Debian :: How To Create Or Transfer Folder Icons To Desktop
Jul 8, 2015
I have just begun using Debian Kwheezy and I'm also a newbie to Linux. My question is, how do I create or transfer folder icons to the desktop? Kwheezy's way isn't the same as most distros I've used.
I'm using debian squeeze in my netbook and I'm not familiarized with KDE4 (4.4, the one in squeeze) and I wanted to know: how can I create desktop shortcuts?the desktop shortcuts, are they files stored in some place, or are they all part of the plasmoiddesktop activity"? if so, how can I create a generic desktop shortcut with it's own command and icon?BTW, how can I save the "desktop activity" i currently have, so if I accidentaly click delete desktop activity in the menu I can have all my icons and wallpaper back?
I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place
I mistakenly moved the /home/user/Desktop file to another location so now when my desktop starts it used the entire contents of my /home/user/ directory (except for the hidden contents) to create icons all over my desktop. I have restored the Desktop folder to the correct location but it ignores it now and continues to show every file under /home/user as an icon.
How do I reset it to point to the original Desktop folder? (Using 64-bit Ubuntu)
this is posable but am trying to do this "Create folder from a filename and move the file into the folder" i have 500000+ file's i need to do with is there a easy way?I really don't want to download them all make/move them with filemonkey just to re-upload them
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
I'm now using RHEL5 and I've noticed that when right-clicking in the desktop, the option at the top of the menu list is Create Folder. Is there any way I can change this option to Open Terminal
I've spent over hour researching how to make a simple desktop icon, but cannot seem to do it.I installed gnome-tweak-tool, and turned on the setting to "have file manager handle desktop", which put the computer and trash icons on there, but I cannot find any way to simply add a shortcut/launcher for iceweasel. I've seriously read 20 pages and watched multiple youtube videos on this gnome-tweak-tool, and still haven't succeeded in this simple task of making a desktop icon
When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.
I have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.
Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective. It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.
All of my folder icons changed to the Downloads icon, even new folders have the wrong default.Anyone know how to fix this? The places icons I had to change manually
i'm trying to make a folder on fat32 partition named NEW by typing in console mkdir NEW, then i open PCMan file manager then go to that folder at first the folder name was NEW but after i doubleclick it and go back the folder name was changed to 'new'then i tried to rename it to NEW but it says file exist then i tried to rename it to 'not new' (this time inside PCMan) and it work then i rename it again to NEW, go into that folder and go back again... the folder name changed to 'new' again.anyone know why this happen?? this doesn't happen if i make the folder name more than one word such as 'NEW NEW'
I was wondering what the reason was for disabling a feature like - creating new documents and files on desktop - by default?
If someone installs debian with desktop environment this user probably also want to use the desktop as a workplace, so why is that not a default setting?
But also in general i dont get it, i dont see any reason, why this is disabled.
EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.
If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?
I'm new to ubuntu and want to install stepmania so i downloaded the binary, i want to put the files in the /opt/ directory, the only problem is i cant create a new folder, i tried dragging a ready-made file into it but it just says "you do not have the permissions to file:///opt/" Im soo sad i wanna play my sM NOW!
when I turned on my desktop workstation, I found that Desktop icons have disappeared and I can't right-clik the Desktop , aning found any option on desktop like Application,Places and system
I have a feeling that there is no answer to this issue but I'll try.I have an rsync server running. If I rename a folder, rsync will re-transfer all the files under that folder. Does anyone know if there's any automated way around this ?
Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:
I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?
How to fix the icons on home folder? Changing icons not changing these icons but everything else. as you can see below icons inside folders are changing but not the home folder ones.
