Jun 30, 2010I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

Jul 28, 2011I was fooling with my ifconfig settings in order to change mode to promiscuous.I ran the following command: sudo ifconfig wlan1 prmisc.This worked, but now I cannot connect to the internet. How can restore my previous wlan settings, namely, go back to managed mode?
I ran this:
iwconfig wlan1 mode managed
and received this:

1) how to make kde not to start/memorize previous session after reboot?
2) in gnome-power-manager i can read Battery Health (mAh, Design Capacity...)-something like that in KDE? In KDE Power manager i have no such readings.
3) is there some cleaning tool as for gnome ubuntu-tweak?

Jan 10, 2011Don't know what I did but while moving the cursor around fast, suddenly my desktop reverted to the default openSUSE 11.3 background (circles) from a custom jpeg image and all the icons disappeared. Rebooting did not solve the situation. Never had this happen before in over twenty years.Is there a way to restore the previous desktop or do I need to reconfigure everything?

Aug 25, 2010This is to request assistance or information as to why the evolution application will not accept the evolution-backup-tar.gz file from a previous version.
Situation: I upgraded by way of a fresh install from openSuSE 11.2 to 11.3 (GNOME desktop).
Before upgrading, I produced the above mentioned backup file so that I could import all the mail, addresses etc. into the new application.
Result: it does not work. The process starts up seemingly normal but then simply sits there forever with the message "evolution shuts down" - but it does'nt. I have to kill it to stop it.
I am looking forward to a resolution since it would be a real pity if I lost the mail history.

If messed up my PC's couple of times so now before I do anything I would like to roll back changes and resort to last working kernel ( and related s/w) in case that fails . HOW do I do it? ( c.f Windows Last good session ) ALTERNATIVELY folks - is there a way you can backup and restore to full accuracy all your previous kernels .- I mean just inset the CD .It will identify the partitions , then it will ask you "where you want to restore them" and then it just restores the prev. image.

May 2, 2011Using more than one instance of the same app is a real pita in Unity.If I have 3 (or more) pdf documents open in evince then there isn't a way to shift from one to the other using the mouse. Previously I had the windows on the taskbar and could click on the one I wanted. In Unity clicking on the evince icon on the launcher just brings ALL the instances of evince to the top - I still then have to shuffle the windows around to get the one I want.I've been trying to get used to Unity over the last few days, so maybe I am just doing it wrong, but if not then maybe I should file a bug report?

Dec 3, 2010recently Firefox/Minefield started to stop loading sites after some time and when exiting Firefox, the process would keep running in the background, so I have to kill it. When I did this yesterday, Firefox no longer restored my tabs from last session like usual. There's a sessionstore.bak in my profile folder whose size is 1.3 MB and seems to be intact.
Still, when renaming it to sessionstore.js, Firefox will still not load my tabs - it just displays the start page. This applies to both Firefox 3.6 and Minefield. I tried a sessionstore backup from five days ago, but the result is the same. Is there anything else I need to do to get Firefox to restore my tabs? Session restore in general does not seem to be broken, because when I open a few new tabs and save them, they are restored the next time I start Firefox.

Jul 9, 2011I tried to enable desktop-cube on unity, and when it did that it disable the unity compiz plugin.When it did that it removed the entire top bar that we has the buttons to min,max, and exit. As well as all windows default to the very top-left side of screen and under the the top bar so I Can not move the window ether.I turned it back to the unity plugin, but it did not work. Even tried to complete remove and install compiz and unity. This does not affect Unity 2D.

Mar 5, 2010Desktop computer (AMD64) running F12. Nothing unusual about it, stock install. Thinkpad laptop running Windows XP. Putty is installed, I can SSH to Fedora.
If I'm at the laptop, in a Putty session, how can I (for example) type "firefox" and have the resultant Firefox window appear on-the-laptop?
I generally have X running all the time on the desktop because I can't get the wireless network connection to function without NetworkManger (not that I really care because I'm rarely at a console screen and need net access).

Oct 24, 2010This is regarding the 'screen' utility. I use an utility called 'HummingBird Exceed' to get the XSession of a linux client on my windows desktop (basically it uses XDMCP). But the pain is that at the end of the day, when I close Exceed, the session gets destroyed. I did lot of searching on the web to know how the save and restore session in Exceed, but failed. However, I found that 'screen' is the utility which keeps the session intact even when you logout. So, I did the following:
a. Logged into the machine using Putty (terminal emulator).
b. Started 'screen'.
c. Issued the command: /usr/bin/gnome-session
I got the XSession on the Exceed and started working. I opened three or four gnome-terminals. But when I logout of exceed(and detach from the screen), the screen displayed a message saying that 'Connection to XServer was lost". Hence I could not restore to this session when I reattached to the screen. how do I use 'screen' so that when I attach to the screen on which I had started gnome-session, it attempts to connect to the Xserver and open the session as it was before detaching?

May 3, 2011When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).
