Usually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.
I am using the X server of Fedora 7 for displaying my application.I am getting the display as I need but I dont want the title bar of gnome terminal titlebar to be displayed.I also dont want the maximize,minimize buttons to be displayed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "�33]0;$*�07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd.What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am connecting to remote Linux PCs via ssh, to update software and do other tasks. I want to send a notification to the remote PCs screen (eg, "Do not run program X, it is being updated now"), so the users do know what is happening.
Is there a reverse way for ssh -X host so I can connect to a remote Linux machine and run notify-send and it appears on the other display?
I installed the latest version of Thunderbird by downloading the tarball and copying the contents to the required folder and just point launchers to the Thunderbird file.
However I cannot get GNOME Do to run Thunderbird. When I type run in Gnome Do, I go through the entire list without having Thunderbird as an option. The only plugin I can find is one that allows you to copy Thunderbird contacts to the clipboard.
I have set Thunderbird to be my default mail client, so when I type an email address I can choose to compose a mail in GNOME Do, but just opening up Thunderbird to check mail is not possible.
I have a C program that can run disconnected ( like most ), is there a programmatical way to tel if the program is running without a terminal? Example:nohup my-program &What I want is to modify the program so it can be used as a HUB interface. It does Peer to Peer communication and I want to make it a server function with a command line option.Currently if I disconnect the program, it will loop on the read for stdin, I need to be able to detect that and go into 'HUB' mode.

I know how to keep it from tying up the terminal, but when it devotes the terminal, I like that it gives output if the program crashes. Is there a way I can set a terminal to completely hide itself (off the desktop and the taskbar) while it's running a program, then reappear once the program is closed?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am using DreamLinux. I have pinned a program, that runs in terminal, to the launcher in the panel on desktop. The program's executable file (name: feap) is located in /home/User/feap2.2 After I added the launcher to the panel that runs the file in terminal, the program asks for the input file (text file with alot of commands) when run. By default the program accepts the files that are located in the same directory i.e. /feap2.2 , so I placed the input file in the same directory.
However when I run the program from the panel, and give the input file name, it says no such file exists. Then I gave the file name with full path, but problem was not solved. I have tried alot e.g. placed the input file at other locations, but all in vain. I have set all input file permissions to be accessible by User as well. I will be much relieved if someone suggests where to place the input file for the such program running in the terminal launched from panels?
P.S: If I open terminal, go to the directory (/home/User/feap2.2), run the program's exe file, and then give the file name, it accepts the input file and it give results.
I'm running ubuntu 10.10 (with the macbunu theme if it matters). From there, I'm running an application on a solaris system and forwarding the X11 display back to my ubuntu/gnome display with the follow command "ssh -X <solaris-host>". Everything seems to display correctly so far except for what I would describe as the alert boxes. The problem is they are invisible. I know it's there because I have mouse pointer jumping turned on and the mouse jumps to the default button and if I click on it the alert box flashes and but disappears. The disappearing is normal due to the button press. So it appears the alert box is present but invisible until I click a button but disappears immediately because of the button press.

I'm not quite sure what's up with this, but when I change the title of a terminal away from the default (e.g. to represent which project that terminal is to be used for), it changes back to the default (user@host:path), but only on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, listing the open windows.
If I change tabs in the terminal and then change back, it displays again at the bottom of the screen, but as soon as I execute another command (e.g. ls), then it resets again. That's quite annoying, as I like to have a few terminals open, each with a set of tabs pertaining to a particular project. The fact that I can't see from the title on the taskbar which is which means I have to guess/remember/check them all...
In the past, when I open a gvim session on a remote machine, the title bar of gvim would show the machine name in brackets. I am not sure if this was done by the remote gvim itself, or the local window manager. In the past I have used gnome2, although I am currently using unity (and finding it rather frustrating). Is there some setting I can change to always force remote windows to display the source machine?

View 7 Replies View RelatedIN 3.5.10 I am able to display the full $PROMPT_COMMAND environment variable in the Konsole title bar. Kind of handy and I did not need to display that information in the $PROMPT variable.
In 4.5.5 I am having trouble figuring out how to make that work correctly. The title bar displays only the directory name rather than the full path and user name.
This is my $PROMPT_COMMAND:
history -a;echo -ne "33]0;${USER}@`uname -n`: ${PWD}07"
All I see in the title bar is:
dirname: bash
I should see:
username@hostname: full path to present working directory
What I am trying to do is remove the title bar completely in gnome, it would be nice to be able to choose which applications had the bar and which did not, but I would be perfectly satisfied with just removing them from every window. I assume this is controlled by the window manager which would make it a metacity setting? Anyway, I have an 11in screen on my netbook and I cannot stand having such a big chunk of real estate wasted by such a useless feature, especially when I can perform all the window functions with keyboard shortcuts.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIt's hard to tell for sure if this is related to a recent update or not. There've been a bunch for sure In any of the GUI the title bars, there used to be 3 boxes on the right end. Minimize, Maximize and close. They're gone. Totally vanished for all users.
L click on the icon near the left end of the title bar or a R click anywhere on the title bar brings up a menu with such options (and others), but I sure do miss my 'close' button!

but i am still unclear on how i am able to make the program check if either on of the input(either $Title or $Author) is not filled up, and if one of it is not filled up, use the other one which is filled to do a search.
I don`t know what kind of combination of keys I pressed, but the title bar of all windows in my Gnome vanished. Trying to fix it, I unmarked the option "show menu bar" in one of my windows. Then, I realised I couldn`t put it back either. It`s kind of frustating be stuck in such a small problem, but Gnome isn`t offering me any easy way to put these things back in place. maybe with a keyboard combination of keys that recovers all of this?
I did it, it recovered Gnome windows default, but the menus are still gone. It just erased my customizations (colors, window color, bar size, etc.)
So I've been testing Gnome Do and I now want to activate docky. To do that I have to activate the desktop effects, so I installed drivers for my graphics card which work fine. But I have an infamous issue with my compiz which causes all title bars of windows to disappear. Is there a solution in which I can activate docky and still have my title bars?
