Ubuntu :: Create ISO Of Just The Contents Of A Hard Drive
May 5, 2011
I've been using the command
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
to copy my hard drives contents completely to another hard drive. However I need a way to copy just the files on one partition. I don't want the entire partition copied, just the files. I need the code to output them in to an ISO,

Recently, Ubuntu was doing a standard update. It got stuck in some kind of strange loop. So i put the boot disk in cleared the master drive and reinstalled ububtu 10.4. I have a backup 500gb drive that use to keep the contents of my important information for my fileserver. After the completed install and found the backup drive STILL named "FILESERVER" and still has my folders aka: our pictures, our music, and our video. I opened them up and they're all empty. Am I missing some informaton? I swear i didn't format the drive. I couldn't have since the folders are still there. Where are all my files at?

I have Intel Pentium3 motherboard model 845GVSR with 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD ROM and 4 USB slots but no Floppy Drive. My PC was working fine until I deleted the contents of hard drive accidentally using trial version of killer software.I ried to install Linux by making a boot-able CD, but it did not work. Then i tried to make a boot-able USB using Universal Notebook Installer, it did not work either. I just get the Error " Error loading operating system. Then I tried a free software from net by the name James Format Tools - DOS on USB. Using this computer did boot but DOS did not install and I got the error message "invalid drive specification".I understand that now I will have to write boot sector afresh and will have to Format the hard drive,, but how to do this as all my attempts to get to the hard drive failed

I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.
I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.
I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.

I've performed a clean install of Linux on my system, and would like to create a snapshot of my whole disk so that I can go back to a fresh state immediately.
I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?

The motherboard currently installed on my PC has a RAID Utility (Ctrl+I) at the startup that allow creating RAID1. But I already have a system installed with CentOS 5.4. In order to protect my data, I need RAID1. Can I add another Hard Drive now and have the data mirrored and synced onto both hard drives as if it was in RAID1 right from the beginning?

I have a dell inspiron 9300. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.on't have the root password.Something I'd like to do would be to have two separate ubuntu's on my computer. I'd like to keep this one just as it is but also have another ubuntu-same version- that I can boot up into, and have it default booting up into the old one. How exactly do I do this? I know very little about computers. I barely mastered registration for this site, and copy/paste is a rather new skill for me.

Used gparted to format a brand new iomega prestige 1 tb usb hard drive (ntfs) to ext4. The problem is that I can't create folders from nautilus because I don't have permission (root). There is one folder present already lost + found that appeared after reformatting. i can't access that folder because of permissions. Was any of this supposed to happen after formatting an external drive and how can I fix this? I intend to use grsync to back up important folders but can't create folders from grsync also. The only account on ubuntu is mine and i have access to root privileges.

I was trying to create a partition on my hard drive on Linux using the GParted program. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have
/dev/sdb1 478711768 137858256 316536328 31% /
/dev/sda1 101089 15346 80524 17% /boot
Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive. If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I was wondering if there would be a way for me to copy the contents of a shared folder that's running on an XP system using shell script. Actually, there are two shared folders that I want to do this with. I want to be able to launch the script and automatically copy all the contents of each folder into two separate folders on my ubuntu desktop. For example;
Lets say that I have Shared Folders A1 and A2 on my networked XP system and I have Folders B1 and B2 on my Ubuntu desktop. I want the script to automatically copy the contents of A1 into B1 and likewise for A2 and B2. During the copying, I want the script set up such that any pre-existing files in the B1 & B2 folders will automatically get overwritten by the ones copied from A1 & A2.Is there any possibilities of me achieving this?

I need help to do a program that emulates the following shell command line:"sort </etc/passwd | less".Using a socket in a connection-oriented setup.First the contents of the file /etc/password are being fed into the sort program. The sort program is then sorting the contents of the file and sending it to another programm called less. Less is paging the results so that you can see one page of the results at a time.I know that i can solve the problem this way:
1. Create a server program that will stream the contents of a file to any client that connects to it
2. Create a client application that will connect to the server and download the contents of the file. The program should then sort the file. After sorting the file the client should connect to the "less" program and send the sorted results
3. Create a server program that will listen for connections and download whatever is sent to it. It will then display that data one page at a time.
