I am having issues with displaying Asian characters when using the $ tree command. I have tried changing it via Terminal -> Set character Encoding -> Unicode (UTF-8.) in terminal options.I have also tried changing it to various other Asian encodings as well.Asian characters do display correctly in Pcman, Firefox, Leafpad and Terminal if I open Terminal from Pcman. I have a bunch of files that I need to rename, ordinarily this is pretty easy task. The problem here is that the file names have Chinese / Japanese characters. ie [$$$$$$$$].SOMETHING BLAH BLAH.ext Where all the "$$$$" are insert Chinese characters. The problem is that sed or perl doesn't seem to handle the Chinese characters correctly so using a regular expression like this 's/^[*.]//' which would normally work doesn't. From what I have read so far I believe these characters are double encoded UTF-8 (not 100% sure) which could be the problem. So far I've tried numerous different regex's as well as playing around with convmv to see if I could convert the filenames to just single encoded characters but I've had no luck.

So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.
I have no problems displaying Chinese characters in IE in Windows and I just switched over to Ubuntu.
I have gone to view-> Character Encoding and set it to simpified Chinese but the screenshot still looks like the attachment.

Is there a way to get Document Viewer to display Chinese characters in a pdf? Adobe Viewer does but I would prefer to avoid proprietary software. I cannot get either Document Viewer or Okular to properly show Chinese characters in pdf documents downloaded from my college class homepage.
I have all the Chinese language support files, bells and whistles (both traditional and simplified) loaded and operational. When I create a Chinese document in OO Writer and save it as a pdf, both DocViewer and Okular display the the Chinese characters properly. I just cannot get either DocViewer or Okular to display Chinese in pdfs that are downloaded from the website of my course's online textbook/workbook.

I update system today. Just before , everything is normal. Once it finished , I found that my KDE can't display some characters. I am a Chinese user. The English words are normal,. Just some Chinese characters can't be displayed. When I refreshed the browser, they can be displayed again but some of them are font default and some of them are font Yahei. And they are displayed messed together. It is not pretty. AND it is not only in browser, anywhere displayed Chinese characters looks the same as browser. How to change them back to default font as one font not two types of font messed together?

All Chinese and Japanese characters are displayed as blocks of hexadecimals, except Japanese kana. How can I make them displayed correctly?

I have been dredging the internet trying to find the answer to this and frankly, my brain hurts. On some e-mails that show up fine in Windows are showing up with hexadecimal characters in Evolution. I assume that it is because of the encoding because I have downloaded every font in the book, it seems, including the microsoft tty fonts. I only can find how to change the encoding on Evolution and aside from foreign (I'm in US) encodings I just have the unicode 7 & 8 which don't help. I'm thinking there is some sort of proprietary Microsoft encoding that I need.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently intalled Debian lenny and I'm having issues with some of the unicode characters. Instead of displaying the symbols properly it shows one of the following depending on font/app:
1) Square outline with four letters/numbers arranged inside
2) Just a blank square outline
3) Just a blank space
I haven't been able to test all possible characters, but from a quick check it seems that Cyrillic works properly, Japanese doesn't.A few Google searches later and I'm no wiser on how to fix the issue. Any help?
Using Fluxbox, have tried this in XFCE and KDE. Chinese characters display properly in whatever browser I use online. I do need to see some in the file manager and this is not working.

I'm trying to get more acquainted with the terminal but have run into a problem. I have a flash drive that originally had a name that consisted of numbers and letters. After using the flash drive on Windows recently, I saw that its name had changed and now contains special characters (the name is now �NPM=:�N). It poses no problem when navigating through folders graphically, but because I usually have multiple external drives and the first character of the flash drive name is a special character, I have no idea how to 'cd' to the flash drive from the terminal. So the only solution I see is to either type these special characters in the terminal or somehow cycle through all the folders in /media with the keyboard.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).
My terminal shows unicode squares (the little square with it's 2 byte unicode value inside it), whenever I press a control character while running a program (ex. cat or ping).See this example. Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I am trying to make specifically Norwegian characters appear properly. Right now they look like this:

Characters like turns the same. This is a font that I downloaded called PT Sans. The letters I want are included, they just don't appear right in the GNOME environment, it seems. They work just fine in other applications, such as OOo Writer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.
I successfully installed both Age of Empires 3 and the Asian Dynasties expansion following the instructions in the Wine AppDB. In addition, I've also patched AoE to version 1.14 and Asian Dynasties to 1.03. However, whenever I attempt to play either game, I get this:

gnome-terminal from the Debian squeeze does not use the 'default_size_columns' and 'default_size_rows' from the /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/ folder of gconf.

I am using ubuntu10.04-server 64bit AMD with fluxbox. After I ran Matlab in a shell (without GUI) the shell does not display characters anymore, but will execute any command, I just can't see the characters that I'm typing.. I use aterm and xterm, does anybody know why that is, am I missing a package?

We would like to type simplified Chinese characters on FC11. gcim is installed, and it is selected as input method. We see that with ctrl-space input method changes, and we can select types with ctrl-shift. However, we cannot find a "normal" simplified Chinese,. If we type "WO" it pops up with 7 possibilities, witch is not enough as it suppose to drop over 50 .
