Ubuntu :: Create A Hard Drive Image That Just Load Up?
Jun 23, 2011I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.
I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.
I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.
General :: Create An Image Of Hard Drive?
Jun 14, 2011I've performed a clean install of Linux on my system, and would like to create a snapshot of my whole disk so that I can go back to a fresh state immediately.
I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?

Jan 5, 2010After I burn the DVD image, I put the disc on the computer and boot. The installation screen appears, the acknowledgement screen appears, then the installation checks my system and gives me a yast window with an error about something related to URLs and repositories. I cannot continue with the installation.
I am 100% new at this and thought it would be as easy as installing ubuntu (which I installed on a laptop and works flawlessly).I am trying distros and opensuse is compatible with my video card right out of the box apparently, so that's why I chose it for my desktop.Do I need to copy the dvd image to the hard disk of the computer I want to install opensuse on, and use the dvd to boot as well?

Jul 13, 2011I am pretty much a noob when it comes to Linux. But I desperately need to do exactly what the title of this thread says.I have this ISO file which is a bootable CD image. But instead of booting off of a CD, I want to boot from a USB flash drive. I understand that I can't simply just burn it with ImgBurn or whatever, and then just drag and drop the files and folder to a USB flash drive. Because hidden files, bootloader, etc. would not be visible and not copied. I know I'm in for some special software in order to copy every single byte from that ISO image to my USB flash drive.
I did try extracting the ISO with PeaZip (7-zip based) under Windows Vista, but that didn't work out very well. It resulted in a few files and folders, totaling in at about 2 KB, while the source ISO file is actually some 50 MB. WinRAR, on the other hand, would simply just create an empty folder where to put the files (no files created/extracted), flash before my eyes and call it a day ("complete").I have learned from other posters on other forums that there is this Unilx program/command called DD. How can I use DD to accomplish this task?

According to my google searches, I need to run ubuntu from a live cd, then in a partitioning program copy the ubuntu partition to the new one, then resize it. Is that all? Do I need a linuxswap partition on the new hard drive? I have been using kde partition manager to arrange my new partitions. On one hard drive I have the partition I want to install ubuntu on(what type should this be? ext4?) and a partition to share between ubuntu and windows, and then will use my old ubuntu partition for installing windows xp.

I decided to use this computer with Ubuntu for the next few months but it is absolutely crucial to preserve the current WindowsXP state somehow. Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

Sep 30, 2010I have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with XP that has a WD 40GB model# WD-XL80SD-2 that has run out of space now matter how hard I try and keep it clean. I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

Mar 14, 2011I'm mostly a linux-idiot but I tried to get an update for a laptop that was running xubuntu. Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

May 4, 2011Ubuntu is getting stuck at the loading screen after an aborted attempt to upgrade to 11.04. It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).
I want to copy all the files off my /home and other meaningful partitions onto an external drive so I can just do a clean install. I can actually login to the command line under recovery mode, but I can't get the GUI started. I know it's possible to copy the contents of the partitions to an external

/dev/sdb is a usb flash drive that has pmagic (not sure of the version, but it's 2.6.32.9-pmagic kernel, so I think it's the latest version). I'm posting from pmagic right now because I don't want the failing disk to get any worse until I get this sorted. I also know there is a post here called something like 'learning the dd command' or 'mastering the dd command' or something to that effect, but I can't find it for the life of me (I have it bookmarked on the failing drive, of course). Oct 7, 2009however, I couldn't find a place in which it would really fit well. I have 2 hard drives, that I want to backup. I've heard of servers and things like that using a hard drive image. Is this similar to a disk image? What are the benefits of using hard drive imaging as opposed to using DVDs? And perhaps most importantly: how would I go about it using Fedora 10 (64 bit)?

The DVD's are in some sort of VOB, IFO format....or whatever they're called.There are many chapters on each of the DVD's and I want each of the individual chapters copied to the hard drive so I can rename the files something like, "fishing.mpeg" or "skiing.mpeg" and not some huge 3 gb file.
K9copy does a fair job but won't complete it. That is- k9copy gets 86% encoding done (I think that's the word for it) but won't finish copying the remainder of the chapters.

Dec 3, 2010Does anybody know how to or even if it's possible to create an ISO image (a snapshot, if you will) of an entire volume on a Linux box so that I can use that ISO to burn to a CD use in the future for creating an identical configuation on another box (which would have the same exact hardware)? It is to my understanding that I'd have to first create the ISO file of the entire system and then burn it to a CD and somehow mount it onto the hard drive of the identical-system-to-be.
I'm thinking that I'd have to use the "mkisofs" command but I'm not sure exactly how to do this. P.S. I do not want to use any 3rd party applications.

May 14, 2010I want to make an image of a 300GB hdd and I'm looking for a program that can do this.
There's one hdd with one single partition, 300GB size and I want to create an image of the hdd. To make things more clear, I want a mirror of a hdd.
Thing is, I have a server machine over the internet, which has a 300GB hdd single partition and I want to copy its contains, including OS.
I know Acronis, I worked with it before, but... idk if it has a gb limit when creating a image of a hdd. Acronis can backup/restore images of a hdd via internet, if you have an acronis server.
Let's put it this way, I don't have time (liek always... sorry 'bout that, but I'm not lazy, I just don't have time ) to search for a program and to make tests, and I would like a little help, maybe point to a program / solution that you guys have been tested.
- Remember it's a single 300GB hdd with a single partition. I want to copy the hdd over the internet, that's why I'm pointing to a program that can makes an image of that hdd over the internet.
Like... it's not that I want especially a program that can do this, maybe there's other solution aswell. Just feel free and share your solution/opinion whatever.
