OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel 2.6.31.12 Floating /var To Death

Mar 21, 2010

I tried to install the 2.6.31.12 kernel (as suggested for security reasons) twice, and each time, I got a *BIG* mess up of the installation. Here is the story (I'll try to keep it short): The installation of the kernel was not a problem, it went fine both time (I just had to reorganize Grub entries a bit). At first, all was running normal. Suddenly, after having left the computer idle for a moment, I was faced with a black screen (blanker probably) and I could not wake up the system: no mouse, no keyboard, all seemed to be frozen and I had to press the reset button.

After the reboot, and as soon as the desktop was loaded, I got an error message saying that /var has 0 bytes left ! The nightmare began... The first time that happened, I tried to find what was wrong in /var and /var/log , but found nothing abnormal. The info given by the Diskinfo tool were strange, sometimes showing /var as 100% full, sometimes it was /home that was 100% full and some other times it was /. I tried to fall back to kernel 2.6.31.8 using Yast, but it failed at the middle of the process. At this point I realized that the system was very unstable.

I then booted the Install HD and run the repair mode. Some errors were found and corrected, but in the end, the system was not repaired; and worst, Grub lost all entries except the floppy one. (Hopefully, I knew how to boot the Install HD from Grub's command line). I tweaked again and again, and finally got my system up again with kernel 2.6.31.8 (don't remind all the steps). Recently, as the kernel update was still suggested, as there were other updates in the meantime (like mkinitrd), and as haven read anyone else complaining about 2.6.31.12, I decided to give a try again.

And again, a couple of days later, same symptoms: black frozen screen, no space left in /var. As I knew the system was unstable, I immediately booted the Install HD. Tried the repair mode and it failed (just mess Grub again). Tried to (update) install kernel 2.6.31.8 from there and it also failed. I then started the rescue mode and tried to delete some big files in /var (again I did not found any monstrous thing in there), then tried again the repair and update process with no better results.

From rescue mode, I finally deleted everything in /var (that was not a good idea as I also deleted some NEEDED files)... Got the system to boot, but only to the text login: nscd failed because of missing files in /var, starx failed because no X server found, ... Fed up, I lastly decided to "update" all system base RPM, the Gnome and KDE desktop environment from the 11.2 install HD, then update everything again with Yast Online Update.

OpenSUSE :: Make KDE Panel With Different Sized Main Menu Than Bar Like Windows 7

Was wondering if there is a simple way to make the kickoff menu slightly larger than the panel similar to the way Windows 7 can have their (formerly-known-as) "Start" button larger?I have KDE on my laptop and am trying to make the best use of the small screen space. The Plasma Netbook Workspaces is alright, but I ended up returning to base KDE instead.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: WinFF Won't Start Up Floating Point Exeption?

Mar 17, 2011

Just updated WinFF to version 1.3.2-1.1. Since then it won't start up any more due to a floating point exeption. System: OpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 Debug info:

WARNING] Out of OEM specific VK codes, changing to unassigned
[WARNING] Out of unassigned VK codes, assigning $FF
ERROR in LCL: TLRSObjectReader.SkipValue unknown valuetype
Creating gdb catchable error:

I had the same error with earlier versions of WinFF in earlier versions of OpenSUSE. Then I could fix it by changing the KDE window styles. The error also occurs with the WinFF qt-version.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Use Of All 3 Monitors In One Giant Desktop?

Jan 24, 2011

My Kubuntu desktop uses 3x24" monitors running on two NVidia cards. I'm using Xinerama to make use of all 3 monitors in one giant desktop. Trouble is I really miss hardware acceleration which I had before with TwinView.

Is there *any* way to make Xinerama use the hardware like it's supposed to? The way it is, it makes the computer struggle; the i7 with 12 GBs of RAM runs like that 200Mhz MMX IBM Aptiva I had in 1995.

Software :: Planning Giant Array Expandable To 80TB

Dec 18, 2010

Currently have a Server 2003 fileserver. I am tired of having to buy a whole new hardware array every time I need more online space. I'm up to my 3rd controller/disk swapout in 5 years and I need something truly expandable. This time I am shooting for the stars and devising a system that will have an upper limit of 80TB instead of just doubling or tripling the current space (6TB). The server will initially be equipped with a 4-port eSATA contoller with a single 5-drive tower running through a port multiplier to one of the eSATA ports. As time goes on more towers will be added to fill all the eSATA ports (5 drives per port, 20 drives). If needed a second controller will be added to provide another 20 drives worth of capacity. (40 drives total). I need to work out what the best way to configure these drives is, to have some level of redundancy and also to keep the available data space reasonable. What I've worked out so far is:

LVM - expandable volume, all space should appear as a single volume. Start with an LVM volume over the 5 drive mdadm array. Expand it over new 5-disk towers as they are added.
|
v
MDADM - Each tower of 5 disks will be in a 5-disk RAID5 array set up with mdadm. As new towers are added the md* device will be used as new space to expand onto with LVM

Here's a quick diagram to show what i mean [URL]. So what I haven't been able to find out so far is:
> Is this really a good idea, what other way is there to get truly expandable storage?
> What happens to the linux kernel when it reaches /dev/sdz?
> Is mdadm capable of managing 40 disks, even if they are grouped as different arrays?
> Can LVM create a 57.92TiB volume?
> What FS would I need to use to support a 57.92TiB volume?
> If one md* fails entirely (2 dead drives from a group of 5), would anything on lvm0 be recoverable?

Fedora :: Generate Reasonably Sized EPS Images With Convert?

May 26, 2010

I am currently generating some EPS images for my thesis and run into a 'practical' problem regarding their size.My method to generate them goes through a program which gives JPG files, and then I use "convert" to pass from the JPGs to a EPS:Code:convert File.jpg File.epsThe problem is that resulting EPS files are obscenely large which makes their inclusion in my thesis impractical.I know GIMP offers the same functionality (JPG > EPS) but considering I am working with many files I want to automatize the process (hence why I used "convert").Is there any way I can make "convert" to output smaller EPS files? Alternatively, is there another utility to do what I am doing?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Over Sized Display Setting With NVidia

Jan 5, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu (Karmic with GNOME). I have a Samsung LED UEB7020, with an Asrock ION 330 BD player feeding to a Onkyo TXSR607, AV rec. The other day I downloaded NVidia v180.25, which was very useful, because it immediately solved an earlier teething problem of no sound. However immediately upon re-booting and ever since, the screen size is too big for the TV, meaning that I can not see the top, bottom, side and left of the display by about 2 inches either way. I have checked the NVidia resolution settings and they are correct for the TV, ie 1920 by 1080.

My etc/X11/ xorg.conf file reads as follows:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

Ubuntu Networking :: Traffic Shaping And QoS For Medium Sized Hostel?

Jan 6, 2010

I maintain a network in a hostel for university students. As we often have a relatively slow connection I tried to find a solution. A friend of mine used traffic shaping / QoS here before I got the job. But we seem to have not made the best rules for the shaping as the connection was way faster without the shaper than with. As he himself installed the system alone I have nearly no knowledge how to put up another, better system.

About the hostel:

- 90 people in this house
- 10 mbit SDSL dedicated line, full flatrate
- very mixed type of internet traffic (P2P, HTTP, EMails, Rapidshare, Torrents, Skype, ...)

I would like to install a linux router with traffic shaping, QoS and maybe even SQUID. Googling for the words brought so much older stuff, but nothing newer.

Hardware :: Wine - Can't Print Properly To Legal Sized Paper

Jul 6, 2011

I'm trying to set up a customer who has two printers attached to their computer one is some sort of okidata color laser printer, which seems to work fine the other one is a brother HL-4040CDN, which prints fine from a Linux based application such as open office.

When i try to print from a program in wine, however, I can't for the life of me get it to print properly to legal sized paper, it doesn't complain about paper size or anything, it simply crops the print size to that of letter sized paper even though I tell it the paper size is Legal.

I have tried setting the default paper size on the printer's firmware settings, I have tried setting the paper size in cups both through the printer preferences applet and the web interface, i have tried telling the program to print to legal paper and the only thing i can affect is which end of the paper it prints to, i have even tried different drivers for CUPS, i'm not sure if the problem is wine, the program, the printer, or how wine talks to the specific printer via cups (the other printer prints fine) i am using ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.
