Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Pen Drive For All Separate Ones Of The Using Unetbootin

Mar 29, 2011

I'm trying out some other distros i have fedora, openSUSE, natty (wanna check out gnome3), and debian

i tried to create a pen drive for all separate ones of the using unetbootin' and none worked except natty

i installed image writer which doesn't recognize any of my iso's when i browse my filesystem the folder they're in is just empty

i've tried the multicd.sh script to create a multiboot dvd so i don't have to create 5 different cds but when i execute it it just lists memtest where its supposed to list all the .iso's in the folder (yes i renamed them all simple as per instructions...

and then the multibootusb which only recognized openSUSE and when it was done i couldn't boot off it

my pendrive only works at booting for ubuntu?

do i have to write 5 cd's just to experiment

i also tried

dd if=suse.iso of=/dev/scd1 bs=4m

Software :: Unetbootin Failing To Create Bootable Drive?

Sep 22, 2010

i have a Sandisk 5gig USB key that had mint 9 live on it that i was hoping to get an old brotasaurus (Dell Latitude D510) up and running again with. apparently Mint is too pretty for the beast and so I tried to get mint Fluxbox to install on to the key, then i tried Fedora, and finaly i tried DSL. Unetbootin seems to have stoped making the key bootable as three of my laps seem unable to read it.

[Update] so i tried dd'ing the iso to the usb following the instructions on the suse site

# umount /dev/sdb1
# dd if=/home/Derf/Downloads/dsl-4.4.10.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=4M;sync
and it is still failing to create a bootable usb. says

General :: Keeping New Ubuntu Installation's /var On Separate Drive Without Formatting

Oct 11, 2010

I have a server running an older version of Ubuntu and with /var stored on a separate partition on a separate hard drive. I am attempting to update Ubuntu to 10.04, but I still want to store /var on a separate partition and hard drive. However, I don't want to format the drive which currently contains /var, as it has important data.

Is there some way to have 10.04 set up the new /var on this separate drive at installation, without formatting the drive and losing the old /var?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Into Os X After Clean Install Of 10.4 On A Separate Drive

May 18, 2010

The hardware is a psystar box with 2 drives for os x and ubuntu respectively. I attempted install of ubuntu over older version of xubunut without physically disconnecting the os x drive After install I could not boot into either system. THEN I remembered something about the install problem that 10.4 has and installed ubuntu again, this time following the instruction regarding booloader install. Now I can boot ubunut fine, but of course when I select drive holing os x it hangs on 'Verifying DMI pool data....' I've been looking at some thread on here about dual boot problems with Win7 and such, but are any of the recommended diagnostic and repair steps relevant to my case, specifically testdisk and bootinfo scripts?

General :: Mounting The Hard Drive From Unetbootin?

Jul 29, 2010

I recently installed Damn Small Linux using unetbootin. Booting Linux from unetbootin seems a lot like booting from a liveCD, so I'd like to mount my hard drive and see what I can do. Unfortunately it looks like Damn Small Linux has not mounted it automatically, and I'm having trouble finding my drive and mounting it from the /dev directory. There are several devices named /dev/*da* and I don't know which is my hard drive. My computer is an HP Mini netbook, so the drive is probably one of the new "solid state" drives if that affects anything. What can I do to find and mount my hard drive from unetbootin?

Ubuntu Installation :: Separate Hard Drive Keeping Current GRUB?

I'd like to install Lucid on a spare hard drive I have, so I can do my bit for testing it. I have a feeling that if I just burn the latest alpha .iso and install from that, it will replace my current GRUB, whereas I would prefer to simply add the Lucid install as an option in my current GRUB.

Of course I might be wrong, I just wanted to check before I went ahead with it. I was unable to find the info I needed via searching.

Also, if it is possible, I will need instructions to remove a user as well, so in the future I decide which one I like better, I can delete the other user account.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unetbootin LiveCD Image Onto HDD?

Oct 27, 2010

My old HDD died. I have 10.10 installed on a usb stick. This is a full installation not a LiveCD. I downloaded the live CD and Unetbootin.

Can I use unetbootin to create a bootable 'LiveCD' onto a partition of my new hard drive?

Without a CD drive, I can't think of any other way to get an installation onto my new HDD

EDIT - got ubuntu installed but had to do it at work, so i am still curious as how one would proceed with only a USB (full installation) and a blank HDD with no access to any other computers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Create Separate Partition For Windows?

Feb 26, 2011

using Opensuse 11.3, I have used Ubuntu 9.10 in the past and have had a blast with Linux. I have to rehash some of my old skills that I have forgotten in the past several years..I installed 11.3, everything is working fine. However, I just releazed that after I installed it, I used my whole partition (Not Windows 7, or I would've been in hell). My Windows 7 is in Raid 0. My second HDD is 1 TB and 11.3 is on there. So, how can I trim down let's say 100 GB and just give the rest to Windows (800gbs). I need that much because I do editing for videos, etc. So, once again, how can I trim my partition and use it for Windows 7.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using UNetbootin To Install Netbook Remix (Lucid) On Toshiba NB205?

Apr 30, 2010

I have tried using UNetbootin to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Toshiba NB205 and am having no luck. Both it and Kubuntu NR will boot from live USB and seemingly install successfully, but when I select the Ubuntu option, it hangs and drops me down to BusyBox with initramfs.

When UNR was distributed as a .img file, I could use Canonical's USB image .exe to prepare the USB drive and it always worked like a charm, but now UNetbootin fails me all too often. I don't really have access to another Ubuntu box to run usb-creator with, so has anyone had any success with any other install method? I am dual booting with Windows 7.

After struggling and googling on the internet I can't manage it to work.I have stup rsyslog to receive the logging from my firewall and it puts it into the syslog file.ut I would like to have a separate logfile for these messages.I have created the firwall.log file with owner syslog, same as for the syslog file.I already have tried to use in the /etc/rsyslog.d/10-firewall.conf the following ::msg, contains, "firewalld" /var/log/firewall.logor
:msg, contains, "firewalld" -/var/log/firewall.logI don't know the difference between the "-" sign in the lines but I have seen also those kind of situations.

I also have put this line into the 50-default.conf file because I thought it wasn't seeing the 10-firewall.conf file but no work.I have added a $template HostMessages, "/var/log/%HOSTNAME%/logfile.log" in the /etc/rsyslog.conf file but neither it works. In the firewall I can see the Syslog facility is now on LOG_LOCAL0 and I can change it from LOCAL0, LOCAL1, LOCAL2, ... until LOCAL7What does these different numbers mean

Ubuntu Security :: Desire - Create A Bash Script That Launches Skype Under A Separate User Account?

The thing is this -- thousands of Linux guys run Skype, but Skype is hardly ever updated or have security patches, and we run it all the time. It seems like an easy avenue for an exploit. As well, my iptables firew all blocks input connections that I have not established, but Skype is an established connection. How do I create a Bash script that launches Skype under a separate user account?
