OpenSUSE Install :: Create USB Boot Drive (like The Old Boot Floppies)?
Sep 29, 2010I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).
I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).

I cannot seem to get ms-sys installed to create a boot record. I download the newest stable build from Sourceforge, navigate to the directory, and execute the make command. After that it says to issue the install command, and it quits with errors.

Software :: Create A Multi Boot Usb Flash Drive That Has Two Iso's
Jan 19, 2010I'm trying to create a multi boot usb flash drive that has two iso's one with a Oracle (redhat) 5 update 3 32 bit install DVD and one with the 64 bit DVD. I've been searching for awhile and it looks like pendrivelinux.com had the easiest that just throws a grub boot loader on the usb with a menu.lst. Of course like most utilities there are no examples for any redhat on there and seeing how I'm not booting to an iso of an install i'm trying to boot to the install dvd i'm not having very much luck. Any thoughts of how my menu.lst entries should look. Or if you have an easier way let me know. I'd like to stick with ISO as anytime we update to a newer version i can just swap iso's. Here's an example they have in their for ubuntu. Obviously things like the .iso and vmlinuz location i've got but all that stuff after the vmlinux i'm clueless on.

Jun 11, 2011Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

I made few days ago one .iso image, but without cd drive i can not run it (has copyright protection).
The only thing i can do now is to copy cd data. But can i make from this cd folder some virtual cd image in ubuntu, which i could transform into .iso image (using alcohol 52% in xp to avoid copy protection and enable to use it without cd drive)?

Jul 28, 2010I'm getting 'File is broken' messages while trying to set up Ubuntu 10.04 on 4GB flash drive. Following instructions on [URL] I downloaded Ubuntu Desktop Edition - 32bit version. It shows up as:
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso size on disk 542 MB (568,475,648 bytes)
I downloaded and ran the Universal USB Installer. It shows up as:
Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.4.exe size on disk 816 KB (835,584 bytes)
I get 56 7-zip Diagnostic messages. A small sample shows:

I have a NAS and Ubuntu 10.x I like to make a shortcut from a folder on the NAS drive to the desktop.
If i right click on the file and click 'Make Link' it tells me that the target does not support symbolic links.
So what can I do to make it happen?
is there maybe a way so mount the NAS like a fixed system disk? Because from the system disc I am able to make links.

i tried to create a pen drive for all separate ones of the using unetbootin' and none worked except natty
i installed image writer which doesn't recognize any of my iso's when i browse my filesystem the folder they're in is just empty
i've tried the multicd.sh script to create a multiboot dvd so i don't have to create 5 different cds but when i execute it it just lists memtest where its supposed to list all the .iso's in the folder (yes i renamed them all simple as per instructions...
and then the multibootusb which only recognized openSUSE and when it was done i couldn't boot off it
my pendrive only works at booting for ubuntu?
do i have to write 5 cd's just to experiment

Jun 23, 2011I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.
I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.
I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.

Mar 20, 2010I have minor problem with upgrading a hard drive. I am running an old pentium lll with two hard drives. On the first hard drive I have two partitions of around 90GB each. On the first partition is installed winXP and on the second partition I have Suse 10.3, both booted by grub and living happily side by side. My second hard drive (which is formatted for windows is only 4GB.
My problem arises when I try to replace the 4GB with a 80Gb hard drive. When I disconnect the 4GB drive the system fails to boot up and complains with error 21.

Mar 4, 2010I'm installing Ubuntu to be used as an NFS storage server for my VMWare ESX servers. I've got a server that has two 2TB drives in it. The hardware raid controller isn't an option because it only sees up to 1TB of each drive. So, I'm trying to figure out to do this using either LVM or Parted. I don't know much about doing this, and LVM was the first thing I tried but it didn't seem to do much. It looks like it just created a smaller partition to install Ubuntu on. It didn't ask me what I wanted to do with the rest of the drive space. I've messed around with Parted and am not sure what to do, to be honest. I found a few blog posts but most started off assuming that I knew how to get to where they were starting from.
It's just two drives, /dev/sda /dev/sdb
