisible. Is there any simple fix to this? I don't think it's my hardware because other people are getting this too. I really don't like restarting/logging off my computer everytime I make a compiz change.

If I have multiple windows open, and my cursor is moved off the main window (but the focus is unchanged - i.e. I did not click off the main window), the main window will become transparent. At first I thought this was a cool effect, now it just gets on my nerves. I have looked through CompizConfig Settings, I can not find the relevant effect to turn off.

I've read several tutorials and they all say to go to my CompizConfig Settings and go to the Utilities section, under which you will find Wallpaper. I went there and can not find it. I can't right click on my desktop either for some reason. Ran a quick search and I couldn't find anything in the forums.

I saw a compizconfig video on ....., I forgot what it was, but I saw that they were running a video full screen and switched desktops or work areas and when they went back the video was still full screen.
Right now if I do a video full screen and switch to another desktop and come back to the video one, it is back to the window size before full screened.
How can I accomplish for my video to remain full screen even if i switch desktops?
I am a newbie and loving Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. I have my cube working great with all the associated effects yet after about 20 minutes or so, the cube options are all unchecked and I no longer have the cube. What could be causing this? Initially I thought it was only after reboot but I left the house today for 20 minutes and when I came back I had no box and sure enough the cube options were unchecked.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop and installed the AMD restricted drivers (Radeon HD 5770). I installed compizconfig-settings-manager and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra. All of the plugins have worked fine so far. However, while "Cube Reflection and Deformation" works, I cannot change the settings. Specifically, I tried changing the cube caps from the visually irritating logos to which it defaults to plain white, but the logos stayed. I also tried removing the annoying "Reflection" option, but to no avail.
I soon discovered that none of my settings would apply to the plugin, although they would display as though they were applied in the settings manager. Changing the settings in other plugins, like "Desktop Cube," works fine. So far, I am sticking just with the "Desktop Cube," "Rotate Cube," and "3D Windows" plugins, but I would really like that cylinder. And I have used Compiz, including the deformation plugin, for years with no difficulty.
I have Ubuntu 11.04 and I am running it on Ubuntu classic due to not caring for Unity very much. I have an Acer Aspire 5739 and a Nvidia GEForce GT 130M graphics card. Is there any way to have a 3D desktop cube again?
I have read many posts on here and else where and still have not managed to get it working. (I am fairly new to Linux btw so just try to keep that in mind when replying)

- No 3D cube. Installed related compiz software, adjusted settings, ticked cubes etc. Not a peep.
- No direct desktop access. Only via side icons. Just find it fiddly re: using desktop and changing background via side icons.

I was just experimenting with compiz effects on Natty 11.04, and when I clicked desktop cube (which I'm assuming you're not supposed to do, haha), my compiz broke. The pop up windows are way at the top of the screen, almost out of view, and the windows lack the close, minimize, and maximize buttons. I tried reinstalling all the compiz plugins, and when I rebooted I had the same problem! I am using metacity right now, but I would be very sad if i was stuck with it.

I ended up disabling services, i think "largedesktop" and enabling others like OpenGL and composite. Anyway, unity no longer works including the bar above and the icons to the left. View 9 Replies View Relatedi was looking at videos and saw some demonstration of desktop-environment. one demonstration was of an ubuntu with something called atlantic desktop. it is an transparent 3d cube with swimming fishes inside the cube and in the background. i go into comfiz-fusion web-page and there i could read that its not a plugin, but a part of atlantic screensaver that come original with kde4-screensaver-extra, but in my opensuse 11.1 kde4.22 i cant find this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.
But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.
how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.
I just upgraded to unity and everything is fine. Then I accidentally enabled Desktop Cube and Cube Rotation. Suddenly, the top part of windows that you normally use to drag the window or close it etc. started disappearing. In a panic, I rebooted. Upon reboot I found myself in an even bigger mess than I could have imagined. Not only did this fail to fix the problem previously mentioned, it also caused the sidebar and the ubuntu bar at the top to disappear. Desktop icons still show, and my cursor is fully functional, but other than that, my system is unusable.
