View 2 RepliesWhich is why I'm glad KDE still values the good old desktop paradigm. I'd like to use unity, but unfortunately, it is impossible to customise in any significant fashion. I will be switching to Kubuntu now. I think a "start bar" is the perfect mouse & keyboard GUI paradigm.
My recomendation to the Ubuntu devs is to give unity an option to replace the awkward (for a mouse) application finder with a "start menu", and also give an option to have the old style of task bar as well.
I am not complaining here. like I said, I like KDE and have no problem switching over. The only reason I care about unity is; I don't want somebody to try Ubuntu, find out you can't customise the GUI at all, then go right back over to windows or OSX.
I recently upgraded to kubuntu 10.10 and now I can't play songs and sync my ipod outside of gnome. Before the upgrade I was able to access the ipod using rhythm box, it wouldn't be detected at first but if I would click music and then import folder and then click ipod touch under places rhythm box would recognise it and it would be mounted at /home/linux/.gvfs/iPod touch. But now unlike before on kubuntu 10.04, when I plug in my ipod it is actually recognised by the device notifier, but it only recognises it as a camera it has no access to the rest of the file system where the music is located, and their is no eject button in the device notifier to unmount. And because of this I can't mount gvfs unless I unplug the ipod, logout, and log back in into gnome. I tried mounting with ifuse before on 10.04 but it didn't work right, now when i try it in kde I get a whole new error message.

No device found, is it connected? If it is make sure that your user has permissions to access the raw usb device. If you're still having issues try unplugging the device and reconnecting it.

I didn't think that command would work but I tried it because I have no idea where the hell the ipod is mounted or if it's even mounted at all. Is their any way to keep kde from detecting my ipod touch? Or anything I can do in the terminal so I can use my ipod with gtkpod or rhythmbox while in kde.
I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

I would like to use as much FOSS as possible, particularly with touch screen computers. Is it possible to run Ubuntu with touch and/or multi touch capabilities? If so, will an HP Touch Smart computer run Ubuntu? I would very much like to purchase said machine via Linux Foundation discounts if this is the case.

I configured it with dc=localdomain,dc=local as its domain. As the server machine has no internet. Though when I go to add a .ldif file with the following command

My Kubuntu desktop uses 3x24" monitors running on two NVidia cards. I'm using Xinerama to make use of all 3 monitors in one giant desktop. Trouble is I really miss hardware acceleration which I had before with TwinView.
Is there *any* way to make Xinerama use the hardware like it's supposed to? The way it is, it makes the computer struggle; the i7 with 12 GBs of RAM runs like that 200Mhz MMX IBM Aptiva I had in 1995.

Using a ati sapphire radeon x1650 video card. If I d/l ati graphics driver to a usb drive, would I be able to install it in single user mode? if so, what would the path to usb drive be?

Basically, no or minimal mouse use is the desire. Since I decided not to stick with Unity, I know there've gotta be apps out there that provide this functionality; I'm just not sure how to find them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedCurrently have a Server 2003 fileserver. I am tired of having to buy a whole new hardware array every time I need more online space. I'm up to my 3rd controller/disk swapout in 5 years and I need something truly expandable. This time I am shooting for the stars and devising a system that will have an upper limit of 80TB instead of just doubling or tripling the current space (6TB). The server will initially be equipped with a 4-port eSATA contoller with a single 5-drive tower running through a port multiplier to one of the eSATA ports. As time goes on more towers will be added to fill all the eSATA ports (5 drives per port, 20 drives). If needed a second controller will be added to provide another 20 drives worth of capacity. (40 drives total). I need to work out what the best way to configure these drives is, to have some level of redundancy and also to keep the available data space reasonable. What I've worked out so far is:
LVM - expandable volume, all space should appear as a single volume. Start with an LVM volume over the 5 drive mdadm array. Expand it over new 5-disk towers as they are added.

MDADM - Each tower of 5 disks will be in a 5-disk RAID5 array set up with mdadm. As new towers are added the md* device will be used as new space to expand onto with LVM

Just upgraded to 11.4 this afternoon. All went smoothly for me. I did a clean install.I started up bubblemon, and it has huge bubble floating up in it. Is there anyone else with this problem?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have tightVNCserver running to provide me with a means of working on my machine whilst the wife watches mythTV on the (physical) display.
in 8.04 i used to have "gnome-panel &" as a line in my /home/mike/.vnc/xstartup file, and it worked fine, when i logged in via VNC i had a nice gnome panel to start apps from etc.
since 10.04 this stopped working and i had to change gnome-panel to gnome-session. this works... but now it loads everything up in the VNC window just like it does in my main window. this is a problem because it loads things like mythTV front end and so on... i don't want it to do that in my VNC window.
does anyone know how it might be possible for me to have two different 'types' of gnome session? Settings i change in System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications are common to both my VNC and my physical displays so i can't turn off mythTVfrontend in there to solve the problem.
i'm not sure why gnome-panel stopped working in my xstartup file, but it happened when i upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. if i try it in the ugly xterm window on VNC i get:

At some point, I suspect since the last kernel upgrade, I've begun experiencing a problem when the screen locks: I tap a key on the keyboard and the monitors wake up, but I get no "unlock" dialog. I can usually Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and gracefully reboot the system, but sometimes I have to hit hard reset. For now I've disabled the screensaver in "System -> Preferences -> screensaver" (I assume that'll stop the problem), but that's not an optimal solution.
Ok, I've tried Unity for awhile now and I can say it lacks a couple of critical things for me. First is launchers, second is a task bar. While casually browsing the web is ok, more serious work involving several windows has become a pain.
I have a dual screen with four virtual desktops. I'm tired of searching for my windows.
Now, I've read in a few places that I just need to choose "Ubuntu-classic" whenever I boot my machine. This is fine, but for the fact that I don't have any options on my login screen... Just the login and the accessibility & power buttons at the bottom right.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx from Karmic (fresh install though). All of the packages I used in Karmic seem to work nicely in Lucid, with one exception gnome-rdp. I'm a sysadmin in several windows environments so as you can imagine I love the session storage and grouping features. Unfortunately gnome-rdp is not displaying the group names. it stores my session and creates the group structure just fine, it just doesn't show me the group names in the app or the right-click menu on the top panel icon. My gut says it has something to do with the new Lucid theme, but I like the new theme. Does anyone know of a config file I can edit, or something I can do to disable theme integration, just for gnome-rdp?
View 3 Replies View Relatedhen it loads up ubuntu, it automatically detects the settings and resets, but my tv says it can't display the video. I have an old CRT monitor I hook it up to to be able to change settings, but it won't let me change the settings in gnome for the TV. I think the settings it will need to have for the video card hooked up RGB and television would be 1336x768, is there a way that I can program that to where it doesn't automatically detect the monitor?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest version of Thunderbird by downloading the tarball and copying the contents to the required folder and just point launchers to the Thunderbird file.
However I cannot get GNOME Do to run Thunderbird. When I type run in Gnome Do, I go through the entire list without having Thunderbird as an option. The only plugin I can find is one that allows you to copy Thunderbird contacts to the clipboard.
I have set Thunderbird to be my default mail client, so when I type an email address I can choose to compose a mail in GNOME Do, but just opening up Thunderbird to check mail is not possible.
I am having issues with displaying Asian characters when using the $ tree command. I am using ATI HD3200 graphics card, and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on a laptop. It have VGA port so I can attach external LCD monitor to the laptop. I am using fglrx driver.
My question is how should I configure the xorg.conf file so that when I attached external monitor, the GNOME menu bar (Applications, Places and System, etc) will be put on the external monitor instead of laptop LCD monitor.
I have checked varies web resource that saying you can drag and drop the GNOME menu bar to the new screen, it never worked. Someone also suggested to add new bar into the screen and GNOME will remember it, I can't even find the option to do that.
Is it possible to replace the date and time display on the gnome panel with the discordian date?
View 3 Replies View RelatedUsually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.
I am posting this under "Desktop Environments" because this does not occur under Unity, nor under KDE (tested with Kubuntu live-CD).

When I return to my plasma desktop from hibernating, the font display is broken - kind of stripes It affects all kde and gnome programs, and all window decorations, but f.e. chrome displays the webpages well.What could cause this, and how can I fix it? My system is a dell inspiron 1525 with intel 965gm graphics card running kubuntu 11.04 with no kde ppas enabled.
