Feb 17, 2011I am trying to create a boot-able flash drive of Windows 7. I have the .iso and the flash drive.[URL].That article covers the creation process rather well, however i have one problem. I cannot seem to get ms-sys installed to create a boot record. I download the newest stable build from Sourceforge, navigate to the directory, and execute the make command. After that it says to issue the install command, and it quits with errors.

Sep 29, 2010I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP installed, and for various reasons (Help: I borked my WindowsXP boot when installing OpenSUSE 11.3) I can not install a GRUB boot loader to the first hard drive (hd0).
I currently have a second hard drive in this laptop with a perfectly working OpenSUSE 11.3 instance, but no way to boot into it. I remember back in ancient times, a common option with Linux distros was to create a boot floppy to boot into Linux rather than installing GRUB or LILO to MBR. Since this laptop doesn't have a floppy drive I'd like to do the same thing with a USB stick. Is there any way to install GRUB (or something similar) to a USB stick? What I am not asking here is whether I can put a full, bootable Linux instance on a USB drive - I only want a boot loader on USB that launches to the appropriate mount point on (hd1).

Jan 19, 2010I'm trying to create a multi boot usb flash drive that has two iso's one with a Oracle (redhat) 5 update 3 32 bit install DVD and one with the 64 bit DVD. I've been searching for awhile and it looks like pendrivelinux.com had the easiest that just throws a grub boot loader on the usb with a menu.lst. Of course like most utilities there are no examples for any redhat on there and seeing how I'm not booting to an iso of an install i'm trying to boot to the install dvd i'm not having very much luck. Any thoughts of how my menu.lst entries should look. Or if you have an easier way let me know. I'd like to stick with ISO as anytime we update to a newer version i can just swap iso's. Here's an example they have in their for ubuntu. Obviously things like the .iso and vmlinuz location i've got but all that stuff after the vmlinux i'm clueless on.

Aug 2, 2011So Ubuntu needs to go so I booted onto a live CD of Ubuntu and used Gparted to delete every one of my linux partitions. I created a ntfs partition, will windows boot on this. When i tried it before it said didn't recognize file system so I deleted the linux file system and created a ntfs one. Is that all?

May 5, 2011I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu or Linux Mint.
In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.
how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).
fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create Samba File Share To Windows Domain Clients?
Apr 28, 2010I feel ashamed for even asking this, since it seems like there's about 3 samba questions here every day. However after an hour of searching, I keep finding strange variants that aren't what I need.
My Goal: Create a single file share on an Ubuntu Server - share it via samba to Windows clients that are on a domain with active directory. It sure would be nice if AD authentication would work - so users don't have to type in a linux user/passsword each time they want to access the share.
In my adventures, I've found the following items (which may overlap)
1. Joining the server to a Windows Domain
2. Turning the server into a Windows Domain Controller
3. Authentication with LDAP (still not quite sure how/what this would do)
4. Stuff with Kerberos
5. Lots of people bickering about Samba 3/4 & how it's impossible to make Samba a PDC.
I'm not sure if I need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller or not...all I want to do is create a file share and share it on the domain...I don't need to make the ubuntu server a domain controller for that, right? Maybe just a member? Maybe nothing at all?
I guess if I want to authenticate stuff correctly (or forward authentication requests? Not sure), I probably need to join the ubuntu server to the domain...I think.
But let's say I do join it to the domain...then how to I create a file share that is authenticated via active directory rather than a local ubuntu server account? I see a dozen guides on joining the server to the domain, but nobody ever mentions sharing the folder over the domain.
The lines are also blurred between joining Ubuntu to the domain and making it a domain controller. What should I keep an eye out to avoid in these tutorials?
I get lost between the Kerberos/LDAP/Samba/WinBind etc...and I have a feeling I don't need all of these for something this simple.

Nov 23, 2010I'm trying to create a Linux instance on a Windows 7 PC and use dual-boot. I have created 64GB of space for Linux. Is this enough? When I boot from the live DVD and go through the setup, I get stuck setting up the unassigned space as a linux partition. I don't understand what the setup is trying to tell me and I'm afraid I'll wipe out Windows 7. The message I get says there isn't enough space even though the unassigned available area is 64GB. I am very timid about following what Yast2 is telling me because to my untrained eye it appears the setup wants to use my entire hard drive. Where can I find more information about the disk setup section of the installation process?

Sep 2, 2010I have a system with two drives, sda and sdb. Ubuntu 10.04 is installed on sda and Windows 7 is installed on sdb. I _can_ boot both Ubuntu and Windows if I change the boot order in the bios, however, when I try to boot the default Windows entry from the grub menu, the screen simply goes blank for a couple seconds and then I am once again presented with the grub menu. When I try to boot any of the "fixes" I found online I get, "error: invalid signature." Below is the default /boot/grub/grub.cfg along with 6 of the "fixes" I have found via google and ubuntuforums, and my dmesg.

Q1) I was wondering if it is possible to Dual boot Ubuntu with Windows XP on a 1TB RAID-0 setup ?
Q2) Also, is it possible to create a SWAP partition (for Ubuntu) on a NON RAID-0 HDD ?
Q3) Lastly... I read GRUB2 is the default boot manager... should I use that, or GRUB / Lio ?
I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.
This is my 1st time dual booting XP with Ubuntu.

General :: Unable To Create Boot CD With Kickstart File
Mar 18, 2010I'm unable to create a linux boot cd with a kickstart file. I have a working kickstart file and a working boot image (tested by booting using the network for the kickstart file), but I can't seem to put them both on the DVD.
Here are the steps I took
1. mount the *.iso file to /mnt/isosetups
2. Recursively copy all the files from /mnt/isosetups to /mnt/bootcd
3. removing /mnt/bootcd/isolinux/boot.cat
4. running the mkisofx command (used -c to recreate boot.cat)
5. put the new image on a windows box and burned to a dvd using roxio
The result was that I could enter the red hat boot menu but the server couldn't find the boot image on the cd. I could go into more detail about what commands I entered, my environment, what I tested, etc.

May 30, 2010I downloaded damn small linux to a CD; consisted of an index file and a .iso file. I'm trying to boot my Windows XP PC from the CD RW drive; have changed the bios settings to put USB CD in first position at boot config screen. Also tried another option that seemed to refer to CD RW drive, and put that in first position. my PC keeps starting up Win XP - I do hear the CD RW drive cranking away at startup, but that's it.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

May 3, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an external hard drive (USB connected) and I can no longer boot my Windows XP(SP3) from my internal C Drive. Grub gives me the list of boot choices, but when I choose the C drive, I just get these error messages:
