Debian Multimedia :: How To Create A USB Drive With Windows
Mar 6, 2011
I'm trying to use the VirtualBox OSE for some windows programs and i'm using a netbook with Debian Linux Squeeze. I haven't found anything on how to create a USB drive with windows using debian to create the disk. Does anyone know anything and or have a good website that would hopefully be useful or program?

I am trying to create a boot-able flash drive of Windows 7. I have the .iso and the flash drive.[URL].That article covers the creation process rather well, however i have one problem. I cannot seem to get ms-sys installed to create a boot record. I download the newest stable build from Sourceforge, navigate to the directory, and execute the make command. After that it says to issue the install command, and it quits with errors.
[Code]...
I'm still quite new to Linux. What could I be doing wrong?

I was wondering. Up till now whenever I installed Linux I've either dual booted with Windows off 1 HDD, or installed straight Linux by itself. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?
I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.

I have one cd program, but the cd is corrupted (tried to make backup copy in windows xp with alcohol 52%, but got error at about 95%, and i can not use this cd any more in xp - only for few minutes, then it stops...)
I made few days ago one .iso image, but without cd drive i can not run it (has copyright protection).
The only thing i can do now is to copy cd data. But can i make from this cd folder some virtual cd image in ubuntu, which i could transform into .iso image (using alcohol 52% in xp to avoid copy protection and enable to use it without cd drive)?

Yes, I know, I know, there are lots of instructions out there on how to create a persistent Linux USB drive. However, I've been having a really hard time finding if it's possible to create the WHOLE thing persistent. For example, I want to turn my 8 GB thumb drive into a portable Debian Squeeze where I can install (persistent) apps and make root-level changes to the filesystem. Is this possible?

I wish to use my laptop to create a system for my Soekris 4801. I don't want to take the server down for the lengthy install ( took 6 hours last time, Fedora 5 ). I want to create the image on a USB drive for the 586 Soekris server on my 686 HP laptop. Then scp the image to the Soekris and reboot and configure the server.

I have a customized XP installation disk created for my company. However, my office does not require several of the applications that are installed by default. Also, some configuration settings are incorrect. I have extracted the XP installation files and can perform an install using those files from a running system, but I cannot boot from the CD.
I have tried just about every suggestion I can find on the net except purchasing a third-party burning application to do this. I tried burning both CDs and DVDs using floppy boot images, but XP will not install in a "DOS environment". I've also tried ripping the boot sector directly from a bootable CD/DVD and using that without success. Finally, I ripped ISO images and tried ripping the boot sector from those, also without success. I've also tried various file system type settings in K3b, including Joliet, Linux/Windows, UDF, and DOS compatible, all without success. Surely there must be a way to do this?
PS--I tried posting this to the K3b mailing list first but was rejected, even after creating an account with Sourceforge!? Didn't want to have to submit a support request just to submit a support request.

I was wondering what the reason was for disabling a feature like - creating new documents and files on desktop - by default?
If someone installs debian with desktop environment this user probably also want to use the desktop as a workplace, so why is that not a default setting?
But also in general i dont get it, i dont see any reason, why this is disabled.

Can anyone actually create an account with Evolution in Squeeze? The "Evolution Setup Assistant" won't take me past the "Importing files" dialog. When I press the Forward button, nothing happens. This is what I get when I press the forward button (running from a terminal): (evolution:9945): Gtk-CRITICAL **: Page flow is broken, you may want to end it with a page of type GTK_ASSISTANT_PAGE_CONFIRM or GTK_ASSISTANT_PAGE_SUMMARY

So I made a text file on a windows machine and brought it home on a flashdrive. When I opened it in PCMan File manager it did not show, but executing ls in a terminal shows the text file just fine. It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. I've had a similar problem going the other direction (Linux to Windows, but with pdfs) many months ago. here is ls -l

I have a server set up with Samba. On the desktop side I use KDE. I can clearly track intensive smbd activity, being the first on the iotop results page. Another thing is that after reading from the server's HDD, it seems to write on the desktop's SSD. It does this intermittently.I really want to know how can I stop this. It's very annoying and I bet I don't need it since, using previous versions of Debian, I could go well without this activity.

I tried to burn a cd today and k3b told me it couldn't find an optical device. It suggested making sure HAL was running, it is. Nothing has changed except auto upgrades, so I tried an apt-get upgrade to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. Burning has never been an issue before, and googling all day hasn't provided any answers, apart from finding /etc/init.d/hal The permissions haven't been changed.
