Ubuntu :: Boot Windows 7 On A Different Drive?

Sep 2, 2010

I have a system with two drives, sda and sdb. Ubuntu 10.04 is installed on sda and Windows 7 is installed on sdb. I _can_ boot both Ubuntu and Windows if I change the boot order in the bios, however, when I try to boot the default Windows entry from the grub menu, the screen simply goes blank for a couple seconds and then I am once again presented with the grub menu. When I try to boot any of the "fixes" I found online I get, "error: invalid signature." Below is the default /boot/grub/grub.cfg along with 6 of the "fixes" I have found via google and ubuntuforums, and my dmesg.

Code:
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

General :: Boot - Ubuntu On One Drive And Have Windows 7 On The Other

Apr 29, 2010

There are many threads around about having both OS's but most seem to only refer to using one HDD. I might be wrong. I am currently building a new PC and I want to put Ubuntu on one drive and have Windows 7 on the other, and be given to option on which one to boot from (if possible). Can I follow the general directions around the internet that state it is usually better to install windows first, then do ubuntu, or would it not even matter.

I am trying to create a boot-able flash drive of Windows 7. I have the .iso and the flash drive.[URL].That article covers the creation process rather well, however i have one problem. I cannot seem to get ms-sys installed to create a boot record. I download the newest stable build from Sourceforge, navigate to the directory, and execute the make command. After that it says to issue the install command, and it quits with errors.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fixing Grub2 Boot Changes To Windows Drive?

May 3, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an external hard drive (USB connected) and I can no longer boot my Windows XP(SP3) from my internal C Drive. Grub gives me the list of boot choices, but when I choose the C drive, I just get these error messages:

(The version of Grub is 1.98-lubuntu5). I don't have a Windows System CD to boot from, but is there something I can do from within Ubuntu itself?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed 10.04 On A New Hard Drive - Windows Won't Boot

Jun 11, 2010

So I JUST installed 10.04 on a new hard drive for the third time. I had it completely wipe the hard drive and install ubuntu itself (so i couldn't mess anything up). Well NOW it won't even boot up ubuntu much less my windows hd.

So the setup is, my first harddrive which is 640gb and has my windows on it, and then my second harddrive which is 80gb and has my freshly installed ubuntu 10.04 on it. Neither will load. I don't even get a loading screen, I just get a flashing line after my mobo's splash screen.

I ran some boot loader info script and one of the first lines was

Code:

No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda

Installation :: GRUB On USB Drive - Boot Into Windows

May 6, 2010

I installed Ubuntu on a portable usb drive using a live CD. But now my computer NEEDS the USB plugged in in order to access the GRUB on it so I can boot into Windows from my hard drive. If I boot up my computer without the USB drive plugged in my computer gives me the prompt "Rescue grub" with the ability to type stuff in. I tried to use F12 on startup of my computer in order to tell it to boot using my hard drive (where my Windows 7 is installed) but still no luck.

If the USB drive is plugged in at start up, I get a neat little menu giving me a choice of booting into either Ubuntu, Windows 7, or the memory test. And all of that works fine. Basically, the problem is, I want to boot into Windows without needing that darn USB drive having to be plugged in when I start my computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Windows 7 From An External Drive After Installing Lucid

Aug 11, 2010

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.

I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.

So i can update grub using
Code:
update-grub

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)

My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.

So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.

General :: Windows 7 X64 Doesn't Boot If A Drive Is Plugged?

Jun 2, 2011

I have connected (sata cable I mean) the drive where I have got my Ubuntu installation to another pc with windows 7 64 bits (but I think that 32 and 64 doesn't make difference). Windows 7 doesn't boot. So I thought it may be some kind of issue with the hard drive itself (but the drive is healthy), anyway I have plugged one drive from one NAS (you know, NAS drives are linux partitioned and formatted).Same result: windows 7 doesn't boot.

Windows 7 boot sequence hangs and at the next boot prompts
"Repair windows installation"
"Boot windows normally"
(and obviously none of the options works)

Looks really like that Windows 7 doesn't boot if any linux partitioned and formatted drive is present.

Fedora Installation :: Windows 7 And F10 Dual-boot Single Drive?

Feb 1, 2009

After going back & forth between win7b & F10 installs, I can't get both to live on the same hard disk for dual booting anymore. win7 complains about fedora's GPT disk being unacceptable for installation. win7 blows away fedora's GPT partitions when it installs. Fedora doesn't recognize win7 partitions when it installs. I can't specify exact partition boundaries with windows even if I know what they are, and I can't seem to find any info how to do it in parted either. I have win7 installed in partition 3 in a known location on disk, but if I reinstall f10 (again), it's going to blow away the win7 boot data on the disk. How do I tell grub where to find the chainloader thingy? Can that still even be used? win7 no longer uses ntldr, and I haven't found an updated procedure for this new boot method.

I am replacing these machines with new updated ones and they have windows setup on a RAID0. I think it would be easiest to follow my previous setup and move the RAID to secondary SATA ports and put the linux drive on the primary SATA port, or should I just change the boot order in the BIOS to have the secondary linux drive boot first?

can I move a RAID setup to secondary controller ports without breaking the RAID?

What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

Ubuntu :: Put My Windows Files On E Drive Without Going Through The Hassle Of Reinstalling Windows?

Jan 23, 2010

I currently dual boot windows XP Pro with Ubuntu 9.10. I made a mistake last night playing with gparted and lost my E drive, which had all of my music, games and movies plus is where my Ubuntu install was. I then ended up reformatting the drive with windows and reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10.My question is how can I put my windows files on my E drive without going through the hassle of reinstalling windows.

I have a 20g IDE drive where my windows install is, windows and Ubuntu both tell me this drive is failing, (I have used it for booting since 2002, so I am not that concerned with it), another 40g IDE drive for more storage and a 160g SATA drive where Ubuntu is again installed. I want the SATA drive to be my main boot drive now, so how can I clone my windows boot to the other drive. I tried gparted but could not figure it out. I have gparted burnt to cd, booted with it and just don't understand how to use it.Also, if I clone this boot drive to the SATA drive, do I need to change jumper settings on my 40g to master when I take out the 20g drive.20g master and 40g slave on first IDE channel and 2 CD devices on second IDE channel and SATA drive on first SATA connection. I read somewhere that it is better to keep the cd devices on another channel than the disk drives.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 In A Second Partition Of The Hard Drive - Windows XP And Windows 7

Windows 7 did not see the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. So I understand that I need to format the partition where Ubuntu is running, install Windows 7 and later on Ubuntu 10.04 which will create the boot for the three systems. But I want to backup Ubuntu's installation, and after installing Windows 7, install the backup. So I will need to add the file for the dual booting. How can I do it? Is it there any piece of software that could create the three booting option that I need?

Ubuntu Installation :: Forced To Use Flash Drive As Boot Drive

Jun 11, 2011

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.

I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.

Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

Here's what I got:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS880 Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems Device 9602
00:06.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 2)
